DAILY EDITION Single Copy. Two Cents; One Week, Ten Cents; Three Months, 11.25; Six Month-. One fear, (5 Entered at F. O. gecond-clagg matter THE HOME NEWS GUARANTEES ITS CIRCULATION tion; Servia and Austria were at sword's point concerning the methods of holding a certain trial.

Russia did not like the attitude of Austria-Hungary. It looked like a conquest to the Great Bear, and so he decided to mobilize. Germany had one eye on England and the other on Russia, and when things got to the point of mobilization, Germany was not to be outdone. She. too, was cast in the great wur drama.

Thus we get back -in the manner of retrogressionto a any when all this trouble started. The Pandor box was opened when the Austria heir-npparant and his wife were murdered at Sarajevo. And the day upon which that incident occurred the Incident that swept, in its fury nne-hnlf of the civilized world was June 28. 1914. To our mind that's some date in history- It ought to have a mention.

It ought to be remembered. The Ides of March we have never forgotten; why treat June 28 with such cold indifference? Isn't the date to which the most disastrous calamity of the ages can be traced worthy of a place In the records? June 28, strictly speaking, marks the beginning of the world's great est fight. Alongside it all other dates save July 4 pale into Insignificance. SHARK KILLS JERSEY BATHER Attacks Philadelphia Man In Surf fit Beaoh Haven, Bench Haven. N.

July 3. Charles letting Van Sant, twenty-three, son of Dr. E. L. Van Sant of Philadelphia, was killed by a shark here.

Leaving several companions, Van Snnt swam out beyond the combers. As he was coming about to the shore onlookers from the beach and boardwalk were horrified to see the dorsal fin of a nine foot shark while it was 300 yards away. The cry of "Danger!" was carrieed to Van Sant by the life guards, who went to his assistance, Then began the race for life. Van Sant lost. The shark attacked him before being frightened away.

He was taken to the Engleside hospital, where he died. PARTY CHAIRMAN DELAY! Will Not Name Campaign Committees tntll Lata In Week. New York, July 3. Neither Vance C. McCormlck', chairman of the Democratic national committee, nor William R.

It might be a good Idea to have a lew more machine guns on hand, even If note-writing does end the Mexican fiasco temporarily.

Machine guns seem to have accomplished more for the bandits than anything else they have employed. nf omirse the Bible advises us to consider the lilies of the field, how they spin not nor toil. But some men seem to think that the advice is the sum total of tne good book. There'i no reason why we should consider the lilies to the exclusion of everything else. Only the actions of the just smell sweet and blossom in the dust.

Shirley. 1 SAFE AND SAJJE CRITICS. A misapprehension has been found to be prevalent in this city respecting the dinner given at the close of the safe and sane celebration last year, and some; people have refused to contribute this year, alleging that they had no desire to feed the committee To such critics It may be well to lay that the sum collected last year not only did not provide dinners, but would not have paid for the celebration If it ha8 not been supplemented by the Bum made by the athletic exhibition. It was the money from the athletics that gave the dinner to the contestants. The love feast of the committee was at the expense of the Mayor and In very small measure by one or two other people wishing to show their appreciation of the energetic work and zeal of those who made the exercises a success.

It Is from the remembrance of joys we have lost that the arrows of affliction are pointed. Mackenzie. CANDIDATE WITTPENN. That Naval Officer H. Otto Witt-penn, of Jersey City, will have the united support of Jersey's Democratic leaders is now firmly estab-.

llshed, and there is no gainsaying that the Republicans of the State have their work cut out for thei in the coming Gubernatorial campaign. The fact that the Democracy is able to present a united front thus early in the battle is certain to count for much In the preliminary skirmishing and may sway the tide later on. Mr. Wittpenn courts attention as a man of independent judgment, whose fearlessness as a public official has been shown in the most convincing way on several occasions. He seeks office as a business candidate a man who looks upon the Governorship as a job requiring managerial ability as well as graces that adorn social runctions, or the tent for political leadership.

The Democratic candidate is well liked in Middlesex and his friends here express unbounded confidence In his ability to apply to the administration of State affairs such modern methods of co-ordination and efficiency as would result not only in a great saving to the taxpayers, but In smoother and more satisfactory running of the complicated ma chinery. A MEMORABLE DAY. Wednesday, June 28, passed without celebration, without mention in particular, without more attention than most Wednesdays or most any June day. And yet it deserved something better than this treatment. It was an anniversary worth as we will attempt to show.

In Europe today millions of armed men move about more than one-half of that great continent in the most gigantic and most barbarous struggle of history. Roumania, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania and the smaller little domains all have their part to play. They entered when the giants of militarism had decided upon their course! got in the game some time before the minor nations and has spread her machine guns and howitzers through the passes of the lower Alps.
