Stevens High School football team completed its first undefeated season in the school's history by running all over Middletown North to win the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV Championship, 35-0. yesterday. The win was forged behind hard running by the Stevens backs, an offensive line that controlled the line of scrimmage, and a defense that completely smothered every offensive threat by the Lions, to leave the Hawks with a 10-0-1 record for the season. "I hate to see the season end," said Stevens coach Joe Gutowski as he was mobbed by fans and players after the game. "These are just the greatest bunch of guvs I've ever coached." said Gutowski emotionally.

The Hawks were led by a three-touchdown performance from junior running back Nick Sottiriou, who scored twice in the second quarter to help the Hawks establish a 21-0 lead at the intermission. Sottiriou's longest run was a 60-yard bolt off right tackle with 6:09 left in the half. After Dunellen punted the ball out-of-bounds at the Owl 30, quarterback Bob Nawy threw a screen to wide receiver Reggie Eato who ran to the 46. Two plays later, Nawy found running back Steve Riese in the Destroyer backfield. Riese caught the pass at the Dunellen 45 and outran two defenders to complete a 54-yard scoring play. Riese showed his defensive talents Pioneers reach their goal 1.874 yards and 142points. The fleet senior was "held" to 144 yards and one touchdown.

Thornburg did manage to achieve two personal milestones. With a 61-yard run in the fourth quarter, he went over the 2,000 yard plateau for the season. On the next play, Thornburg became Middlesex County's all-time leading scorer with an eight-yard scoring run that raised his total to 148 points. He had previously been tied with Phil Chiera of Carteret who set the record in 1968. By JOHN PUCCIO Home News correspondent DUNELLEN With its 35-12 victory over Dunellen yesterday, Highland Park turned what was supposed to be a close, hard-fought game into a rout and won the NJSIAA Group I championship.

The Owls played excellent football on both offense and defense. The Pioneers reached their goal convincingly. After winning Central Jersey Group II last year. Somerville took care of the other half of the problem when it rapped Hightstown, 28-6, at Brooks Field for the Group III championship.

"We had a chance to put our names in the record book and we did." remarked an ecstatic Somerville head coach. Jerry Moore, after the victory. "I thought we played a super football game." The Pioneers were especially "super" in the first haif. The Rams were assessed 15 yards for delay of the game at the start when they arrived 15 minutes late for the opening kickoff and then the Pioneers added insult to injury by rolling to a 20-0 advantage by intermission. When it was all over, the Rams had dominated the Buccaneers en route to a 28-0 victory. With it went the Central Jersey Group II championship and made coach Bill Csatari "the happiest man in the world and South River the happiest town in the world."
