RaEnie Scholarship Indiana college students majoring in political science, government, journalism, radio or television have until March 15 to apply for the Rainie McCormick Scholarship award. This is the 18th year the Indiana Federation of Republican Women has presented the award in memory of Rainie McCormick, longtime executive secretary of the federation. Two applicants from each of the 10 Congressional districts may be nominated for final review by the IFRW scholarship committee. SCHOOL BRIEFS Compiled from Pharos-Tribune staff reports Blue Ribbon Parenting Sessions Tuesday A Blue Ribbon Parenting workshop is planned for Tuesday to help parents by providing information on important parenting issues. The event will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School.

Hanna, a senior at Pioneer High School, and Angela Zimpleman, a senior at Caston High School, were oral contestants in the 25th annual Eisenhower Memorial Scholarship competition on Sunday, March 5, at the University of Indianapolis. The oral competition was the final stage of competition for the $10,000 scholarship awards. The winners are expected to be announced next month. The contestants were chosen on the basis of statewide competition, The contest is open each fall to all public, private and parochial high school seniors in the upper half of their senior classes in the state. The scholarships are offered to Indiana high school seniors planning to attend certain private and independent colleges and universities.

The purpose of the program is to develop potential leaders with high academic achievement, patriotic awareness and belief in free market economics, Hanna is the daughter of Herbert and Joyce Hanna, Rt 1, Logansport, and Zimpleman is the daughter of Jack and Diane Zimpleman, Fulton. Art Association Selects Student Winners Through March 19, the Logansport Art Association will feature the Youth Art Show and Competition at the Art Center, 424 Front St. Featuring Cass County students in grades kindergarten through eighth, the center is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and noon to 3 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday. Teachers felt that "place" awards are too competitive for children in the K-5 age range, therefore, Judge's Awards were given instead. Winners in each category are listed below. Pioneer Bee Winners Announced Several Pioneer students in grades six through eight participated in the school spelling bee March 7. The sixth-grade and school champion was Ashley Beasy, who won a plaque, trophy and $25. Other sixth-graders participating were Aaron Collins, Josh Homburg, Keith Jasmantas and Shawn Baker. The seventh-grade champion was Emily Rouch, who won a plaque. Other seventh-grade participants were Brandon Greiner, Alicia Frank, Dustin Mock and Michelle Morgan.

The eighth-grade champion was Ann Goodrich, who won a plaque and $10. Other eighth-graders participating were Heather Ide, Hollie Trainer, Barbi Walls and Abigail Webber, The 1994 Pioneer and Pharos-Tribune Five- County Regional Spelling Bee champion was Amber Swartzell. Pioneer 'Wonderful' Students Named ROYAL CENTER The staff at Pioneer Junior-Senior High School have started a recognition program to identify students who try especially hard during the month and who exemplify good citizenship. Every month, the teachers and administrators each nominate one student who has improved in grades or other areas. The student's picture is taken with the nominating staff member, and the photo is displayed on the Wall of Wonderful.

Students who won honors for the month of February were the following: Seventh grade Diane Anderson, Matt Blume, Michelle Combs, Stephanie Knowles, Dustin Mock and Brant Odom; Eighth grade Dusty Baxter, Ann Goodrich (two nominations), Casey Heishman, Danny Jackson and Kellie Weaver; Ninth grade Nathan Blume, Steph Goze, Tayt Odom, Andy Rusk and Tara Sayler; Eleventh grade Kyle Davis, Heather Hall and Tom Shaw; Twelfth grade Jodi Fugate, Jennifer Ide, Denise Kerr, Matt McNeil, Kelly Redding, Aimee Smith, Tom Smith, Jody Stratton, Brian Strong, Joe Swartz, Jessica Tilleraas and Greta Young. Fairview Students Attend Youth Summit The First Indiana Youth Environmental Summit was held March 4 in Hancock County at Eden Elementary School in Representing the Fairview Elementary Outdoor Classroom were Adam Army, Jon Blair, Marley Favors, Megan Michael and Megan Peters. Adult sponsor was Susan Nesper, teacher and Environmental Education Association of Indiana member. They joined over 500 participants from Indiana. More than 300 students in three through eight attended with 90 adult supervisors from 65 schools with 31 counties represented.

Students learned about environmental careers, the rainforest and its connection to them by participating in songs and dances, and attended sessions that covered recycling projects available to do at school. They also used plays to tell about community action projects in parks, prairie restoration, beads, beavers and buckskins, an environmental exchange box and Dr. Wildweed and developing one's own character. The summit was sponsored by the EEAI and hosted by the Greenfield Central Community School Corporation. Columbia Speech Team Ends Season The Columbia Speech Team ended the season with a fifth-place trophy at the Canterbury Invitational March 4.

Trie following students received ribbons: Marie Carlson, second place in humorous; Ryan Partridge, first place in drama; Kristi Kite, third, and Angela Jones, second, in oratorical interpretation; Michelle Kindem, fifth, and Vinessa Rollins, fourth, in radio; Matt Molaski, eighth, Cassi Scherer, fifth, and Hillary Morrow, fourth, all in impromptu; and Amy Strasser, eighth place, and Jackie Jone.s, second place. Georgia Dahmon and Laura Austen each received seventh-place ribbons in poetry. Rebekka Gaby won third-place in poetry, and in duo interpretation, the team of Sarah Molaski and Amy Langley received an eighth-place ribbon. Kristi Kite and Holly Russell received third place. Anastacia Armick and Michelle Black were included in the competitive team.

David Nihiser, Diana Armick, Joan Scherer and Joyce Pasel accompanied the team as judges. Logansport High School speech team member Jessica Pasel also accompanied the team. Logan Senior Wins Wal-Mart Scholarship Tom Leake, store manager of the Logansport Wal-Mart, recently announced the selection of Lindsay Bass of Logansport as the 1995 recipient of the $1,000 Wal-Mart Foundation Community Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each spring by Wal-Mart to an area college or university-bound high school senior and is payable over a one- year period. Bass, a senior at Logansport High School, plans to attend the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla.

In addition, scholarship alternates sleeted are first alternate, Dennis Goodman of Galveston, who plans to attend the University of Evansville, and Molly Woodhouse of Royal Center, who is headed to Manchester College. Recognized for their efforts serving as judges in scholarship selection are Wayne Erwin, roger Troutman and Dave Patty. The Logansport Wal-Mart Foundation community scholarship is one of more than 2,000 scholarships totaling more than $2 million being given by the Bentonville, retail chain throughout its 49-state trade territory. Jazz Ensemble Receives Division 1 Rating Members of the Logansport Jazz Ensemble traveled to Wabash High School Saturday, March 4, to perform in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Jazz Concert. group received a superior First Division rating in only its second year of competing.
