Mr. Puckett, 69, died Sept 6 in Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie. He was serving as a Grant County commissioner and seeking re-election this fall. Mr. Puckett was appointed a county commissioner in 1993 after the death of incumbent Ray Hickam.

He was reelected in 1994. Mr. Puckett also had served 17 years on the Upland Town Council. The longtime Upland resident worked for Star Financial Bank for three decades. MARGARET BUTCHER PORTER, 82, Indianapolis, died Sept.

She taught in Mace, for three years, then at Central Elementary School in Lebanon, where she also served as principal. She retired in 1969 after a 45-year career. Mrs. Smiley was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma so- rority and Riley Hospital for Children Cheer Guild. She was a graduate of Madame Blaker's Teachers College.

She worked in phone sales 10 years for L.S. Ayres Co. Downtown, retiring in 1977. She was a member of West Washington Street United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star. Services: 1 p.m.

She was the widow of Blackburn board of governors for the United Way and the board of the Indianapolis Speech and Hearing Center. He also was on the Doard of directors for the Wright Institute of Otology, the Society of Retired Executives, the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center and the Community Service Council. Mr. Roesch was past president of Indianapolis Rotary Club Foundation and was named by the Rotary as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the St.

Pius Council of the Knights of Columbus and had been named a Kentucky Colonel. A 1932 graduate of Purdue University, he was a past director of the Purdue Gold Coat Club and the university's President's Council. Mr. Roesch was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Army Reserves in 1969. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was the widower of D. HI I i MARTINSVILLE, Ind. Services for William H. Thomas, 94, Martinsville, a former mayor, were SepL 6 in New South Park Cemetery. He died Sept 3.

Mr. Thomas served as mayor of Martinsville from 1947 to 1952. During his tenure, land for the city park was purchased; a fund was started for a public svrfmming pool; trash collection was established; and parking meters were installed. He also operated a sawmill near Mooresvllle. Mr.

Mr. Dunn was a member of Russell-ville Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine and a graduate of Butler University.

Among his many commendations were the Distinguished Service Cross and the Legion of Merit Medal. After retiring from the Army, he was appointed to the Senior Executive Service by President Clinton.

Mr. Roesch died Sept. 6. He joined Hook Drugs in 1926 and became a member of the board of directors in 1938. He retired in 1974 but remained on the board until 1983.

A member of the board of directors of the Crossroads of America Council of the Boy Scouts, Mr. Roesch was conferred the Silver Beaver Award in 1986. The Indianapolis headquarters of the Scout Service Center was named in his honor in 1989. Mr. Roesch also served on the board of overseers for St.

Meinrad College and School of Theology, the MARY ANN CARTER AARRESTAD, 87, Carmel, formerly of Indianapolis, died Sept. 6. She had been a clerk for Ryan Auto Parts. She was a member of the Cumberland chapter of Order of the Eastern Star. Services: 2 p.m.
