Gandhi's Inst hours Is the time period rovered by an excellent movie, "Nine Honrs To Rama," which opened yesterday at riayhouse Theatre.

(llama In India means God and the Mark Robson film production boRins nine hours before Gandhi's death.) Though the Mahatma's death Is fetal point of the movie, the story is principally about the assassin and his motivations. The plot picks up on the morning of the assassination. Throuch numerous flashbacks, the audience sees what influences have shaped the fanaticism of young Natu Godse, the designated murderer. INTERWOVEN, into the skein of events are the police superintendent's frenzied efforts to track down the conspirators and Gandhi's refusal to alter his plans or accept armed protection. To a viewer, knowing that the assassination attempt will be successful, the movie becomes chill-infily fascinating.

The cops and robbers aspects become unimportant and the conflict of ideologies takes center stage. A soap opera involvement sworn by a secret society never to marry between young Godse and a beautiful follower of Gandhi already married seemed a little too contrived to fit into the generally historical vein of the film. (Even if it weren't contrived, it seemed Hj vunil s' YuT 1' 4P V'STPM. undone by the stupidity and bungling of his staff, as the novel showed, but by his own ignorance and pride. But, as in all Hollywood movies, the hero sees the moment of truth, the bad guys get killed and the good guys are ') Irynnaf little off base for the story being told.) An excellent cast js headed by Horst Buchholz as Godse and Joso Ferrer as the police superintendent.

A fantastic look-alike for Gandhi, J. S. Casshyap, adds a note of newsreel realism to the movie. Striking color shots of India also add authenticity. BILL DUNN.
