THE HILLSDALE DAILY NEWS, Tuesday, October 2, 1973 3 Hilisdaie Woman's Club Entertained By Gundella Gundella Club witch as was her grandmother and several aunts etc. She explained the aura surrounding witches by dispelling many myths. For instance, she said the cauldrons usually associated with witches were logical as they were the doctors of the early days and they mixed up the remedies in large pots. "Many of your grandmothers did the same thing." As for the flowing black robes, "As late as 200 years ago, a person could be put to death for studying witchcraft, so covens (a group of 2 to 13 people) met at night and those attending wore black to avoid being seen." The brooms were not for flying. "A witch uses a wand sometimes and the tools of the trade couldn't be left lying around so they were concealed in the homemade brooms with the handle protruding and the end of the wand covered with broom straw.

These, of course were carried to the coven meetings." "It's all very logical. It's when one doesn't understand something that it is feared. Take for example, if you approach a door and it opens by itself; you feel a chill of cold air; and you hear voices and you don't know where they are coming from; You: are in a supermarket; the automatic door opened for you, the air-conditioning was on, and a clerk was announcing the specials for the day. It's all very logical. However, in years past, one could be frightened and not understand what was happening.

The secret is to understand yourself, your problems and those around As she continued, it became very apparent that Gundella The Witch could give up her trade any day and go to work for Dale Carnegie or the Dow Leadership Seminars. She was simply repeating a tried and true recipe for projecting one's personality by first believing in oneself. She said, "Witches believe in a universal source of power from which we all come; we believe in reincarnation; and we believe in natural magic not anything superyou understand, but the magical powers we all are given. We believe in anything that works that science can't explain and if you think about it, there are lots of things that fall into this category." Gundella feels the power of suggestion, belief and attitude all fall under the guise of witchcraft. "What you expect is what you can get.

With deep emotion, imagination and lots of faith and belief, you can conjure up your own 'spells' and make things happen for your benefit." While she didn't say anything new exactly, she strongly moved the audience to test its own powers, which is what a selfmotivation instructor would do. Her attitude is that you can do anything you want to if you try hard enough. She is a learned student of several religions, and of history and the progression of witchcraft. Her delivery and honest belief in her subject proved delightful, and she did what she came to do entertain. Following the program, she answered questions from the members who had, by that time relaxed in the presence of a real witch, and accepted her philisophical suggestions for improving themselves.

The next meeting of the Woman's Club will be Oct. 22 at the First United Presbyterian Church, Hinkle Lounge. The program will be a panel discussion, "Shall the City of Hillsdale Build a New Middle School?" Courtesy The Fry Agency Hunter Dies After Fall By GENEVA GATES The Hillsdale Woman's Club opened the current meeting year with its annual Guest Day, and a most enlightening program. The president, Mrs. Frank Leutheuser, opened the afternoon meeting at the Dow Leadership Center at. Hillsdale College, and Mrs. John Catenhusen gave the invocation.

The tables were decorated with colorful arrangements of yellow spider mums and white and yellow field flowers. Name cards at the speaker's table were handlettered by Mrs. Catenhusen. The social committee for the dav included Dwight Shaneour and Mrs. Michael Kolivosky, co-chairmen, with Mrs.

William R. Hill and Mrs. William MacRitchie. Program co-chairmen were Mrs. Kenneth G.

Prettie and Mrs. Catenhusen. Following the salad luncheon, Mrs. Prettie introduced the speaker for the afternoon, "Gundella The Witch." Gundella is often referred to as "Detroit's Witch" as she lives, with her husband and four children, in Garden City near Detroit. She is a well-known authority on witchcraft and appears often on Detroit television, as well as holding instructional programs on various facets of psychic powers and related subjects.

She is a stout smiling lady whose voice booms across the room much as a teacher, which she was for 22 years. Around her a neck she wore a large brass spider, with a real spider encased in the clear lucite center section. She explained that this was a good luck charm, much as a rabbit's foot would be for most. She opened her talk to an audience with raised eyebrows and half-smiles. and she reassured the skeptics that she had no pact with the devil; that she believed in the Christian doctrine; and that she didn't go around casting evil spells and flying through the air on a broom.

After all, I'm a good 100 pounds overweight and I've yet to see the broom I'd trust," she said goodnaturedly. Gundella claims to be a witch descended from the Green Witches of the fourteenth century in Scotland.
