Last October, the count showed the manuscripts to the American pianist, Byron Janis. They had turned up in a box marked "old clothes." WHEN JAMS saw the two manuscripts, he immediately recognized their importance.

He asked the count to search for corroborative material. The count discovered a folder in which the two manuscripts had been placed. On the cover of the folder was written: "Autographe. 2 valses. Composers et donnees par F.

Chopin 1833." Janis, studying the manuscript of the flat waltz, noticed many variants from the published version. These could have been anticipated. plcturt IF Janis Knows Chopin Best Special To Tht Timet tc) Tht New York Times Byron Janis, whose study of Chopin's piano music enabled him to recognize two lost manuscript copies of waltzes by the Polish composer, is a Slav by descent as well as in his musical leanings. Throughout his career the 39-year-old pianist has specialized in the music of Chopin and other Slavic composers, including Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev. He made his first big splash in a Rachmaninoff concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony on Feb. 20, 1944, and the Russian-born Vladimir Horowitz, who attended the performance, took Janis under his tutelege and worked with him for three years. Janis has made several appearances on the Suncoast, the latest being last March, when he appeared at Bayfront Center in the Florida Presbyterian College Artist Series.

Cui IV, CA. By MARY NIC SHENK Times Music Writer "Alceste," ChrLstoph Willi-bald Gluck's dramatic opera based on the Greek tragedy of Euripides, was introduced in Vienna on Dec. 26, 1767. 200 years later plus 10 days the first act of "Alceste" will be presented in St. Petersburg by the Florida Suncoast Opera Association.

THANOS Mellos, artistic director, says the Jan. 5, 1968 presentation will be the first one locally of "Alceste" and the first time the original version of the score has been used. Mellos obtained a photostat of the old orchestra score of "Alceste" at the New York Public Library and had it reduced to a piano score. Xeroxed copies of the score provided the music for chorus members after being transcribed by local chorus master accompanist George Bew. Bew also prepared an English adaptation of the text, using the original Greek drama by Euripides as reference, said Mellos.

Orchestral parts were located in Covent Garden, London, and were received in St. Petersburg Dec. 4. Reportedly this is the only set of orchestra parts in existence. APPEARING in the concert version of "Alceste" in costume Friday, Jan, 5 at 8 p.m.

at Pasadena Community Church, 112 70th St. will be Christine Buhrman, Marlene Walker, William Walker, Thomas Teague, William Waters and Harry Waller. The program also will include excerpts from the "Barber of Seville," "Der Frei-schutz," Cosi fan Tutte" and "Aida." Season tickets for this and the March 26 production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" are $6 to $15, dress circle $25. For tickets call 898-1537 or write P.O. Box 670, St.

The two fathers open with "A Marsh-mallow World," then bring on daughters Gail and Nancy, who do a medley followed by a quartet with dear old dads. Then the fathers introduce sons Dino and Frank with the cameras cuting back and forth between the generations, as they talk and sing.

Still more daughters, Deana and Tina are introduced, for more songs. Dean and Frank read letters to Santa Claus, Dean introduces his wife, and the finale has all the Martins and the Sinatras singing carols around the Christmas tree. Oh yes, in a non-Christmas segment, the two casual men sing a very good "swinging medley." And another oh yes, Mia was in the show, taped in September, but was obviously cut out. 10-11 p.m., Ch. 8.

Stop the Cossacks' leader, Olga (Anne Baxter) and her cowardly associate, Egghead (Vincent Price), always bringing up the rear on his burro. p.m., Ch. 13 J. D. Cannon turns in a coldbloodedly brutal performance in CIMARRON STRIP. He comes to town with papers proving him a deputy, and he immediately "saves" the saloon from destruction by killing the would-be destroyers.

But we know he is really an outlaw, left for dead eight years earlier during a major robbery. Now he is back seeking to kill every member of the gang, all of whom have turned fairly respectable. The fact that he has been hired as a deputy by Stuart Whitman, about to leave town, makes his job easier. Marj Dusay, who plays the woman who loved him, is making her dra-mactic debut. Her face should be familiar to commercial watchers.

p.m., Ch. 10 THE FLYING NUN has some genuine laughs as it examines the reaction of tourists to snow in San Juan. The snow is a Christmas gift of Sally Field's to an elderly Norwegian nun longing for a white Christmas. But heavy winds carry Sally over San Juan, and her cloud seeding works too well. Panic starts as tourists rush to leave the area, but a second storm green works miracles.
