GQBDe imgt Leaeersliro 1 Tax Relief Nature Section 2 Salem, Oregon, Thursda, July 24, 1969 Page 15 Be By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Republican and Democratic Oregon House leaders sparred today at long range over tax relief and -what the people want. Rep. Floyd H. Hart, R-Med-ford, chairman of the House Taxation Committee, issued a statement saying Democrats "are showing their usual incon sistency on the question, of property tax.relief." He took note of an announcement by House Democrats that they were planning a series of seminars around the state. Hart said that when the Republicans "proposed the same approach of sampling public opinion on the question of property tax relief" six months ago, the Democrats were sharp in their criticism.

He said Rep.si Jason Boe, D-Reedsport, said the Republican proposal for town meetings was "a traveling circus." "Unless Boe now wants to be considered inconsistent, he will be required to live with his foolish comments of six months ago." -Boe said, "The Republican trip really was a circus. They hired an advance public relations man and were taking staff, committee members and wives and all at taxpayer expense." "Ours," he continued, "is a people's thing. And we are paying for it ourselves. The taxpayers aren't." What they were talking about was this: During the legislative session last winter the Republican-controlled House Taxation Commit tee proposed holding a series of. meetings in various parts of the state to get views on the tax pro gram.

The series was cancelled by bad weather. At a meeting of House DemcK crats in Salem recently in the wake of the people's 8-1 rejection of the Republican sales tax package the Democrats de? cided to hold a series of what was called seminars to sound out sentiment for an initiative for a new school tax base and for tax changes. Boe said today they will be held probably in late September.
