West Memphis begins cleanup from Monday's killer tornado WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) A dusk-to-dawn curfew was in effect today throughout this Mississippi River city as residents and emergency workers cleared rubble left by a killer tornado. Authorities say the twister that hit West Memphis late Monday killed six people, injured 237 and displaced 1,500.
The damage could go as high as $35 million, Mayor Keith Ingram said late Tuesday. "We have had a number of large businesses along the interstate that have been destroyed," Ingram said, adding that he imposed the curfew mainly because power outages left residents vulnerable to crime. Gov. Bill Clinton sent extra state troopers, and 41 National on 033AL PCCE Guard soldiers were assigned to help patrol. The twister cut a swath up to 3 miles long and 2 blocks wide, Ingram said.
An elementary school, 35 businesses, 100 homes and a 200-unit apartment com-. plex were destroyed or severely damaged in the town of 28,000, across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tenn. Workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency were expected to open an office Friday to process applications for low-interest Small Business Administration loans, cash grants of up to $5,000 and rent subsidies for displaced families, the mayor said.
