C-5 THE SUNDAY HOME NEWS NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., SUNDAY, JANUARY 31, 1971 Popowski Readies for 'Project Rico' Sflearfls 'm -Pa Sfloips a' Dy Ed Albin ffl handle bunts and making the one hand flip, charging ball hit to the left and right and throwing bunts to second base on the force play. Manager Eddie Kasko entrusted the project to Popowski once the trades with the White Sox and Angels were consummated. In the Angel deal, the Red Sox gave up Billy Conigliaro for relief pitching and infield defense in Griffin and Tatum. Hopefully, the Red Sox will be able to make double plays. Petrocelli has the fondest affection for Popowski.

In fact, the two have been almost a baseball "father-son" duo. 'The Best Thing' Commenting on the Tony Conigliaro swap, Popowski said it was the best thing for the Red Sox and the Conigliaro brothers. "If you want something, you must give up something. We felt as long as Tony was on the team, brother Bill wouldn't get a chance," Ed stated. "We feel Billy can do the job." Popowski, who handles third base, says he's been fortunate in center and Reggie Smith in right.

Asked to evaluate Yaz, Eddie felt he "was the best player in the American League," considering all factors. "When you live with players a whole season, you get a good idea about each," he said. "Yaz is one of the very best in the he's no troublemaker." What does the coach do in the off-season? Eddie has been taking it easy. In fact, this is the first time he's not held a job. "I've been going hunting or taking walks just about every day," he noted.

"I walk about six miles a day." Ed and Mary have five grown children (Carol, Sherri, Terry, Rick and Randy). Pops has been spending much time with them and the grandchildren. Although the years have ticked away, Eddie is still full of pep and vigor. "They call me "Pops" because of my my age," the delightful big league coach concluded. er Bosox players, Yax made his pro debut in the minors with Popowski as manager.

The Red Sox signed Yaz off the Notre Dame campus and placed their bonus baby in the Popowski incubator for development. It was a matter of days when Popowski and Boots Nek-ola, a Red Sox scout, decided that Yaz would be better off in the outfield and not at shortstop. As a flychaser, he could concentrate on his hitting. At the start of the 1960 season, Popowski was originally signed to manage Alpine in the Texas League. Just before the season opened, Gene Mauch, who was managing Minneapolis, took the Philly job.

The Red Sox moved Popowski to Minneapolis. Pops put Yaztrzemski in left field and never took him away from the position for the balance of the season. Yaz will be going back to the oufield this season following the big trades. Pops thinks it will be a good move all the way around with the probability that Billy C. will take over of David infielder, commented.

Contrary to some views, a coach puts in a full At least, Popowski does. Duties Explaining his duties, Pops said he generally arrives at the park at 8:30 a.m. for a 2 p.m. game. For an 8 p.m.

night game, he'll be on hand at 3 p.m. "It's like working a second shift," he said with a chuckle. Among his daily chores is the job of keeping tabs on balls used in batting practice and which should be used for other purposes. He is also available for special sessions for individuals. That type of infield instruction was the purpose of his special 10-day visit to the Boston camp in the Winter Instructional League last November.

Carl Yastremski was his demonstrator. "Yaz does a helluva job," Pops noted. "We showed the prospects the finer points of the game, from infield play to base running." This is another mutual admiration society. Like so many oth powski feels will definitely make the Red Sox a contender, "If we 'could get a defensive catcher like Jeff Torborg and possibly another relief pitcher', we would be a solid threat," the Sayreville resident said. "Baltimore is still the team to beat but the Yanks and Tigers are stronger which should help," Pops said.

"They should be able to knock off Baltimore. If we can play .500 against the Orioles, we'll have a good chance." Project Rico Then the conversation got around to defense and "Project Rico." The Red Sox needed defense in the infield, particularly. When Aparicio became expendable in Chicaeo, the Bosox made the deal. They feel Aparicio will plug the hole at short and Petrocelli will adjust at third base. "Rico has good moves to the right but is somewhat weak to the left.

With Aparicio at short and Rico at third, we should be much stronger defensively," the 61-year coach said. The project in spring training will be to give Petrocelli a cash course on playing third, Pops explained. That includes learning the cutoff plays on balls hit to left field, how to By EMERY KONICK JR. Home News Sports Writer SAYREVILLE Baseball has been a way of life for Eddie Popowski for more than 40 years now so it should come as no surprise that the little guy is anxiously awaiting spring training which is just two weeks ago. It might come as a surprise, though', to hear that Popowski will have a special project upon reaching Winter Haven, Florida.

The name of the game will be "Project Rico." Rico stands for All-Star Rico Petrocelli who is slated to become the Red Sox' new third baseman. It will be Popowski's responsibility to help theBoston shortstop make the transition. The 5'-5 Popowski is looking forward to the challenge. And he's looking forward to the new season. "I think we have a good shot," the veteran Bosox coach said in discussing the team's pennant chances.

