By FRED DANZIG IF FLORENCE HENDERSON lived In the fabled days of olde, she would have been the sort of girl who inspired knights to be bold. A blue-eyed blonde with a peaches-and-cream complexion, warm smile and dainty figure. Miss Henderson even inspires 20th Century men to lend her a helping hand. One of her gallant helpers was President Eisenhower.

-A FEW YEARS AGO," Miss Henderson recalled. I was asked to sing the 'Star Spangled Banner' at an editors meeting that Mr. Eisenhower attended. Before the program began, I was introduced to the President and I told him how worried I was about forgetting the words. Al performers have that fear, you know.

'Don't worry, he said. 'If you get stuck, TU, prompt you. Starting March 26, Miss Henderson will have to rely, not on Presidential prompting if she gets stuck (she never does, really) but on TV cue cards. She and her partner in song-and-dance, Bill Hayes, will launch Channel 8's newest weekly show, "The Music Theatre" on Thursdays, sponsored by the automobile firm (Olsmobile) that has had the Henderson-Hayes combination under contract for nearly two years. The contract requires Hayes and Miss Henderson to represent the sponsor at dealer meetings, industrial shows, TV commercials and TV shows.

"It's a very attractive contract. They also let us do things not connected with selling cars like singing in supper clubs. And they even give us free cars," said Miss Henderson. Yes, she and Hayes are married. But no, they're not married to each other.

"People always ask if we're married," she said. "Sometimes, we just let them think we are rather than get into long expla- nations." The half-hour show, live from New York as they say, promises to be an interesting one. "We'll be the host and hostess for each one and some weeks we'll perform, either together or individually. Most of the time, well have special guests who will appear in an original play that has well-known songs integrated into the action," Miss Henderson said. The new series will open with Jackie Cooper and Genevieve, the French singing comedienne, in a musical story by John Vlahos called "A Nice Place to Hide." Such songs as "All By Myself," "Day by Day" and "People Will Say We're in Love," employing the lyrics as originally written by the composers, will be integrated into the stories.

MISS HENDERSON, born on St. Valentine's Day in Dale, 25 years ago is the last year I tell my age," she says), was the youngest of 10 Henderson children. The family moved to Rockport, and Owensboro, while she was a youngster and already showing ability as a singer. She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York from the fall of 1951 until the summer of 1952 and began her Broadway career in 1952 as a chorus girl in "Wish You Were Here." This was followed by two years of touring with the National Company of 'Oklahoma!" in which she played the part of Laurey.
