ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, SUNDAY, JULY 23, 1950 PAGE FORTY-SEVEN CONFIDENT LIVING By NORMAN VINCENT PEALE Abdullah of Jordan--ln Troubled Middle East. He Is Political Titan Ease, Sure Cure for Your Worries In my capacity as a minister, I feel it is my duty to preach against worry at regular intervals. I do this because it is my job to remind people that through the power of God they may be able to overcome the difficulties of this life. And prominent among these difficulties and problems is that of worry.

From the purely physical aspect alone, we are only beginning to realize the effect of worry on our lives. For example, medical authorities are beginning to believe that worry By FRED J. ZUSY Jordan A ragged desert Bedouin climbs the steep road to a palace on a hill overlooking Amman. He strides past sturdy Circassian Guards to tell the court chamberlain he wishes to see King Abdullah. It is 6 a.

m. The king is starting his audiences for the day. The Bedouin stalks into the royal chambers. Bedouin and king embrace, kissing on the cheek in the traditional Bedouin fashion. They have never met before, but by the desert code any subject can have audience with feis ruler.

The same Abdullah goes to London and dines with the King and Queen of England, conversing with ease through an interpreter on literature, politics, philosophy. Abdullah wears a dagger in his belt, hut he can't draw It. It's soldered in it sheath. Too often in the past, he's come close to knifing a subject when his mercurial temper was aroused. A devout man he claims direct descent from Mohammed, prophet of Islam Abdullah bows to Mecca in his five-times-a-day prayers, the first around sunrise.

Every Friday he prays at the mosque. With much fanfare he led a group of Arab armies in the ill-fated 1948 war "to push the Jews into the sea." Other Arab leaders accused him, however, of conducting secret negotiations with the Jews during the fighting. They said Abdullah's famed Arab Legion pulled its punches by orders of the British, who control it. King Abdullah is the most controversial figure in the Arab may be an important factor in arthritis. A recent Mayo Clinic study of a group of middle-aged men afflicted wtih high, blood pressure, heart disease or ulcers showed worry to be present in nearly every case.

I am told that even the teeth can be affected. A psychiatrist informed me of a case where a woman's teeth had many cavities and were so loose that thev seemed I was once in a hotel where I was scheduled to speak at a dinner. The management had figured on about one thousand people and more than twelve hundred had showed up. Sitting with the manager in his office, I noticed that he was slumped down in his chair in a completely relaxed fashion. In fact, he appeared to be sitting on the back of his neck, with his feet stretched out before him and his hands dangling inertly over the arms of the chair.

He was completely at ease. The assistant manager rushed in, mopping his brow, and cried excitedly, "What are we going to do? What are we going to do?" "About what?" the manager asked quietly. "About this dinner. have two hundred more people than we expected." "Well, we've known tha for an hour or so, haven't we?" "Yes." but what are we going to do?" "We've done everything we can dn. We've set up extra tables and arranged for more food and extra service." "But what should I do next?" he demanded in agitation.

"Just sit down in that chair over there," the manager grinned. His assistant sat down on the edge of it. tense and rigid. Then the manager said, "Sit back." The man sat Tack. The manager said, "Slide down." About this time we all slid down in our chairs.

Then the manager put his feet up on the desk. "Put yours up, too. Bill. Both of us followed his advice and there wm sat. The point was that everything was ar-ranged and there was nothing to do, sn why worry about it and get into a lather of excitement.

Easy does it. That dinner went off fine. For when you have done everything you can, what more can you do? What may seem a pious Bible text is practical advice. Once God dominates your mind and heart, you become mentally peaceful and you can do things in an easy and relaxed fashion. Thi dissipates worry, for it thrives on tension.

You need not be a victim of worry and the illnesses it brings. Seek the Lord and leave your worries with Him. Do the best you can and He will do the rest. Acquire a sense of His continual presence with you, guiding you and leading you on your way. Write these words in your heart and you will find a sure cure for your worries: "I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears." (Copyright 1950.

Those who have played with him say he is expert and generally wins, sometimes exercising royal prerogatives to do so. Abdullah is dignified but friendly with visitors. Newsmen usually get a cordial welcome. The king likes to see his name and picture in print. He follows the Arabic press closely and may telephone an editor to praise or reprimand him for some story.

Despite a nominal constitution and parliament, Adbullah is still a feudal monarch in most respects. Recently he ordered a number of demonstrators arrested and marched 70 miles under a hot sun to Amman. One man died. A newspaper editor, related to the dead man, was jailed for writing; abnnt it. Adbullah has called journalists to the palace and warned them he would "smash their heads in" if they didn't toe the line." He maintains a severe censorship on outgoing news.

