r- NU, Kansas to Test New Quarterbacks McMichael in a narrow 14-10 win over Kentucky. Then Came Cromwell Since then the Jayhawks have surprised even their most ardent backers. Cromwell took over the first string duties and Kansas blanked Oregon State, 2(H), and last week demolished Wisconsin in Madison, 41-7. Cromwell, the Big Eight's 440-yard intermediate hurdle champ last spring, hadn't played quarterback since his high school days at Ransom, a school with a total enrolment of 400. Yet in his first start against Oregon State he broke the Kansas school rushing record of the celebrated Gale Sayers by running for 294 yards.

Last Saturday, against Wisconsin, the all-around athlete upon graduation from high school he set a national decathlon age-group record which still stands added 187 more yards. Though starting just two games this fall, Cromwell ranks sixth in the nation as a runner. He's the first quarterback in NCAA history to gain over 200 yards in a single game. Cromwell's 131.3 yards per game average even though he saw only part-time duty in two contests ranks him just behind Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin of Ohio State, who is fifth in the nation with a 138.2 yards per game average. Second in Nation Cromwell has averaged 8.5 -yards per carry second among all ball carriers in the country far ahead of Griffin's 5.8 average.

As a result, Kansas ranks ninth in the nation in rushing offense ahead of the more famous wishbone attack of Oklahoma. Adding to Nebraska's worries for the Homecoming Day tilt is the fact that Kansas leads all Big Eight teams in defense against scoring having allowed just 35 points in its four games. Cromwell and Company may find running against Nebraska a little more difficult than what they have faced so far, however. The Cornhuskers are second in the nation in defense against the run, having allowed just 73.5 yards per game while registering four straight triumphs. Nebraska is also second in total defense, a fact that will likely keep Kansas from being too successful through the air should the running game bog down.

NU Is Balanced The Huskers, with a balanced attack, are not among the nation's leaders in either running or passing, but rank a solid 14th in the country in total offense. Another key to Nebraska's success this fall has been the punting of Randy Lessman. The Huskers are tied for ninth in the nation in net punting distance of the punts less return yardage with a 41.0 yard average. Nebraska has allowed a total of just eight yards on the six Lessman punts its four foes have tried to field. Last year's matchup between the two teams had much of the same "tossup" outlook.

Kansas, then as now, entered the game with just one loss. But Nebraska demolished the Jayhawks, 56-0, and Kansas never recovered, failing to win the rest of the year. Saturday's game will be the 82nd meeting between the two schools, with Nebraska owning a decisive 57-21-3 edge in the series. In Lincoln, the Huskers have a narrower 26-15-2 advantage. The last time the two clubs met in the Capital City (1973), Nebraska eked out a 10-9 victory.

Nebraska has won each of the last six meetings. Kansas' last win was a 23-13 decision in Lincoln in 1968. By Virgil Parker Journal Sports Editor Two quarterbacks who have been thrust into the spotlight in recent days will be the center of attention when Nebraska and Kansas open Big Eight football play in Memorial Stadium Saturday. Nebraska's Vince Ferragamo, a highly touted transfer from the University of California, got his first real test under fire last weekend and responded by sparking the Huskers to a come-from-behind 31-16 victory. The performance has earned Ferragamo coach Tom Osborne's call as the starting signal caller against the "surprising" Jayhawks.

Kansas, picked for no better than a seventh-place conference finish in most pre-season polls, has roared to three straight wins after an opening game loss behind the steadily improving play of quarterback Nolan Cromwell. Cromwell, a defensive back for the Jayhawks last year, was given the complicated job of running new coach Bud Moore's wishbone offense just two weeks before the first game this fall. He played sparingly in a 14-18 loss to Oregon State, then divided time with starter Scott Husker Vince Ferragamo NU The Lineups Eyes Fenway frZ Onmln Journal mm NEBRASKA Offense KANSAS No. Name Ht. "I want it thoroughly discussed and I want it decided what is a balk and what isn't.

I have nothing against Tiant. But I say if he isn't balking, let's forget about balks. You might as well throw the book out." In question is Tiant's habit of pitching from a stretch position that includes a series of semi-stops. Anderson said he wants "a legitimate stop." Fred Fleig, supervisor of National League umpires, said "we know all about Tiant." He said the umpire would be concerned with three things. "The first is the slow step-by-step drop of his hands," said KFAB, WOW, KRNU.

against Anderson's surprise starter, Billingham. Lee has not started since Sept. 19 but won 17 games during the regular season. He was not used in the playoffs against Oakland with Johnson starting Reggie Cleveland and Rick Wise after Tiant. "For one thing, Lee's left arm is fine again after a little soreness and basically he's a ground-ball pitcher," said Johnson.

"He's also been a consistent winner in our ball park." Johnson said Wise will start the third game of the series Tuesday night in Concinnati's Riverfront Stadium. Cleveland will move to the Boston bullpen for the first three games. "Wise is a high ball pitcher and should do better in their big ball park and on their artificial turf," said Johnson. The manager must have been checking the past performance charts on that selection. Wise pitched a no-hitter against the Reds in Riverfront in 1971 and two years later carried another no-hitter into the ninth inning at Riverfront before surrendering Cincinnati's only hit in that game to Joe Morgan.

W'orld Series Comparisons The position-by-oosition comparisons of the American League champion Boston Red Sox and the National League champion Cincinnati Reds in the W5 World Series, based on over-all season records: FIRST BASEMEN Cincinnati Picks Virgil Parker Wonder Monds monster Lefty BOSTON (AP) The Cincinnati Reds get their first look at Fenway Park and its famous or is that infamous? left field wall today on the eve of baseball's 1975 World Series. The best known fence in baseball is 315 feet down the left field line and looms 37 feet high. It makes right-handed hitters positively drool and more than one left-handed pitcher has been swallowed up by it. On Thursday, it even caused a controversy in the camp of the usually placid Reds. Cincinnati Manager Sparky Anderson, challenging Fenway's southpaw syndrome in the first game of the Series by starting left-hander Don Gullett, announced he would switch to right-hapder Jack Billingham for Game Two.