"Rico should have good range at third base and Apari-cio is a young 35 going on 36 at shortstop. Everyone is raving about young Doug Griffin," Popowski observed. The Beantowners made a couple of major trades during the winter, trades which Po in nis iour-year Dig league coaching career. "Both Dick Williams (now at Oakland) and Kasko have been good men" the former House mmm fw mm New Indianapolis Qualifying Format There seems to be some mixup of late in regards to the new qualifications this year for the Indianapolis 500 race and I would like to clear up this matter for many of the area USAC championship car followers. As it stands now, the drama of qualifications for the 500-mile Memorial Day race may be gone, but on the other hand, a lot of the drivers and car owners are happy and that's important.

According to Speedway owner Anton "Tony" Hul-man, the United States Auto Club has approved a regulation change assuring all certified cars a shot at the No. 1 starting position and it is my belief that is a good and fair chance for the "big" guy as well as the "little" man to qualify at Indy. In the modern history of the race, which paid the sports' first million-dollar purse last year, the pole position has gone to the fastest car on the first of four qualifying days. That was true, even when bad weather delayed the 10-mile runs and only one car got out on opening day. This wasn't driving competition, nor was it skill.

It was pure, sheer luck. The new regulations now provide a list be made of all cars declared ready to go at the time of drawings for the order of qualifying runs. If any of them are still ready on opening day and have not been given a chance, tne list will carry over to subsequent days. And starting this year, the Indy race will always be staged on Saturday due to the new Federal holiday change, adding a few nice pre-race qualifying days for race fans to enjoy. No matter how long it takes, the starting order for the first list of qualifiers will not be determined until all nave had an opportunity to run under the new revision.

Cars qualified after that will line-up, day by day in order of speeds, behind the original group. Drivers often have made the 10-mile trial runs on opening day in spite of dangerous crosswinds. They are not permitted to run in rain or on a wet track. The drivers tried to make a "gentlemen's agreement" not to run on the opening day of the 1955 qualifications. The wind was fierce but Jerry Hoyt, who said he had entered no agreement, went out in the closing minutes and won the pole position.

He lasted only 100 miles in the race and had retired when Bill Vukovich, gunning for a third straight 500 victory, was killed a few laps later. Hoyt himself died while racing less than six weeks later, at Oklahoma City. Trials this year will be May 15, 16, 22 and 23, with the race ustlf Saturday, May 29. The fee to enter a car is $1,000 per machine. Hulman expects about 70 to compete for this year's 33 lucrative starting spots.

SCCA Sports Car Convention Is Big The last day of the 1971 Annual Convention for Sports Car Club ot America will include some unique and interesting eveiiis. In addition to seminars for SCCA's various committees and specialities, this year's bash will have something ieally new. The now traditional British Leyland Gymkhana will be titled "The Bean Bash," in honor of Boston's famous food. It is to be run on an iced (correct) parking lot at Suffolk Downs, site of the New England Auto Show. The cars will be three identical MGB-GTS without benefit of snow tires.

The event is open to all Convention Registrants, and should prove an interesting comparison of driving styles among drivers from all sections of the country. In its second year, the show will feature a large SCCA exhibit, including National Champion Oscar Kova-Ieski's Auto World McLaren M6B; the Formula Tecno, of Dual National Champion and President's Cup Winner, Skip Barber; a Formula A McLaren repersenting the Continental Championship; Bob Sharp's Divisional Champion, Datsun 240Z; two of the famous Racing Triumph's from Group 44 and a host of other hotrunning motor sport machinery. Baltimore Set As Dodge Colt Land Although the professional football season is over, a new season for Colts is just beginning. Dodge Division, Chrysler Motors Corporation, announced this past Wednesday that it has selected Baltimore as the port of entry for the sub-compact Dodge Colts which will be introduced in the East Coast markets this spring. The Port of Baltimore was selected because it is the largest available port facility for cars in the East, because it iias excellent transportation facilities for transhipment, and because it provides a good, central location. The lirst shipment of Dodge Colts is expected to arrive in Baltimore during March. The cars will go on sale in all the major Eastern -metropolitan areas which cover Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York as well.

Dealer showings these locations is scheduled for April. It is planned that Colts destined for Dodge dealerships from Maine to Florida will be shipped through the Baltimore Port. All Star Racing League Expanding Turning over the rather dormant stock car racing side here in the East, word reaches us from Commissioner Lou Figari of the All Star Racing League that the league will expand from the present eleven track setup to sixteen. In maKing the announcement Figari said, "The additional five tracks will be selected from nine tracks in the Northeast area showing the most interest in participating in the League. A committee comprised of several members of the newspaper and radio media along with representatives of the original five tracks which make up the league will make recommendations in selecting the new participants." The original tracks are Nazareth, Flemington, N.J.; Orange County Fair in Middletown, N.Y.; Albany-haratoga, H.Y.

and Islip, L.I. The league expanded to eleven last year, picking up many of the surrounding state racetracks. Ten teams competed and Maynard Troyer of Spenceport, N.Y. representing Lancaster Speedway, captured the driving championship. $999 $799 $749 $699 Almott $1700 under orig.
