Capital Journal, Salem, Sept. 7, 1972, Sec. 3, Page 23 time is here: Prep teams ope Friday battl but many qusetion marks in other spots. The Viks' oppo- nent Friday, Parkrose, was an 8-1 team in the Metro League last season. McMinnvilie, a state semi- finalist last fall, comes back loaded with returnees and should be a Coast-Valley League power.

But Central, 8-1 last season, should also be one of the top teams in northern Oregon. In other local leagues, Gladstone (Capital), Yamhill-Carlton (Yawama), Santiam (Tri-River) and Detroit (Casco) will try to defend their titles. Glad- stone, state AA champion, returns 23 letfermen, includ- ing nine defensive starters and sprint champion Kurt Rhomberg. ley League clubs will jump off the deep end straight away. League clashes will have Sprague at McNary, Lebanon at South Salem, West Albany at Corvallis and Crescent Valley at South Albany.

North Salem will travel to Parkrose for a non-counter. In the Valley League, prognosticators have talked a big game already for Lebanon, last year's last-place team but one which has a lot of size coming back. The league should be much more balanced this year than last, and anything could happen. A look at Sprague and South Salem last week, when they played an early pre-season game, showed that those two clubs have more talent than people had given them credit for. No one is willing to call them contenders, but they could be full of surprises.

McNary, 5-4 last year, has plenty of returning players but few of them were personnel last time around. Cliff Saxton drew off an excellent sophomore team of 1971, however. Always-sound North Salem, after an off-year last fall, looks forward to some returning backfield talent By MARC FAULCONER Capita) Journal Sports Writer Ready or not, another high school football season is here. And Friday night, we'll find out who's ready and who's not. Studstill, who averaged 41.4 yards per punt last season, will be used solely as a punter by New England. He spent seven seasons with Detroit and the last four with the Rams.

Mike Mercer, a 10-year pro veteran who came out of retirement as a real estate agent to attempt a comeback with the Oakland Raiders, has one more exhibition game left to prove his ability. He averaged 36.5 yards on six punts against San Francisco last Sunday. Mercer didn't play last season but played on six teams from 1961-1970. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints placed nine players on waivers, including 1971 No. 2 draft pick Sam Holden of Grambling, and the Atlanta Falcons traded running back Jim "Cannon-ball" Butler to the Philadelphia Eagles for running back Tony Baker.

Clark, whose unerring performance in clutch situations played a major role in Dallas' surviving the playoffs and playing in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, was picked up on Cowboy waivers Wednesday by the Buffalo Bills. His departure means Austrian Toni Fritsch, a soccer-style kicker in his second year of football, becomes the No.l placekicker for the National Football League champions. Fritsch is the second youngster to push aside a veteran. Dallas dealt four-year veteran punter Ron Widby to the Green Bay Packers and replaced him with rookie Marv Bate-man.

Clark, a 10-year veteran, booted two field goals against Cleveland two years ago in the playoffs and priv-ided Dallas with a 6-2 triumph. The Cowboys had defeated Detroit 5-0 in the first playoff game of that season on a Clark field goal and a safety. In other pro football trans 308 Cal. (AP) Olympic swimming hero Mark Spitz says he is pleased the Games have resumed in the wake of the terrorist attack that left 11 members of the Israeli team dead. Olympic competition may take on new meaning now, he added. The big inning was highlighted by a grand slam home run by Mike Anderson.

Spitz, an American Jew, was cloaked in protective security from the time the Arab guerrilla attack took place until he arried home, but he said there had been no threats against him personally.

He said the Olympics would have become "a political thing" if they had been canceled because of the "And this is one thing we try to get away from," he said. He added, "I'm not concerned with the glory of my medals right now." "I'm more concerned that the games continue and that the people are maybe a little more considerate of not letting this happen again. "I think even more so now that the Games should go on and that a gold medal, or a silver, or a bronze, or just actual competition in the Olympics should mean a lot more." An estimated 500 persons, including a large number of squealing teen-age girls, turned out to welcome Spitz on his arrival at Sacramento airport, where he held a news conference.
