2A Sunday, July 2, 2017 coloradoan.com Fort Collins Coloradoan FORT'COLLINS Coloradoan PART OF THE USA TODAY NETWORK Witness account sheds light on shooting Police pursuit, altercation with other drivers preceded death heels of another fatal officer-involved shooting on June 9, when a man reportedly fired a weapon at Loveland Police officers after a failed traffic stop. Friday night's shooting is the fourth officer-involved shooting in Larimer County since April 2016. The 8th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigators are trying to locate two potential witnesses of the shooting. Specifically, they'd like to speak to the white male and female occupants of a white Jeep Cherokee that was possibly involved in a crash near the intersection of Timberline Road and Highway 392 at about 7:30 p.m. Anyone with information about this vehicle or its occupants is asked to call the Estes Park Police Department Tip Line at quests for additional information on Saturday.

At least one sheriff's deputy began chasing the man on foot about 7:38 p.m. through a field southwest of the intersection. Frasco said the sheriff's deputy told the other man to stop chasing the suspect. About 7:42 p.m., a person can be heard over emergency radio yelling "Show us your hands! Put your hands up!" About 10 seconds later, a man's voice says "shots fired." A man then says the suspect is down on the ground and yelling. LCSO previously confirmed that an unidentified deputy fired their weapon and struck the man, who was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies.

Loveland Police confirmed on Saturday morning that the man died Friday night. The shooting comes on the the events leading up the shooting about 7:30 p.m. when he pulled up to a stop sign on Larimer County Road 9 at the intersection of Colorado Highway 392. Frasco's account of events lines up with archived police emergency radio audio describing the incident. Frasco said he looked to his left and saw two cars skidding sideways off the south side of Colorado 392.

The cars came to a stop in an embankment, and Frasco pulled over to report the possible crash to authorities. Before Frasco could approach the two male drivers of the cars, another person had confronted one of the drivers, and the two began yelling at each other, Frasco said. After several minutes on the phone with an emergency dispatcher, Frasco and the men heard an approaching police siren. "As soon as we heard the siren, the guy (who was later shot) just took off south in the field," Frasco said. The man who'd been yelling at the suspect ran after him, Frasco said.

Te Larimer County Sheriff's Office soon confirmed via emergency radio transmission that the fleeing man's car had been reported stolen to Fort Collins police. In a Friday evening press release, LCSO reported that deputies began pursuing a reported stolen vehicle out of Fort Collins about the same time Frasco said he called 911. It remains unclear exactly when the pursuit was initiated. Representatives of the Loveland Police Department, which is handling the investigation, did not return re block of southbound College Avenue for four and a half hours as the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team investigated the scene. On Friday afternoon, the mangled motorcycle and Ford Focus remained in the road, which was covered with debris.

The crash was one of two serious motorcycle crashes in the Fort Collins area on Friday. The other one, a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Highway 1 just outside of Wellington, resulted in the death of the motorcycle driver. Authorities haven't yet identified the victim. Anyone who has information about the Fort Collins crash and has not spoken to law enforcement should contact Officer Tim Brennan at 970-416-2229. Meanwhile, authorities are seeking two occupants of a white Jeep Cherokee who they believe might have witnessed the incident. Authorities haven't yet released the name of the man killed or the Larimer County Sheriff's Office deputy who shot him after a foot chase in a muddy field. The Larimer County Coroner's Office will release the shooting victim's name and cause of death.
