The combined vote of Cass and Kosciusko Counties for superintendent of public instruction was almost evenly divided, with 20 votes for Jean Merritt and 23 votes for Harold Negley, the winner. The delegates from the two counties voted on the same machine. The Miami, Fulton, and Grant County vote was 33 for Merritt and only 15 for Negley. This was believed to have been largely a protest vole against Negley's attempts to force the closing of the Kewanna High School in Fulton County. Fulton County people particularly have been angered at the harassment of Kewanna by the State Department of Education.

In the contest for attorney general, the Cass-Kosciusko voting machine showed 4 for Bogard, 10 for Fisher, 8 for Pearson, 4 for Reppa and 19 for Young on the first ballot, with Kosciusko County reportedly providing most of the Young votes. On the second ballot, the vote on that machine was 4 for Bogard, 3 for Fisher, 31 for Pearson, 3 for Reppa and 4 for Young, most of the Young supporters having switched to Pearson, who was the winner. General Tire Closing Peru Plant; Wabash Moving Line PERU General Tire in Peru will end its operations July 1, employees were told Friday. The plant has been operating with a third of its normal work force, at only twenty percent production. The decision to close the plant followed an announcement by the company that a major production line from the Wabash plant would be moved to Arkansas after representatives of United Rubber Workers Local 626 rejected wage and benefit compromises the company had proposed. fv Peru employees and Fire Destroys Automobile supervisors will be placed on layoff status effective July 1 in spite of the fact that Local 626 and the Peru plan reached an agreement June 4 which would extend the contract for another year. The Peru plant, which manufactures metal components for rubber bushings, has experienced financial losses in the past few years.

The 36 laid-off employees will be elibible for unemployment and the eight supervisors from the Peru plant may be offered positions at other General Tire plants. Plant officials say they will move the Wabash plant production line to a Batesville, plant and lay off half of the Wabash plant's 400-person work force. A company spokesman said that the workers at the Arkansas plant earn an average $5 hourly wage, compared to the average $8.55 hourly wage earned by the Wabash workers. Union officials said they would have accepted some of the company's compromises but not the entire proposal. The company's offer, besides asking a wage freeze and cancelling cost-of-living increases for two years, would have restricted the union's future bargaining power.

Workers at the Logansport plant have already agreed to the company's compromise proposals, which included a wage increase of only $1 per hour over the next two years instead of $2 "per hour. In return, the company promised to maintain stable employment and perhaps to transfer other operations to the local plant 'and bring back some workers aJreadv laid off.
