I Wow, 4fcouf Those lNW Tkt TtatM Pram The N.V. McrcM Trikww WASHINGTON Now, about that pair of expensive, alligator cowboy boots bearing the presidential seal which President Johnson is supposed to have accepted from that El Paso boot company: The White House said yesterday he didn't ask for those boots, didn't agree to accept them, and sent them right back without ever putting them on. THE TONY Lama Boot however, still had a version that was a little different. They said the first pair of boots was returned because they didn't fit Johnson's feet, but that a pair of his old shoes were sent along with them, to assure a proper fit on a second pair. Well, the President sent the second pair back, too, said the White House.

Why did he send the company the old pair of shoes? The White House didn't have any explanation for this. Presidential Press Secretary Bill Moyers said yesterday that the boots were a gift of the people of El Paso and were handed to a White House staff member when the President was there last fall. The boot company said the boots were a gift from the boot company on behalf of the people of El Paso and were handed to the President personally by a company official "TO MY KNOWLEDGE, that Is Inaccurate," said Moyers. He said Johnson has received about four dozen pairs of gift cowboy boots since he became President and always has returned them. "The President has his own boots, doesn't he, Bill," a reporter suggested.

"That's right," replied Moyers. -UPI TUtphotO Tho Controversial 'Presidential' Boots St. ftttnbwf Times, mirf, StyttnAtr It ItU III 1 1 II. i mi ii ii liil 1 iv I in A aja UU yy vl-y LJu -ill. Poet Sandburg In Hospital onnm (i7 pasmuE in Ml ''Bl 'Bi k'ttWl IN 10 DAYS nmrwezas tks u.ca.

After filling out his application papers at the Culver City, branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles, the would be driver holder of a temporary license went out to get his car for the road test. It was parked on the department lot. He got in and backed it up. And up, and up, and up. Clear back to the Department of Motor Vehicles building and right through the wall.

It was the third straight time he had flunked the test. "Don't mention my name," he asked as he eyed the wreckage. "I'm in enough trouble already." Chess Champ Faces Uphill Fight U.S.

chess champion Bobby Fischer has an uphill fight on his hands when he resumes a crucial match today with Yugoslav chess master Borislav Ivkov. Ivkov was in a stronger position than Fischer when their match in the Havana based Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament was postponed and then adjourned Friday after 41 moves were played. The postponement came when Hurricane Betsy knocked out communications between Havana and New York, where Fischer is playing via cable. The U.S.. State Department refused to let him go to Communist Cuba for the tournament.

Whoever wins the match will gain undisputed possession of first place in the tourney at the half way mark. If it ends in a draw, Fischer would be in a first-place tie with Ivkov and Vassily Smyslov of the Soviet Union. va to 3 Vol. to 5.95 I ST.
