Yesterday was schooling day at Bennlng, and, although- a driving ram swept the course during the morning hours and kept many of the jumpers out of the Held, there was a good sized representation of the steeplechase contingent sent over the fences. T.

S. Martin went a turn and a half of the fleld without a blunder, takiu.j the jumps cleverly. He is a good horse through the field and will be a hard one to beat In any company. Judge White, a green one at-the jumping game, showed promise, and another new one at steeple- chasing, Hyperion, went head and head with Bound Brook for a mile, when he unseated his rider. Hyperion jumped well and will probably make good at the cross country sport.

Pioneer was sent two turns of the field with a green h.unter and easily of the hunter when he got ready. Souvlgi- ny, who disappointed many last fall, showed much improvement over his last year's efforts, going at a rattling pace for two miles. He was accompanied by Northvllle, "Billy" Garth's promising jumper of last year, who also showed decided improvement over his fall form when he appeared to be sour and repeatedly refused his fences. Gus Strauss went a turn and a half of the fleld, going well within himself and taking the jumps without a 'blunder. James Boden arrived from California with a carload of horses including Ormonde's Right and Niblick, both of which look well.

Jerome Calls Attention to Loopholes in Percy-Gray Law. New York, Mar. Attorney Jerome to-day sent a letter to Senator George B. Agnew to be read before the committee on codes of the legislature in Albany to-morrow. In it Mr.

Jerome regrets Ms Inability to be present at the hearings upon the bills designed to prevent gambling upon the race tracks of the, State, and sets forth his position regarding these measures. He declares that the so-called Percy-Gray law and the present form of section -461 of penal code do not represent an honest effort to carry Into effect the. provision of the State constitution concerning gambling. He adds: "The bills you have introduced embody an honest effort to carry put this provision of the constitution, and would, I believe, if enacted into law, be effective to this end. If nothing else is done, at least section 351 of the penal code should be so amended as to make violation a misdemeanor.

This would give a district attorney a chance to get some violators into jail for at least a short time. Finos are only an indirect system of license, and the present minimum Imprisonment of one year in a State prison, the offense being a felony, is so severe a punishment that courts inflict Imprisonment, and public opinion would not support them in giving a mere card hanger in a pool room a sentence of one year In a State prison." Sable, by Nice Youngster, and May Repeat Feats of Hamburg's Rival. Special to The Washington Post. New York, Mar.

Llttlefleld, the veteran trainer, who handles the that will race In the colors ot J. B. Haggin this year, lias a two-year-old fllly in his charge, the career of which will tie watched wltn considerable Interest by all horsemen. This IB a bay miss named Russian Sable, by Order--Victorlne. A JEew years back, wlren the mighty Hamburg was at his best, a colt bred on exactly tho same lines as this fllly was greatest rival.

Ornament was the colt, and not a few horsemen believe that when James Kowe, who handled him as a four-year- old, suggested a match race between Ornament and Hamburg, the latter's trainer, William Lakeland, vetoed the proposition because he felt doubtful about the outcome. said he wanted the "two horses to meet In some stake for ioth were eligible, but the of supremacy was never adequately answered. Because she Is a full sistei of Ornament, the namB of Russian gable appears likely to figure In some big races in the next few years. She Is not of the same color- as Ornament, nor is her conformation equal to his, but she Is a fine, upstanding Blly that should make a race mare when she fills out. In her yearline trial last fall Russian Sable turned off a quarter mile In 241-4 seconds without Tjeine pressed, and hec way of going was reminiscent ol Ornament when he was a youngster.

She has wintered well, and Is -well engagedi In stakes to be run during tbe coming season. Another young filly in the Llttlefleld stnng from which good races Are expected is Bleachers, a daughter of Klnley Mack and Gargo. Bleachers Is bred to run fast and far. Klnley Mack was one of the greatest racers of his time, and Gargo. an imported mare, performed with credit in the Hearst colors some years bacK.

Bleachers is a handsome black auia built -on racy lines that seem to spell success when she is considered ready to wear silks. At this time of the year, with no public performances ana very little training work on which to base an opinion, the probable merits of the coming season's two-year-olds can be estimated only from their breeding lines and their appearance. If all relatives of great horses could be depended upon to develop Into great racers, the sport would be simpllfled Immeasurably, for "it would be only necessary to secure the well-bred ones in order to insure the winning of purses and stakes. Lfke all other features of, the racing game, however, buying of yearlings Is a'gamble. Mot Infrequently the J500 runner gallops oft with the juvenile -stake that In the order of things jseemed a certainty for the $10,000 beauty for whose possession half a dozen millionaires may have been bidders at the yearling sale.

One of the worst disappointments ever raced In America was Frankfort, a full brother to the famous Hamburg, the greatest racer of his day, and one of the greatest sires in the country at the present time. Frankfort was considered an extremely valuable yearling, and expected to repeat some of the triumphs of his famous brother, but he retired in disgrace as -a, five-year-old a selling plater of the lowest class. He Is proving, however, something of I a success as a sire In the ownership 'of John Madden. This is one case out of a great number that might be cited. 1 TALES TRAIHISTG CAMPS.
