rlt for NK.X The common cold is ihe most universal disease of all. The average person has between two and three colds a year. Despite the recurrence of the experience. he is likely to! look upon each; episode as a brand new menon and wonder at his symptoms, i while hunting about in a new 1 direction for some remedy or relief. A is an infection in the nose, nasal larynx, or bron- chii, and is capable of involving the whole respiratory tract.

Its cause not yet determined, but there is increasing evidence that it is due to a virus. There no known way to prevent a cold. Vaccines, gargles, sprays, diet, and hundreds of other techniques have been tried ovei and over, without avail The mere fact that there are so many thousands of cures recommended for is good evidence that none is of any value. It has been said that an untreated cold lasts fourteen days, and a treated cold lasts only a fortnight and the adage is as true today as it ever was. Colds are annoying and but they are not serious.

hat can one do about a cold? It is a contagious disease and therefore the victim should try not to pass it on to others during the highly contagious period ol the first three or four davs after the onset. This means that he will prevent droplets from his own nose and mouth reaching respiratory and alimentarj tracts of those about him by covering his mouth, by not coughing carelessly. and bv meticulouslx wash ing the hands before preparing food GO TO RKH Bed rest is the best treatment for a cold It makes little or no difference what else is done. The duration and complications will be reduced to the minimum with bed rest alone. Also, regardless of other treatment, both the duration and complications will be increased in the absence of bed rest Bed rest is absolutely imperative during fever and for after fever.

All other treatment tomatical and usually harm than good. Aspirin contributes more to one's comfort than any simple drug. The duration of a cold is usually too short for the sufferer to be concerned with diet a means of treatment. It is customarily advisable. however, lo increase the intake of fluids.

A cathartic has no merit, and frequently merely contributes to the general discomfort It is almost impossible to resist the temptation to and that something too often makes matters worse It is doing nothing that brings the best results to the patient with a cold.
