He got his doctor's; degreje in biology from the University of Oregon this year based on his four-year study of sea lions. He believes sea lions also can provide clues to what other chemicals from the ocean can harm man as man comes to depend more on the ocean as a source of food. "The sea lion is at the end of Mate spent much of his time counting seals at Simpson Reef and other spots along the Oregon Coast to further his studies of seal migrations. Simpson Reef is a popular breeding and loafing place for seals, as many as 1,000 at a time. Mate got to know many of the sea lions by their cuts and markings.

There are two kinds of sea lions on the Oregon Coast. The Northern sea lion, which is around 4 yards long and weighs a ton, breeds along the entire Pacific Coast. The California sea lion, 2 yards- long and 600 pounds in weight, breeds in Mexico and California. Then the, males swim north. Mate has followed the migrations along the Oregon Coast but says neither he nor anybody else knows where they go from there.

Patricia Welch, president of the Lincoln County Education Association, said this week that teachers will seek a order to tie up remaining district funds should the levy fail. Sea lions are now protected by the federal government.

He will try to get a federal grant so he could install radio transmitters in a few sea lions and then monitor 'their movements through the course of a year.

Mate spotted a few elephant seals off the southern Oregon Coast. It was the first time that these animals, which weigh 4 tons and are 20 feet long, had been seen north of California, At first, be saw four in one year. Now there are a dozen a year. "I want to find out if the same sea lions return to the same places year after year. I want to know if the pups consider their birthplace their home to which they return each year.

"In the breeding areas, there are few younger seals. What happens to themS" Mate asked. In 1970, there waan epidemic of leptospira bacteria among the California sea lions all along the coast. Mate said that this is a common disease among wild and domestic animals, and also among children who swim in rivers. It doesn't bother them tocunuch.

NWBERG Newberg's Jan Erickson has probably had a rough welcome in Mexico.

The 16-year-old Newberg High School junior left here Saturday for Celaya, Mexi and are waiting for a call or letter. "We're really not worried," Mrs. Erickson says. "We think she probably was tori far away to be in any danger." But Mrs. Erickson says Jan may be frightened.

"Tiere are 6,000 new chemicals each year, and many of thern end up in the ocean.

"Wte hope to be able to tell the effects of these chemicals on man by seeing their effect on seals," Mate said. The worst offenders, he believes, are. the polychlorinated biphenyls, whicp areused in plastics. These chemicals have been found in polar bears in the Arctic and in-seals in the Sea lions never go into fres water. They get their drinkin water from their food.

There were 108 bodies of sea lions found on the coast that year, of which Mate found about two-thirds. In the following year, there was more than a 70 per cent drop in the population of California sea lions along the coast.

Sea lions are hardy beasts. They have lived despite some all-out efforts to wipe them out. Thousands used to be slain each year for their oil. Many more thousands were taken for manufacture of dog food. Fishermen hated them, and some do now, because sea lions eat fish.

Oregon paid a bounty on them for msy years; For instance, Oregon paid bounties on 1,387 that were killed in 1925. Mate says the fishermen don't kill many now, but he sees some of the big beasts shot for sport at Simpson Reef. MEN'S LONG SLEEVE SPORT SHIRTS study their anatomy and physiology, and Mate will look for contaminants.
