Vaudeville is a lot better than nothing, and the attractions of this kind here are certainly well worth the price charged. But there is such a thing as too much of a thing. A COCXTV TAX OFFICE. The right of the County Board of Taxation to dismiss Secretary W. A.

Spencer and install Mr. J. Edward Harned In his place, simply involves an interpretation of the none too well understood Civil Service act. Unless Mr. Spencer came within the provisions of that act, there was no reason why the Board should not make a change if it saw fit, but If he was 60 protected, the form of dismissal provided by the act, should have been followed in making the change, If there was any reason for discharging him.

But Concerning the other part of the Board's action of yesterday, there, can be no two opinions. The establishment of a regular county tax office, with a secretary on duty six hours a day for five days a week, is something that should have been done long ago. Heretofore we have had a county tax board, but no county tax records where anyone could get at them on short notice. With the secretary at a stated place during reasonable stated hours, these records will be the property of every one who has the right to use them, and anyone desiring other information about the Board or its doings, will have an equally good chance to get it. The Tax Board is certainly to be commended upon making this rule.

TRENTON. March 10. A hill mnv be introduied in the Legislature providing for the abolition of the State Board Of Health, as now rntistlfiitixl and the substitution in its place of a commissioner of public health. The fatherB of the proposed bill have not yet decided whether there should be an advisory board of five members to work with the commissioner or whether he should have entire charge ol me maiier or public health. mere is said to be considerable dissatisfaction with the health board's present methods, whirh prevailed for a long time, although nothinsr is held aealnst th of the body.

FREDERICK GOWEN Manager a tj'mlj ttp ti tanvr a naatrKr ICdttor F. W. ARNOLD Newi Editor have to be high er in New York to keep Harry Thaw locked up, hut everyone will feel that It's worth the money. As only one out of ten in the new Cabinet wears whiskers, it would seem that soma enterprising chap might sell some safety razors if he would happen around at a Cabinet meeting. Considerable disappointment Is that Gen.

Rosalie Jones, head of the hikers, did not go into the President's Cabinet, as Secretary, of War, Newspaper editors should reflect I in time this year that it is not appropriate to classify millinery notes under the head of. lister observ-, onces. Vice-President Marshall says he Is going to enter on a "four-year silence," hut probably the senators will at least let him entertain a motion, to adjourn. Senator Ramsay In having a committee named to ascertain why the New Jersey troops at the inauguration appeared in such shabby unl- forms, voices the feeling of the whole State. It was disgraceful, that he-cause of an ill timed parsimony, the militia of the President's own commonwealth should make the most wretched appearance of any of the marching bodies.

The attention of the Home News has been called to the fact that the Publlo Service Corporation Tetalns articles lost on its cars and when they are not called for within a certain time, returns them to the finders This is all right so far as it goes, but why not advertise the articles, as New York's transit lines The cost would be small and the public would certainly appreciate this consideration. Thare are said to be several poekethooks containing money, for instance, right now at the local office of the Public Service Company that may never find their way to their owners, though a little want advertisement might locate them. THE NEW WATER BOARD. No fault can he found with the i personnel of the new Board of Wa- ter Commissioners named by Common Council last night. Only rabid i partisanship can excUBe'the summary dismissal of their predecessors, hut that Job having been completed, the Aldermen atonedi to a degree by picking representative citizens and I business men to fill the vacancies, i The business of the Board will be car-' ried on according to the excellent standards maintained by previous commissioners, honestly and efficiently.

But If the new members wish to avoid technical violations of all the myriads of statutes concerning municipal bodies that have been shovelled into the law hooks in the last century they bad better hire about all the lawyers in the State to steer them straight. And if they don't, the next change of city administration will I trump np "charges against them, as pore as fate." OOt AMUSEMENTS. New Brunswick's theatregoers nrill surely not be sorry to learn that Who vaudeville season here will soon (come to an end. Of course, the man- lerement of the Opera House can not pa blamed for the shows that have fbeen offered. They have their own for the policy hafr has been pursued.

At the same time the fact remains that the theatrical attractions presented for the past few seasons have been very unsatisfactory in that there, has not been in them any way near enough of the sort of entertainment that Is serious and that tends to uplift. Too much of the light, frothy, sort- of entertainment has been offered. 7, We do not think that New Brunswick; people are very keen about vaudeville, especially after being surfeited with it, as we have been. But the reason that the Jocal theatrical management does not offer us attractions other than vaudeville more often. Is that the vaudeville people have to be paid Just the same for any period of Idleness that the bringing lere of other attractions would ause, and there Is not enough money (in the dramatic, operatic, or musical 'comedy offerings to make it pay them bring them here under such conditions.

At the same time, there Is nothing to prevent any of the clubs or fraternities of (thlB city frorn putting attractions on here whenever they l8WS JWiey -might not make any "IS five c.uATr, Tnhn TTaVflti nf the Great Council of Red Men, of the Sfgtp of Xfvr Jprspv vrhn wan Pitt ed tn tha rffipA nn PrMnv ha.q an nounced the following appointments ror the year: Great wignap, John A.
