I Wednesday, June 16, 1965 Page Two ESCANABA DAILY PRESS, Escanaba, Michigan Free Enterprise Paper Co. Story Told By Bennett The success of the free system as evidenced in terprise, development and expansion of an Escanaba industry was described by Ernest G. Bennett, retired industrialist, to the Rotary Club at its meeting at the House of Ludington Tuesday noon. The history of the Escanaba Paper Co. goes back more than 60 years, and the success story is an example of the benefits of the free enterprise system, said Bennett, who was president of the Upper Peninsula Power Light Co.

and of the Escanaba Paper Co. until his retirement in 1954. Men like the late Matt Smith, John K. Stack, J. C.

Kirkpatrick, H. W. Reade, J. B. Moran, the Clearys and others were among the few in the area at the turn of the century who saw the opportunity for utilizing one of the region's natural resources, Bennett said.

Power To Paper They and their associates also formed the Escanaba Traction which provided transportation in Escanaba and northward to Gladstone. Construction of the No. 1 hydroelectric dam on the Escanaba River near the West Gladstone bridge provided the additional power for the street railway system. The No. 2 dam near Groos was built next, the decision was made to utilize another re, source, and the construction of a pulp mill followed.

This mill supplied the pulp needs of paper mills at Munising, Rhinelander and elsewhere. Problems Overcome Grades of paper changed and with new demands came reorganization of the company and construction of a new papermill, which was begun in 1919 and completed in 1920.

canaba Paper Co. was formed, with 50 per cent local money and 50 per cent of the capital from the Mead Investment Con The production of newsprint for mid-western dailies began and continued until Canada's mills, on the basis of cheap power and cheap wood, undersold the mills in the U. S. This brought another change in product at Escanaba this time to wall (or hanging) papers in 1930. There were problems both physical and financial.

The dam at Boney Falls washed out and the wall of water roared downriver, carrying out No. 1 dam and flooding the central power station. The plant was down for about three weeks. The manufacture of wallpapers proved profitable, and then declined as painted and paneled walls became popular. Training Youth The Mead Corp.

took over the company in 1942 by an exchange of stock. A change in product to machine coated paper was made and supplied such publications as Time, Life and others. "Mead is doing a wonderful job in Escanaba," said Bennett. Courtesy, consideration and cooperation are the foundation for la nagement relations and "when they are ignored innocent people are injured," the speaker continued. The need to better acquaint youth with the fundamental principals of the free enterprise system that spells success in the war against 1 totalitarian ideologies was voiced by Bennett.

Homes, churches, schools and groups such as Junior Achievement and others are preparing youth to better understand the American freedoms and combat the "vicious propaganda" of communism, he said. Carl Wickman introduced the speaker and the meeting was conducted by Robert Haack, Rotary Club president.