Abdullah's fixed dream for years has been achievement of the Arab unity his father failed to achieve after the first war. This would mean uniting Jordan with Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Annexation of eastern Palestine was the first step. Abdullah has three wives. The Moslem religion permits up to four.

The latest, a black Bedouin woman who was once a palace servant, he married in the '30s. Around Amman she is called the "black market queen" for alleged dealings in smuggled goods. Amman gossip has it that she supplies the king with money. Abdullah himself is a poor man He has some holdings of land but only a small income. Prince Tallal.

Pete world. He has come close to breaking up the Arab League, the regional organization of seven Arab states. King Farouk of Egspt and King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia frankly detest him. Yet Abdullah sometimes is hailed as tbe most stabilizing factor in the chaotic, strategic, oil rh-h Middle East. American and British diplomats say hp is the only Arab leader who's had the common sense to realize that Israel Is in the Middle East to stay.

He is willing- to talk permanent peace. The other Arabs won't. The colorful Abdullah reigns over a territory of less than 40.000 square miles, chiefly desert. Boundaries are vague. Maj.

Gen. Bagot Glubb (Glubb Pasha) the British officer who heads Abdullah's Arab Legion and, behind the scenes, wields great influence, once described the nation as "wild and unwanted territory." An American author termed it "a vagrant kingdom without visible means of support." Jordan recently was enlarged through annexation of eastern Palestine, including the Biblical cities of old walled Jerusalem. Jericho and Bethlehem. This more than doubled the number of Abdullah's subjects. They now number more than a million, including more than 500.000 Palestine refugees whose homes and farms are now held by Israel.

Most refugees are penniless. Abdullah was born in Mecca. Feb. 26. 1882.

He is the son of the late Sharif Hussein, then ruler of the territory including Mecca and Medina, holy cities of Islam. Hussein and his family were called to Istanbul by the Turks in because of Turkish sus picions of Hussein's intentions toward his satrapy. The family lived in Turkey for more than 15 years. Abdullah, a bright young man, received a Turkish education. He even became a member of the Turkish parliament.

At the end of their enforced exile, Hussein and his sons returned to Mecca. They played a big part in the Arab nationalist movement before the first war. Abdullah was emissary and foreign minister for his father in missions which resulted in the McMahon correspondence. These letters from Sir Henry McMahon, representing Britain, 2.000 Ibi. 4,000 Ihi.

st you: coif you: t-rmago SI 38.00 about to fall out. Her dentist PEALE could do nothing for her and sent her to him. He discovered that, because of worry, she had been grinding her teeth in her sleep, thus loosening them and causing the cavities. Many of us can be healthier when we learn to free ourselves from the ever-present malady of worry. And how do you do that? I can give you some good medicine for worry in the form of a Bible text that will cure you of your worry if you will take it regularly.

Put it in your mind. Let it seep down through your thoughts. Make it a part of you. This is it: sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." The meaning of this text is crystal clear. If you really seek God.

that is, think about Him. pray to Him. live with Him in your mind until He becomes not a dim concept, but a real fact, your worries will gradually but surely leave you. So, instead of thinking about something that has been worrying you, deliberately practice turning your thoughts to God. Take your mind off your problem and fix it on God.

When yon do this, it tends to put you in a more relaxed state. Worry causes tension and gets you in a dither. So, in "seeking the Lord say to yourself: "Goil is now giving me peace in my mind. His peace is filling my whole life. I will do the best I can about this problem and, when I have done that, there is nothing else I can do.

I will simply leave it to the Lord from there on and He will fake care of the matter." This will free your powers and give yon a quiet confidence. KING ABDULLAH were interpreted by the Arabs as a promise that all of Palestine, including what now is Israel, would go to the Arabs. The Balfour Declaration, which followed later, contradicted this. Abdullah and his brother, Faisal, joined Lawrence of Arabia in the World War I anti-Turk "revolt in the des-ert." After the war the British made Faisal Kingr of Syria in partial fulfillment of their pledges. The French kicked out Faisal in 1920.

Abdullah raised an army and proceeded from Mecca toward Damascus, determined to seek revenge. He got as far as Amman. Winston Churchill persuaded Abdullah to give up his aggressive intentions against the French and become ruler of a new territory carved out of Palestine and called Trans-Jordan. Churchill promised British protection and financial aid. This protection and help has continued to this day.

Other Arab rulers say. with some foundation in fact, it has made Abdullah a British puppet. The British have complete control over the Arab Legion. They meet a good half of Jordan's annual budget of S15.000.000. Faisal, with British help, later became King of Iraq.

His grandson, also named Faisal, is now Iraq's boy king. Iraq has been and remains Abdullah's best Arab friend. Abdullah twice was soundly defeated by Ibn Saud in desert battles. The first time was 1919. after Abdullah's father Deirou I4U.40 200.80 Cleveland 138.00 256.00 Washington.
