Brides Of Five Years Tell Newlyweds All About Buying Special To Times From The N.Y. Herald Tribune NEW YORK The advice to newlyweds from brides of five years standing is "Buy when you are first married because before you know it along come children, a larger apartment, a house, nursery school fees, ballet lessons and then college." Not that you will buy everything in the way of household needs right away, but within the first year you should acquire basics. For most couples, basics include a bed, a chest of drawers for the bedroom, a rug, an eight-foot Lawson-type sofa, a man's upholstered chair, a dining table and a cabinet that will be used in the living room to start with and can, at a future date, be a buffet or china cabinet for the dining room. These are the items in which to invest the most money. If you have to choose, it is considered wiser to buy a few good things than to spread your money thin and have nothing of any lasting value.

BASICS SHOULD not be bought solely for the first apartment but for the larger, more permanent apartment or house you inevitably will move into. If you have no particular feeling for furniture, don't worry too much about it. Maybe you are not the type, or are not sure what you like. Some couples would rather invest in a sculpture, or a painting and live with improvised furniture. Some would rather invest in silver, china and lovely accessories to make "nothing" furniture look grand.

Basics will take a good hunk of the budget. Once you have them you will need a long list of items that should be acquired in three years, if not sooner. Obvious on the "needed" list are dining chairs (a set of eight good chairs is a joy to own and use all through the house. If you can plant this idea with a rich uncle, all the better. It will solve a problem for anywhere from 10 to 30 years).

Additional needs are' draperies, curtains, small tables, more chests of drawers, or storage units, rugs, lamps, accessories, silver, china, crytal, linens and, of course, pots and pans.
