City in Lowest Brackets in Fire Loss in Virginia Staunton has never entered the annual clean-up and fire prevention campaigns sponsored by the National Fire Protection associa tion, Fire Chief E. H. Dabney said yesterday; but this city has al ways been in the lowest brackets of fire loss among Virginia muni clpalities, he added.

Furthermore, the state's fire in spectors have each year for the past eight or ten rated Staunton as the 'cleanest city in Virginia," i Chief Dabney said. He explained this rating had been given after four inspections per year. The fire chief said barring another consequental fire, Staun ton's 1938 fire loss would be considerably under $5,000. Last year, it was about this amount, he stated. Asked why the city had never entered the national contest, Chief Dabney said there was no reason.

"We just' have always handled our own fire prevention and cleanup campaigns," he asserted. A recent survey by the National Fire Protection association showed Roanoke had topped the state for three consecutive years, and that Waynesboro had been given honorable mention. The survey placed Newport News in second position for' 1938. Nor folk was also given an honorable mention position. FIREMEN GRATEFUL -Fire Clllei E.
