Wrought iron parts of a ship's steering mechanism and scrapings from brass parts of a ship's wheel and the barrel of an old pistol found near these wrecks have been labeled 17th Century vintage by experts. A coin dated in the 1600's would be one more proof, Miss Du Rand said. PIRATE VILLAGE has an exclusive state exploration permit on nine square miles of the ocean directly offshore from the beach where the whales died. yesterday. "If it's worth more, I'll pay more after inspection.

"I WAS TOLD one coin is dated 1618," she said. "If that's so, it will be a factor in my research involving treasure ships sunk in that area." She added that the finder would have to sign an affidavit that the coin was found on the Fort Pierce beach. Discovery of such a coin on that beach, Miss Du Rand said, would support research which indicates that a treasure fleet was wrecked during a storm in the area in 1622. THE REMAINS of two ships, which she believes may have been part of this fleet, have been located By STAN WITWEB Of Tin TlmH Staff Bulldozers digging deep trenches in which to bury more than 100 suicidal whales on the beach at Fort Pierce last week reportedly turned up more than white sand. Jeanne Du Rand, St.

Petersburg treasure hunter who has an interest in that area, says she's been told the big blades uncovered at least one and possibly more 17th Century Spanish gold coins. But who found them is a mystery. "I am going to advertise that I'll pay a minimum of $1,000 for one of those coins," Miss Du Rand said FABULOUS DEPARTMENT STORES THREE DAYS ONLY, FN. SAT. -10 A.M.

He said that not only had the study been furnished to Steyler but the district, which regulates the wells, had also informed the city several times about the effects of the pumping. "He (Steyler) has always refused to believe it previously," Twachtmann said. STEYLER said the results of the survey "depend on how you interpret them." Mayor Don Spicer called for a complete review of the city's water facilities yesterday after hearing conflicting reports about the effect pumping has on the area surrounding the wells in Pasco and Hillsborough counties. City Public Works Administrator Robert Steyler said the problem still was under study by a U.S. Geological Survey but to date no studies had shown the wells were having a harmful effect.

Steyler was questioned about the wells by Spicer during a meeting yesterday of the St. Petersburg City Council.
