Following a minor operation and an a result of the extreme heat that prevailed, Mrs. Frank E. Valentine, formerly MI bb Hester Yockey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.

H. Yockey of thin city away at Springfield, 111., late on Saturday night. Because of the trivial nature of the operation not any of the members of her family were notified and the announcement of her death has come as a fearful shock not only to her parents, brothers and sister, but to a host of people throughout the city. The body wan brought to Esc an aba yesterday morning and was taken to the home of the parents on Campbell street. At 11 this morning at St.

Patrick's church, funeral services will be conducted over the body. Key. Fr. Barth officiating. Interment will be at St.

cemetery. Mrs. Valentine had been ill for a few days at her home at Springfield when a physician was called. It was found fbat it was necessary to periorm a minor operation. Mr.

Valentine was advised against calling the members of her family as it was considered that the operation was of such minor importance that she would be returned to her home from the hospital in a few hours fully recovered. When the operation was performed on Saturday the heat In Springfield registered at over 100 degrees. The anaesthetic and the heat combined seriously affected the heart action of the patient, but she appeared to have fully recovered from the operation when Mr. Valentine left the hospital at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon and with the physicians assuring him that there was no need for worry. Mr.

Valentine returned to his home, and returned to the hospital at 6:30 to learn that the heat had had a most distressing effect on his wife but the physicians offered every hope of complete recovery. Every possible (Continued on page Eight) Theophile Baillargeon, driving a rig from the Richer stable in this city was struck by an automobile driven by Henry Sauers, on the Ford River Switch road yesterday and thrown Into the ditch. The buggy was wrecked with one wheel being demolished, two springs broken; the reach cracked off and the whole turned over Into the ditch. Mr. Baillargeon was thrown out but escaped without injury.

Merchants and manufacturers of this and other cities of the county were busy throughout the day completing the work on elaborate booths and displays at the fair and when the fair is opened this morning all of the industrial exhibits will be ady for the people. Many of the booths arc most elaborate and are permanent affairs that will stand for a number of years as a monument to the industry of those arranging them.

Hews, iwhile the household effects of the family were being moved to a new location, left the city last night without having Bolved the mystery.

The detective searched out every poosible clue and met only with disappointment at the end of each trail, being wholly unable to account of the unusual disappearance of the jewels. Garland, St. star pitcher who twirled a tight game against Gladstone Saturday, attempted to play the role with disastrous effects on Sunday when Gladstone copped the final game of the Upper Peninsula-Wisconsln league schedule 16 to 3. Jimmie Smith, the local speed demon, w-ho was scheduled to pitch the game, failed to show up and Garland was forced into the game for mound duty. He was pounded heavily and finally gave way to Eddie Him, wrho held Gladstone hitless for remain der of the game.

Kovisgo, postmaster at Palmer was brought before the United States court this morning and arraigned on a charge of alleged shortage of funds at that post office He pleaded not guilty. He will be tried next week. Kovisgo Is very well known in Marquette having lived here formerly. He conducted a store on Washington street where John Lam ml is now in business. KoviBgo conducts a general store at Palmer in which the post- office is located.

C.R. WILLIAMS BREAKS HIS HAND In alighting from a street car at Ludington and Charlotte street yester day, C. R. Williams fell to the pave ment and sustained a fracture of one of bones of his right hand. 1 stepping from the car Mr.

Williams caught his heel on the step and fel forward. He put out his hand break the fall and one of the bones a the outside of the hand was snapped off. Supt. C. E. Andrews of the Peninsula division of the North-Western, has been advised ihat the North Western Railway company, has been awarded an unusual honor at the International Exposition of Hygene at Dresden. The exhibit arranged by the system at the exposition has been made a part of the permanent collection in the Berlin museum of safety, thus giving an unusual honor to the company which was he only foreign exhibitor at the exposit Ion.

IS PREDICTED Fair weather is predicted for the opening day of the county tair. Of general weather conditions Observer V. E. Jakl says: The high pressure area noted as approaching from the Northwest Saturday morning, now covers all portions of the country except the Atlan tic states, and a general fall in temperature has attended its movement south aud east. The coolest weather is reported from the Canadian Northwest and the middle and upper Rocky Mountain and Plains states, where light to heavy frosts and freezing tem peintures occurred last night.

Light rains fell since yesterday morning over a large area extending from the upper Mississippi Valley east to the coast; but over the south and west the weather was generally fair. Fair weather, with light variable winds Is indicated for this vicinity tonight and Tuesday. It will be cooler tonight, with conditions favoaable for light frost.
