South Salem put the only blemish on Corvallis' Valley League record last season and the Spartans, who haven't beat en the Saxons since 1961, are By MARK FAULCONER Capital Journal Sports Writer The Valley and Coast Leagues, at mid-season, are finally ready to begin league football play. And for Valley powers Cor-vallis and South Salem, what a beginning it's going to be. That's the prep football picture for this weekend, which finds action split between tonight and Friday evening due to the statewide teachers' inser-vice day Friday. All but one Coast-Valley League game has been moved ahead to tonight, the Valley League will wait until Friday and all other local teams are split up about half and half.

After four weeks of non-league competition, the Valley League moves into a five-game league schedule with defending champion Corvallis and South Salem expected to fight it out for the 1970 title. And those two clubs will clash Friday, at South Salem, in a game that could conceivably decide the Valley championship on opening night. Corvallis is 4-0 in non-counting action and is ranked No. 1 in the sports writers' poll, while South is 3-1 and sixth-rated in the poll. McNary (3-1) and North Salem (1-3), however, are both potential contenders, while Lebanon (2-2) and Albany (0-4) 1W- California typewriter jockeys would like you to think the Rose Bowl berth is at stake when Stanford and the University of Southern California collide Saturday afternoon.

They reason that all Stanford lost in the setback to Purdue last week was prestige. (For the record, Stanford Coach John Ralston said it was a case of Purdue being "mentally prepared to play football while we were flat and obviously not playing up to The winner, Los Angeles and Bay Area football authors reason, can arrange for Pasadena reservations sometime late Saturday afternoon. Some of their readers may buy this pigskin propaganda but there are two who won't. That would be Ralston and USC Coach Johnny McKay. Don't look now but there are at least three other teams at this writing with a good shot at the Pacific-8 definitely after revenge Friday The game is a "must win" encounter if either team is to make it to this year's state playoffs.

Coryallis relies on a powerful rushing attack, sparked by Darrion Morray, Don Reynolds and quarterback Mike Riley. The long, breakaway run has been Corvallis big weapon, and of the Spartans' 15 touchdowns so far this season, 10 have been scored In this fashion Last week against Grants Pass, for instance, Reynolds scored on runs of 34 and 64 yards while Riley carried the ball on a 64-yard TD run. South Both teams are coming off non-league victories last week. In the CVL, east division contender Central should have an easy time with 0-2 Sandy, while west division hopeful Dallas should also have little trouble with 0-2 Tillamook, Thursday. St.

Helens (2-1) and Forest Grove (3-0), however, will battle it out in a crucial eastern match that will help decide that division's title. Second ranked Stayton is home with North Marion in Capital Conference action tonight, while Chemawa will host No. 5-ranked Gladstone in a Friday CC clash. Willamina puts its 2-0 Yawa-ma League record on the line against Yamhill-Carlton tonight, while in Friday play Dayton will risk its 2-0 mark against 1-1 Nestucca. Coast League action tonight features Reedsport at Newport and Siuslaw at Taft in league openers.

Siuslaw has made the strongest non-league showing, 4-0. "The two Stanford runners are outstanding," he said after a one hour, 45-minute workout Wednesday. "They are very fast and very strong and they are also outstanding pass receivers." He was speaking of Jackie Brown and Hillary Schockey. Mistakes Bug Cat BERKELEY, Calif.

(AP) -The California Bears, losers of three of their first four games this season, are "working to avert future mistakes," Coach Ray Willsey says. Rush Scares VW Pick Your Size-Pick Your Price start a winning car in 21 tries mo accurate, Bobby Moore found out that running at people could be just as exciting and profitable as running away against Washington State. With sophomore quarterback Dan Fouts showing the poise of a senior to go with his passing skill and journeyman quarterback Tom Blanchard on the mend, the Ducks have reason to believe they have the balance to give the Bruins fits. UCLA Coach Tommy Prothro long ago removed the black arm band that came with the loss of Cure-ton.

Runners named Arthur Sims, Randy Tyler and Gary Campbell have combined to give the Bruins big chunks of real estate. Quarterback Dennis Dummit has done what everyone expected him to do rewrite the UCLA record book with his passing arm. He's second in the conference behind only Plun-kett in passing yardage. Fouts, the lad the Bay Area let off the hook, is third. A win for the Ducks, of course, is a must if they're to be taken seriously the rest of the way.

Meantime, there's a team on the shores of Lake Washington that at this writing has to be considered a "dark horse" in the Run for the Roses. The Washington Huskies host California Saturday in its first league game after sandwiching a close loss to mighty Michigan between romps past Michigan State and Navy. Coach Jim Owens, after two disastrous seasons in Seattle, where losing football games is a major crime, has the Huskies in a winning frame of mind. Huskies in Future The Huskies have future dates with USC, Stanford, UCLA and Oregon. They could turn the conference upside down.

A loss for Stanford may not be fatal for the Indians this early in the race but it could mean the loss of the Heisman Trophy for Jim Plunkett, a piece of hardware he richly deserves. The Purdue gamp had to be traumatic for this amazing young man who is 499 yards from becoming the NCAA total offensive leader of all time. With seven games left eight if the Tribe puts up its tepees in Pasadena only a broken right arm can keep Plunkett from heading the all-time list because he's chasing two players who have since graduated. They are Steve Ramsey, North Texas State, and Virgil Carter, Brigham Young. Ramsey finished with 6568 yards, Carter with 6354.

Plunkett, for whom 300-yard afternoons are just routine, may never forget last Saturday. He finished with just 173 net yards and had five passes intercepted to give him a 6069 career total. There, seems little doubt Stanford was guilty of what they call in the trade "looking past an opponent." After USC's Ron Ayala still very much in evidence beat them last season with a 34-yard field goal on the last play of the game, this year's date with the Trojans became more important than a college diploma for Stanford incumbents. 364 Days to Think Even Ralston, a firm believer of the "one game at a time" theory, said this week: "I guess you could say that this game has been our goal for the past 364 days our guys will be mentally sharp for this one you can bet on it." The defensive "Wild Bunch" is gone at USC but the Trojans have made up for it with unpolluted power on offense with an average of 533 yard3 in four games. Tailback Clarence.

Davis is averaging more than 100 yards a game to lead the Pac-8 rushing list. Ralston says "losing to Purdue was not the end of the world for any of our players, and right away they started talking about the USC game." An upset win by Oregon and it would have to be labeled an upset and 9 Washington win over California would make the Pacific-8 race a five-team clam-bake regardless of the result of the USC-Stanford game. It's a good bet the Pac-8 representative at Pasadena won't be known until the round of Big Games Nov. 21. That's the way it was figured before the season started.
