SCHOOL CENSUS WORK STARTING Children Between 5 and 20 Being Counted By Canvassers Compiling of the annual school census of Escanaba public schools was begun yesterday by three canvassers under the direction of Miss Wallace. Carrion contacting every home in the city are Gerald Carlton. Jon Banks and Roland Priem. Information is being sought on all children between the ages of five and 20. regardless of whether or not they attend school.

The general public is asked to cooperwith Miss Wallace and her assistants. It is of vital importance that all children between five and 20 be registered because school funds state primary fund are allocated on the basis of the census. Rapid River Martin-Johnson Rapid River. Miss Jean Martin. daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Henry Martin. and Woodrow Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John 0.

Johnson. both of Rapid River. were united in marriage at the St. Charles church parsonage here 10 o'clock Saturday ing. Rev.

Fr. Francis Scheringer performed the ceremony. The couple was attended by Miss Gloria Haefs. Perkins, close friend of the bride. and Keith Johnson.

River. brother of bridegroom. The bride wore a powder blue suit. with navy accessories. and the bridesmaid was attired in i suit of dusty pink, with rust accessories.

A wedding breakfast was served to immediate relatives at the bride's home. Attending from outof -town were Mrs. Joseph Gingrass of Escanaba and Mrs. Sam Belanger of Gladstone. The couple will reside in Rapid River, where Mr.

Johnson is employed with the Anderson Brothers Lumber company. Personals Mrs. William Rice, Mrs. Loyal Larsen, Mrs. Charles Turan and Mrs.

Henry Martin of Rapid River were visitors in Escanaba Monday. Large Sturgeon Is Caught Alive Watervliet. Mich. -A 125-pound sturgeon was taken alive here recently in the Paw Paw river just below the Watervliet Paper company dam. Much attention was attracted by fish as it cruised about in the water below the dam and a crowd estimated at more than 200 persons gathered on the banks of the stream.

It was the first fish of its species seen in the area for more than 25 years. H. L. Thompson of the Benton Harbor state fish hatchery and Severns Balch of the Watervliet Paper company took the huge fish from the water. carried in wet blanket to specially constructed tank for fish transportation and took it to the Benton Harbor hatchery.

It was later transferred to the Wolf Lake state fish hatchery near Paw Paw where it will be on exhibition in one of the hatchery pools. The fish was first sighted by 14 year old boy who attempted to lasso it but failed In an exhausted condition when taken. the fish was believed to have swum up the river from Lake Michigan to spawn. covering the distance of more than 25 miles against the current. Thompson estimated the fish was at least 40 years old.

May 8. Five guilty and 10 not guilty pleas were heard by Judge Frank A. Bell of Negaunce in A revien of the court calendar at the opening today for the May term of Merominee county circuit court. The court term is expected to continue this week and may run over into next week. court attaches said.

Pleading guilty were Roy Maves. Oliver Rabey and Omar Norman. Hermansville young men charged with driving away a car owned by William Strohl of Daggett on April 9. and Julius FeathIndian of Harris township. held on a paternity charge.

Sentence Later This Week Sentences will be imposed by the court later this week. The three Hermansville men are held in jail in default of $500 bond each: and Feathers 18 in jail in default of a $1.000 bond. Pleading not guilty and acheduled for jury trial were: Malcolm Forsberg. Alfred Chatlosh. John Walz and Louis Chatlosh.

charged with rape of 13-year-old Indian girl of Harris township, pleaded not guilty. Deragon is held in jail in default of $1.500 bond. George Jones, at liberty under bond on a paternity charge, pleaded not guilty. Schmidt Not Guilty Arnold Schmidt, 22, of Menominee. driver of a car that struck and fatally injured Lloyd LaFleur.

17. of Menominee, on the interstate bridge on April pleaded not guilty. He is at liberty under $2.000 bail bond. Roy Mathison, 29, of Marinette, charged with forgery of three checks, stood mute when arraigned and the court entered not guilty plea for him. Without counsel, the court named Atty Thurman R.

Doyle to represent him. Mathison is held in jail in default of $5.000 bond. Gordon E. Mylander of Escanaba, charged with obtaining property valued at $60 from Louis Sheevy of Stephenson under false pretenses, pleaded not guilty. Mylander is at liberty under bond.

No tax sale had been beld from 1932 to 1938. Tax Commission Members Confer Munising. May 5-The annual organization meeting of the Alger county tax commission held today in the courthouse here. Mrs. J.

Vera Peterson. county school commissioner; J. LaFave, county treasurer: Frank Coaster of Limestone, chairman of the finance committee of the board of supervisors; Oscar E. Ole and Wallace H. Masters, are the members of the commission.

The commission set a date for making tentative allocations on the 1939 15-mill tax assessment. Permanent allocation of the assesament will be made in July. Denman Elected Grand Knight of Munising K. Of C. Munising, "May 8-R.

A. Denman was elected grand knight of the Munising council, Knights of Columbus. at the organization meeting of the group held on Friday evening. Leo A. Fleury, district deputy of the Knights of Columbus, Marquette, was in charge of the installation of officers.

Regular meetings lodge then will be held on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
