Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. He was born Sept. 10,1933, in Peru to Ralph and Ura Hatfield. He was married in 1954 to Shirley Davis, who survives. He was in the Navy from 1952 to 1971 and during the past 12 years was an All State Insurance agent in Logansport.

He was graduated from Peru High School in 1951 and received an Associate Business degree from Columbia College, Mo. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Third Degree Knights of Columbus and the American Legion in Delphi and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Mary Queen of Peace Assembly in Frankfort. He was a member of the Logansport VFW and was co-founder of the Carroll County Right To Life organization in 1978. Also surviving are two sons, Anthony, Bloomington, and Patrick, Indianapolis; two brothers, James Bostick, Peru, and Charles Hatfield, Philadelphia, a sister, Mary Ann Berglan, Peru; and two grandchildren.

A son preceded in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Church, Delphi, the Rev. Raymond Wieber officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Baker Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to St.

Dietz Henry Carl Powell Today's Briefing Report Shows Widespread Child Abuse NEW YORK At least 1 million children by the most conservative estimate are abused or neglected nationwide each year, a grand jury report said Saturday. A grand jury empaneled after a scandal involving the rape of dozens of children at a Bronx day-care center said New York State's entire method of handling child abuse cases needs to be overhauled. 28 Prelates Elevated To Rank Of Cardinal VATICAN CITY Pope John Paul II elevated 28 prelates to the rank of cardinal Saturday, including two Americans who are staunch abortion foes and outspoken government critics from Nicaragua, Ethiopia and Poland.

In a solemn ceremony before 15,000 people in St. Peter's Square, the pontiff bestowed the red silk hats that mark princes of the Roman Catholic Church on Archbishops John O'Connor of New York and Bernard Law of Boston and 26 others. In conferring on the men the church's highest honor except for the papacy, John Paul warned that they may face an often hostile world. Shiites Take Sabra And Sbatila BEIRUT, Lebanon Shiite Moslem forces took virtual control of two embattled Palestinian refugee camps Saturday and clashed with defenders of a third camp containing thousands of terrified civilians.

The dispatches from Beirut coincided with reports from the British Broadcasting Corporation and the Sunday Times of London that hundreds of people have been slaughtered by Shiite militiamen in six days of fighting in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Witnesses who escaped from the scene said camp residents were being shot indiscriminantly and grenades were thrown among the wounded gathered at local hospitals, the BBC reported Saturday. Author Robert Nathan Dies At Age 91 LOS ANGELES Robert Nathan, author of more than 50 volumes of poetry and prose, including "Portrait of Jennie" and "The Bishop's Wife," died Saturday of kidney failure, his wife said. He was 91. Nathan, a popular novelist in the 1930s and 40s whose work was the basis of several screenplays, died in his West Los Angeles home following a year-long series of illnesses, said his wife, Amma Lee Nathan, who plays Lila Quartermaine on the television soap opera "General Hospital." Nathan, who was born in New York City in 1894, launched his writing career at Harvard just before the 1920s and served as editor of the Harvard Monthly.

Division died at 8:45 a.m. Friday in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She was born Dec. 1, 1895, in Logansport, to Francis and Hattie Brentlinger Dietrich. She was married in 1917 to Raymond JDietz, who died in 1954.

She retired in 1962 after working more than 20 years as an underwriter for American States Insurance Indianapolis. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Meyer, Flora; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi, the Rev. Raymond Weiber officiating. Entombment will be in Crown Hill Mausoleum, Indianapolis. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Monday in Reinke Funeral Home, where the rosery will be said at 8 p.m. John L. Vanecek John L. Vanecek, 70, Rt. 4, died at 7:55 a.m.

Saturday in his residence. Born Aug. 30,1914, in North Judson, he was the son of Laddie and Mary Uridel Vanecek. He was married Nov. 8, 1941, in North Judson to Myra A.

Noble, who survives. He was an inventory control supervisor for Link Belt Company of Chicago. He was a member of the Moose and the Eagles Lodges. Also surviving are his mother; two, daughters, Amanda Hurdelbrink, Cincinnati, and Minta Fahey, Naperville, three sisters, Adeline Zacek, Chicago; Mildred Risner, North Judson, and Dorothy Gundlach, Rt. 1, Winamac; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Kroeger Funeral Home, with Rev. David Sinclair officiating. Burial will be in San Pierre Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Monday, and prior to the service Tuesday in the funeral home. Moose Lodge services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund or American Cancer Society. RUSSIAVILLE Henry Carl Powell, 93, 511 Greenlawn Fort Wayne, a former Walton resident, died at 3 a.m.

Friday in Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Dec. 1,1892, in Walton. He was a member of Walton Masonic Lodge and Local 232, carpenter's union, Fort Wayne. Surviving is a niece, Lucille Elliott, Walton.

Around Town Circuit Court A six-person jury deliberated only 40 minutes Thursday evening before returning a verdict against the plaintiff, Mary Rlley, in her damage suit against Montgomery Ward Co.

in the Cass Circuit Court. The plaintiff asserted she was injured in a fall in the Ward store in 1976. She filed suit in 1978. The trial opened Tuesday before Judge Robert L. Justice.

