THE HOME NEWS NEW BRUNSWICK, SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 23, 19TJ igan's Defense Tests UCLA's Unstoppable Attack I -1 -T (U vV4-'-. I 111 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS UCLA's thus far unstoppable offense goes against Michigan's unyielding defense in the Los Angeles Coliseum tonight in the weekend's only match-up of nationally-ranked college football teams. Sixth-rated UCLA has rolled up 625 yards on the ground and 188 through the air in beating Nebraska 20-17 and Pitt 38-28. Michigan, jranked 12th allowed only 129 rushing yards and 49 passing yards in a 7-0 victory over Northwestern.

"We are a defensives team first," admits Coach Bo Schem-bechler of the Wolverines, brus-ing off the lack of scoring punch against Northwestern. "Have you ever seen us in openers? Arizona State's Frank Rush was dissatisfied with the play of his defense in last week's nationally-televised. 33-28 triumph over Houston. "We made enough mistakes in the first game to last us a season," he said.

Ordinarily, Kansas State's Dennis Morrison, a left-handed quarterback, could be expected to take advantage of any defen-' sive flaws, but the Wildcats were stunned last week by Brigham Young 32-9 and haven't yet shown the form that made them the preseason darkhorse in the Big Eight. Lions Vikings Renew ruismg Gridiron Rivalry Two College Booters Declared Ineligible delphia, Denver at San Diego and Atlanta at New England. On Monday night, New Orleans hosts Kansas City. The Vikings have relied heavily on their running game the past few seasons-Oscar Reed and Clint Jones combined for 134 yards against the Redskinsbut now they've got a passing attack to go with It. Fran Tarkenton hit for; a pair of touchdowns in his 18 com pletions that netted 233 yards. The Lions, two, have both ground and aerial attacks.

Greg Landry threw only 17 passes last week but his nine completions, three of them for touchdowns, resulted in 207 yards. Steve Owens ripped through the Giants for 113 yards, his best game as a pro. The Bears found one bright spot in last week's loss to At- lanta. Second-year running pen," said Rutgers soccer coach Bill Matyss when told of the decision. "It's unfortunate, but rules must be kept," he added.

Matyas pointed out that rules of playing with professionals and also about the scholastic 1.6 rule are explained before the season to candidates of the Scarlet team. Season Too Short "The soccer season in this country is the Czechoslovakian born Matyas "It only lasts two months. It needs year round activities so such events don't happen again." Hartwick, located in Oneonta, N.Y., was expected to be a Old Dominion Pole Position to Allison THE COLLEGES Colorado State, the victim of a disgusting 41-0 loss to Iowa State, stumbled into the No. 1 spot in the college Bottom Ten. So upset was coach Jerry Wampfler that he reportedly directed one of his assistants to change the locks on the clubhouse doors at half time.

Colorado State quarterbacks threw four interceptions to spark the second of many defeats to come for the Rams. They have yet to score this -1 Biggest -advancer in the Bottom Ten was Iowa, which leaped from No. 9 to No. 4 after, its 21-0 loss to Ohio State. Coach Woody Hayes is so watchful over his new "three yards and a cloud of dust" offense that he was said to have balked at playing on an Astro-Turf, before finally consenting.

In the meantime, disappointing Brown fell to No. 2. The Bruins can't seem to get started this year. back Jim Harrison's 113 yards was the best by a Bear since Gale Sayers hit 100 yards four times in 1969. Bob Thomas, another, second-year man, topped the Rams', runners last week against New Orleans with 144 yards.

Willie Ellison, recovered from a knee injury that kept him mout of most of the opener, may have trouble ousting Thomas from the starting lineup. Daryle Lamonica, who lost his starting quarterback job to Ien Stabler in Oakland's preseason games, won it back in a losing effort against Pittsburgh. Stabler completed five of 12 passes, then George Blanda hit on four of 11 before Lamonica came on to connect on eight of 10 for 172 yards and two touchdowns to rookie Mike Siani. Pittsburgh and Cincinati, unbeaten in the American Conference's Central Division, will probably be vying all season for this title. The Steelers, led by Terry Bradshaw, may have to go with a pair of rookies, running back Franco Harris and tight end John McMakin, since John Fuqua and Larry Brown are injured and doubtful starters.

Ken Anderson, who led the Bengals past New England, is expected to get the starting quarterback spot over Virgil Carter. I Tim Van Galder, -St. Louis' 28-year-old rookie quarterback whose 71-yard pass play with Jackie Smith set up the winning touchdown against Baltimore, leads the Cards against Washington's "Over-the-Hill-Gang." The 'Skins will go again with Billy Kilmer at quarterback over Sonny Jurgensen. The New York Giants, who must face Dallas' withering passing game Craig Morgon to Ron Sellers, Lance Alworth, Mike Montgomery, Billy Parks, Bob Hayes and others may have to do it without their mainstay in the secondary. Safety Carl Lockhart, with thigh and shoulder injuries, might be replaced by rookie Charlie Christ.

