lEsns. 13 NEW BRUNSWICK. N.J FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 197J Judy just a Amnsements-Theater i I i joy to hear that the listener transcends the blackness of the night and fancies himself awakening to such a glorious day. From there Miss Collins glides through a variety of other images until, suddenly without warning, she shoots an icy stare over the heads of her audience as she sings a song of prison-riot death and violence. In the very next number, however, those same bright blue eyes twinkle like a pair of stars in the sky as spotlights isolate the songstress for the ethereal melody, "Clouds." Miss Collins emerged from the arts center curtains last night in a flowing, floor-length gown of chiffon and lace, enhanced by the barest suggestion of transparency under the softer spotlights.

In the neck of her guitar was a single red rose, but by the end of the concert Miss Collins walked off stage with a bouquet of white daisies and several other tokens of affection, including a gold necklace. As she sang her encore, "Suzanne," thousands of listeners in the arts center sat in mesmerized silence for the haunting rendition of this Leonard Cohen classic. Only once did the flow of the performance falter, when the Seattle-born balladeer tuned her guitar for a particular number only to have her backup begin something else. Wincing with the first wrong chord, Miss Collins turned to piano player Richard Bell with a grimace. Quickly returning her instrument and muttering something about the humidity of the night, she continued unflustered.

Even a broken guitar string couldn't unnerve the singer, as she simply borrowed her lead guitarist's acoustic backup, noting that it has a better quality than hers anyway. Trie Conmuom ShontiT By RUDY LARINI Home News staff writer HOLMDEL Through the balmy, summer night air, a soft voice wafts gently from under the cavernous amphitheater out over a grassy knoll. The voice spins a fantasy, creating the whimsical "ice cream castles in the air and feathered canyons everywhere" that the lyrics of the provocative "Both Sides Now" conjure up. The night belongs to nature, the open-air theater is the Garden State Arts Center but the voice is that of the inimitable Judy Collins. A number of things could be said about last night's single performance by this superbly talented woman: A finer evening could not have been ordered.

Miss Collins held the audience captive as she displayed her mastery of the Anglo-American folk ballad. Her six-man backup group was musically excellent. But no more accurate critique of the concert could be had than one admirer's tribute just before Miss Collins' encore. "You're beautiful, Judy! We love you," the admirer called out. As a matter of fact, about the only undesirable aspect of a Collins concert is that several of her moving ballads provoke an almost uncontrollable urge to respond in an unbridled outburst of song, an urge not easily satisfied in the forum of the arts center.

For example, her opening number, "Chelsea Morning," creates such a vivid image of the "song outside my window" OM From 12 Noon I I 1 1 2 WiAei from 2 PM, Mill 4I" CONOITUWD ONL MONICA MONROE IN SHOWS 7:15 9:30 warren bi-ally julie christie gnldie hawn "TRAVELIN" plus 2nd Bit Hit Georjim Spervin 'TEACHERS CREAM" 1 5 Late Show Friday Saturday JUDY COLLINS playing to a captive audience THE BOB SHOO BOP REVIEW Telethon bombs in ratings its "TWO" ARMENIAN SHISHKABOB only 0' ENTERTAINMENT BY "TED ARLENE" AND SAT.