The case went to the jury at 4:55 p.m. and the verdict was returned at 5:35 p.m. The plaintiff was represented by Attys. Sondra Knutson and Kelly Leeman. Tom Hirschauer represented the defendant.

Harold Kerkhove, 39, West Lafayette, was fined $640 in Cass Circuit Court on a charge of operating a truck over the maximum wheel weight. Marcus Bault, 27, 834Va W. Melbourne was fined and costs on a charge of speeding 69 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone. Speeders fined $25 and costs were Richard Cdnklin, 33, Burnettsville; Matthew Skelton, 17, 1233 Pleasant Hill; Paul Nolle, 37, Fort Wayne; William Sherman, 117, Lafayette; Edward Hallam, 19, 111 4th and Steve Farrow, 31, South Bend. Fined $25 and costs on other charges were: Karen Woodruff, 26, 1402 Balsam failure to yield the right of way; Stuart Hamilton, 22, Walton, disregarding a stop sign; Michael Vanderveer, 22, Rt.

4, Syracuse, improper passing; Kathleen Haynes, 22, 1013 High operating a vehicle on a beginner's license without a licensed operator; Gilbert Snay 17, 2618 Usher, failure to yield the right of way; Kevin Murray, 18, 1105 20th violation of a restricted license; and Kenneth Bishop, 41, Falmouth, no log book. Dallas Wise, 67, 911 Timbercrest was fined $10 and costs for failure to yield. Fined $5 and costs were Jon Bill 20, Fort Wayne, and Joe Magers, 24, Box 594, Logansport, no registration plate. Assessed only the court costs of $42 was Dallas Stout, 19, Galveston, violation of a restricted license. Two persons who were placed on probation after receiving suspended sentences last month in Cass Circuit Court have been charged by the state with violation of their probation.

They are Todd Alan Richard, Rt. 3, Kokomo, and Tim Young, 1808 Johnson St. Richard was sentenced April 18 to one year for resisting law enforcement and six months for disorderly conduct, with the sentences to run concurrently. The probation violation charge alleges he failed to pay his probation user fee and also failed to pay for the alcohol program he was ordered to take. Young was sentenced April 1 to six months for battery.

The probation violation charge alleges he failed report to the probation officer and failed to pay the court costs and restitution. Misdemeanor charges were filed against five persons. Sonja Heisnman and Cheryl Reed, both of 906 High were charged with battery on Toni Dowden on May 8, causing contusions on her face and head. Gary Hall, 1436 N. Third, and Martin Hall, 614V2 W.

Broadway, were charged with resisting law enforcement, and Scott Stebbins, Fit. 4, was charged with a minor possessing an alcoholic beverage. The will of Bertha C. House was filed for probate in Cass Circuit Court through the law firm of Winslow and Winslow. Pauline Klepfer and Waneta Jones are co- executrices.

Michael Terry, 18, Rt 5, Rochester, was meted a one year suspended sentence by Circuit Judge Robert L. Justice and placed on probation for -driving while intoxicated. He was ordered as a condition of probation to go to Four County Counseling Center for alcohol education and to pay the court costs. His driving privilege was suspended 30 days and restricted 180 days. Jeffery Day, 21, 701 Vi Bringhurst, was fined $25 and costs for driving with an expired license plate.

A false registration charge against Karen Pearson, 24, 507 Plum was dismissed at the request of the state. Police Reports Thursday 7:27 a.m. Theft. Mark Wilson, 'Burrows, reported someone unlocked his vehicle that he had left in the 700 block of North Street for a week and stole clothing, two fishing poles and 25 casette tapes from behind the seats. Logansport Police Department investigated.

7:15 p.m. Theft. Mary Moss, 1509 Erie reported a $50 bill was stolen from a footstool in her living room. LPD. Friday 9:11 a.m.

Missing check. Tammy Barron, 1307 George reported her payroll check for $114 disappeared while she was driving from the First Nationa.1 Bank of Logqansport to the Corral Supermarket and she thinks her small son, who was with her, threw the check out the window. Market, struck the left front door of a car driven by Vergil Stanley, 17, Rt. 6, Rochester, as both were backing from parked positions. LPD. 3:15 p.m. Hit and run accident.

Parked car owned by Phillip Storey, 516 Dizardie, damaged on right front door while it was parked west of the Dutch Mill Tavern. LPD. 3:30 p.m. Bicycle-car accident. Charlotte Langham, 214 1 Wheatland was riding her bicycle down Linden Avenue and ran into a parked car owned by Kenneth Johnson, 215 E.

Arleen Smith, 46, 417 Burlington said her accelerator pedal stuck as she was headed east in the lot of the Main Gas and Grocery and car went through fence at rear of station and through two vacant lots, tearing down several sign posts and coming to a stop when it struck a fence at 310 Burlington Ave. LPD.
