Turns in $250,000 to Believe the State Treasury. SPRINGFIELD, Oct. The state treasurer received to-day $250,000 from the Illinois Central railroad which made an advanced payment upon the amount which will be duo December 1, in order to give the crippled financial condition of the treasury some assistance. John Dunn was seen at the Central offices and said to a Chicago Journal reporter: "Yes, we have paid the state government the mentioned in the dispatch. I believe the governor requested our road to do this in order to assist the state in an emergency.

I am not positive on this point, however. I do not' recall any instance when this was done before. The payment was made simply as an accommodation to the state, not being due until December, and not as an obligation. We had the ready money and had no pressing need for it." WILL BE A CANDIDATE. Some clays ago Samuel Francis received notice from tho noted Al Summers that a note on.which Francis' name appeared as security, was now due and for him to call and pay samo. Francis says this was the first intimation ho had that there was a note outstanding on hia name appeared, so he went to I see Summers and learned that the noto bore, the names of Bill Memlenal and Sam Francis, as makers of same, John Faith as payee and Joo Cadwallader as witness and that John Faith hail sold the note to Summers, and it is presumed tbat Faith is tho man that forged the names. Francis declared the note a forgery, Summers has sued on same and the trial is set for to-day.

Faith quietly departed from these parts some time ago and his whereabouts are not known. However, Summers is reported as saying that he would spend $100 in hunting him up. Grattan Donnelly, who has shown wonderful ingenuity in portraying scenes characteristic of the Kussiau. The theme is a most interesting one, and the story is told with such vividness that absorbed attention in held from the opening to the closing scene.

The dialogue is bright, crisp and cheerful, and a vein of genuine, mirth-provoking comedy runs through the play. The production in every way is moat elaborate.and abounds in effective tableaux and groupings costumes are marvels of beauty, tho artistic intermingling of color in the dress of the characters presenting not only a pleasing, but striking effect. C. Lumber and Coal Rates. Lumber and coal rates were raised yesterday by order of the Western Freight agents, who have been in session for two days. The new rate on lumber will go into effect on Nov. 4.

Lumber is restored to a 15-cent basis' Coal rates, which were at $3.20 before the cut, will be after Nov. 11, 82 per ton to the Missouri river, and $2.50 per ton to Sioux City. Contracts which do not expire uutil Jan. 1, rendered necessary this half-way action. The Brenneman Sale.

The Brenneman sale yesterday at their farm near Emery was largely attended and the stock sold at fairly good prices. Twenty head of horses were disposed they brought good figures. A number of cows were also offered for 'sale. Between three and four hundred peopla attended the sale, and at noon they were served with a good lunch. Tobe Ward was the auctioneer.

They lope all the Endeavorers and anyone who will enjoy this famous company of jubilee singers, will purchase tickets and ielp them to succeed in their effort. All who have heard the Tenneseecuns say this chorus is composed of. the most gifted singers of the negro race, und they are sure to please.

Tickets cents. The Missionary Extension course is intended simply to arouse and develop an intelligent and practical rnimionary en- thuiiasm. It is not un experiment, but has stood the test of nearly two years of continuous operation, during which time Htores of tcwns und cities in Illinois, Iowa, I diana, Kansas, Wisconsin und other western states have taken the course a.nd afterward enthusiastically testified to its interest and profit. It was also endorsed at Cleveland by a representative gathering of some thirty official members of the missionary (Homo and Foreign i boards and societies of fifteen or more leading and was most heartily endorsed at tho Boston convention. This course coueits of eix different speakers, who come al intervals of one month, each of whom shall be an expert in the treatment of the topic assigned lo him, and capable of interesting and profiting the largest and most intelligent audience that can Do gathered to hear him.

--The Presbyterian Society will give an "Evening in Europe" Monday evening, October 21. Mrs. R. L. Walston, Miss Grace Hutchison, Miss Mary Neil and Ira Clokey, who have spent the past summer abroad, will tell eome of the interesting things of their trip.

Special music has been arranged for, and you may be sure of a pleaaant and profitable evening. Everyone is invited, and especially those interested in the foreign countries or an ocaan voyage. Macon county president, C. T. Me- Intire, and DeWitt county president, D.