The Giants will start Randy Johnson at quarterback in place of Norm Snead. Johnson has recovered from a preseason shoulder separation. Colt Hold Edg Baltimore has beaten the Jets in four of five games but that one loss was in Super Bowl III and hopes running back Don Nottingham and wide receiver Cotton Speyrer can help keep the regular-season streak alive by filling in successfully for injured Norm Bulaich and Eddie Hinton. Houston quarterback Dan Pastorini was hospitalized for a day with a throat infection but is still expected to start against Miami. San Francisco running back Vic Washington, who missed the opening game, will start.

Ken Willard will also be available for the 49er's clash with Buffalo but Larry Schrei-ber will be the other starting runner. Mike Phipps will be Cleveland's starting quarterback, with Bill Nelsen waiting in the wings as usual. And Philadelphia's No. 1 draft choice, quarterback John Reaves, will be ready to take over if Pete Liske's strained shoulder gives him trouble. THE RAMKING5 LAST WEEK NEXT DEFEAT 0-41.

UCLA's Pepper Rodgers, beaten 38-0 by, Michigan last season, says there "aren't that many super defensive teams," but he puts Michigan in that category, adding, "This year, we hope to score a touchdown against them." He said that Michigan's defense "is just as good as Nebraska's." Although UCLA scored 20 points against Nebraska, the Cornhuskers helped immeasurably by turning over the ball five times on three fumbles and two interceptions. Nwd Turnover "To beat Michigan we need turnovers," Rodgers said hopefully. "Bo has got to play some people who will give us the ball." And he also said that his "Wishbone backfield quarterback Mark Harmon and running backs James McAlister, Kermit Johnson and Gary Campbell have plenty of room for improvement despite their impressive first two outings.

Police Charge Jurgensen with Drunken Driving WASHINGTON MAP) -Washington Redskins quarterback Sonny Jurgensen was arrested early yesterday and charged with drunken driving in suburban Camp Springs, Md police said. The 38-year-old National Football League veteran was released after posting $250 bond. A hearing on the charge is scheduled for Oct. 17 in Upper Marlboro, Md.

According to police, Jurgensen was specifically charged with operating under the influence of intoxicating beverages, the more serious of two drunken driving charges. Bowling League Meeting Oct. 1 EDISON The Central Jersey Women's Bowling Associa-. tion will have its organization meeting Oct. 1 at Edison Lanes at 2 p.m.

The group will elect national and state delegates and announce plans for the annual bowling tournament at Brunswick-Carteret Lanes in February. All members are invited to attend. By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS "When Detroit and Minnesota Vikings Coach Bud Grant once commented, "no- body wins. It's just a matter of which team is ahead when the game ends." That pretty much describes the warfare that results from the collisions of these two powerhouses in tie National Football Conference's Central Division. The last eight times, Minnesota's been ahead at the end, and it's been those victories that have paved the way to the Vikes' four straight divisional championships.

At the moment, though, it's the Lions who are ahead. They, beat the New York Giants 30-16 in their opener while Minnesota lost 24-21 to Washington. And if Detroit can withstand the Vikings' typically-crushing defense, there's a good chance the Lions will have sole possession of the division lead when this weekend's National Football League games end, Chicago, like Minnesota, will be out to even its record but the Bears have a formidable foe in the Los Angeles Rams. Green Bay, currently sharing the Central lead with Detroit, surprised Cleveland 26-10 a week ago. "LIVE" LOBSTERS LW'--iaSJg By LOU ECONOMOPOULOS Home News Sports Writer What started out as a great breakthrough in American soccer, now has turned into a disaster. When Connie Seredin, one of the founders of the American Basketball Association, had ideas last year of starting a soccer team in the semi-professional American Soccer League made up of American college players, he was lauded for bis efforts. The team, called. Nor'East United and based in Long Island, was highly successful in its first year of operation in the asl. Until last weekend.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association and Hartwick College announced last weekend that two of Hartwick star players, both from New Jersey, will be ineligible for the 1972-73 college season because they participated in unauthorized soccer competition by playing for Nor'East United. All-American junior Edward Austin Jr. of Harrison and James Harrison of Kearney, also a played along with a dozen other players from colleges on the amateur Nor'East club. Hartwick officials reported that the two had asked the manager of the Nor'East United team whether he had received permission for them to play and he repeatedly told them he had.