That left lefty Fred Norman rather disturbed. "Sure I'm upset," snapped Norman, who won 12 games during the regular season and also captured the second game of the playoffs against Pittsburgh. "I think I'm one of the guys who got us here." OSU By Dave Sittlcr Journal Sports Staff Columbia, Mo. With preseason Big Eight Conference publicity about Oklahoma and the Seven Dwarfs turning out to be a pile of malarkey, Oklahoma State and Missouri will battle here Saturday to prove they've grown from dwarfs to giants. A sellout crowd of more than 60,000 is expected to fill Missouri's Farout Field for the Tiger-Cowboy shootout a conference-opener for both schools.

Since Oklahoma has proven it's mortal with narrow wins over Miami and Colorado, the conference race appears wide-open. Missouri and Oklahoma appear to possess the talent to compete for the league crown. Both teams are corning off successful pre-conference performances which have gained them spots in the nation's top 20. Oklahoma State holds down the No. 10 spot in UPI and No.

14 in AP. Missouri was ranked ahead of the Cowboys at No. 12 in AP, but merited only No. 18 in the UPIpoll. Fifth Once Coach Al Onofrio's Missouri squad had been ranked as high as fifth in the nation earlier this Eliker Leading Rockets By Randy York Prep Sports Editor Lincoln Northeast's Steve Eliker isn't the most conspicuous name among the statewide Class A statistical leaders.

But he's the state's only big school player listed in three of the four categories charted. Eliker, a senior halfback, ranks 10th in rushing with an 85.8-yard per game average, is tied for ninth in receiving with 39 yards per game and is involved in a four-way tie for fifth in scoring with 36 points. It's no wonder Northeast coach Bob Els calls Eliker "one of the biggest play backs I've coached." Presumably, Eliker would rank much higher on the rushing charts if he was used more. He's accumulated 429 yards on only 50 carries for a whopping 8.6 average per try. Dangerous Receiver The 5-9, 165-pound Rocket is equally dangerous as a receiver.

Although he's caught only six passes, they've accounted for 195 yards, an impressive 32.5-yard average. Eliker will try to better those totals Friday night as second-ranked Northeast battles fifth-ranked Lincoln East in a major showdown at Seacrest Field. East coach Lee Zentic has great respect for Eliker's big play potential. "But," he says, "all four of Northeast's backs are big threats. That's probably why Eliker hasn't touched the ball more." East will counter with all-state fullback Sam Yowell, the state's leading rusher with 777 yards in six games.

He's another "homerun" threat with, a 7.5-yard per carry average. Attention Friday also will focus on passing. Northeast junior Doug Berka is the state's third leading Class A thrower with a 98.6-yard per game average. East senior Dave Watters ranks fifth with 94.8 yards per outing. His favorite target is halfback Dave Stear, who ranks seventh on the receiving charts with a 45.7-yard average.

Northeast fullback Virgil Haase is fourth in scoring with 38 points. Watters is involved in the four-way tie for fifth with Eliker with 36 points. Leaders, Page 30 in Key Tilt Gullett Anderson explained his choice of Billingham saying, "We want a right-hand pitcher in that ball park." Norman didn't hide his anger at the decision. "I've been pitching against right-hand hit-. ters all my life and I don't think that 's a problem," he said.

The Reds, however, think Gullett, another left-hander, will provide plenty of problems for the Red Sox, the close-in fence notwithstanding. "We haven't seen their wall and those guys haven't seen something like Don Gullett in a long time," warned Pete Rose, the Reds' peppery leadoff batter. Gullett will be Cincinnati's starting pitcher in Saturday's opener. He'll oppose herky-jer-ky Luis Tiant, the man with a million motions, some of which the Reds think may be balk moves. Anderson was angry at a report that he had sent films of Tiant's move to the National League offices.

"That is a total lie," he said. But Anderson said Mizzou Steve Pisarkiewicz Missouri Quarterback season after an impressive 20-7 win over Alabama and victories over Illinois and Wisconsin. Minus ail-American running back Tony Galbreath, Missouri was ripped by Michigan, 31-7, last Saturday in Ann Arbor. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, is riding the crest of its most successful start in 30 years. The 'Pokes 4-0 record makers the first time an OSU club has won its first four games since 1945 when the squad finished 9-0 and won the Sugar Bowl.

"It's a whole new season for us," Oklahoma State Coach Jim Stanley said. "It's Big Eight time. Without a doubt the road Athletic Conference, blasted previously undefeated Hastings 42-21 last week. "We just had a great game against Hastings," Watchorn said. "And our defense had an exceptional game holding Hastings to -5 yards rushing." Sapio Sparkles "Our pass rush improved and we got to Schultz (Hastings quarterback Rod) about seven times and that really made a difference," said Watchorn.

Safety Ralph Sapio, the only returning letterman in the Midland defensive backfield, also helped the Warriors by intercepting two Bronco passes for touchdowns. Facing the Doane veer offense SW' Fleig. "He has to throw the ball somewhere after the final set. Once he sets, he can't then drop his hands below the belt. "Second, his rhythm in the way he drops his hands has to be constant and after everybody in the American League complained, he's been all right there.

"Third, if he throws to first he'd better look like he stepped to first before he threw. The National League calls this very strictly and we'll be watching him like a hawk. I think any trouble will be with the step." Tiant, however, anticipates no problem. "He can say what he wants. I don't let it bother me," the veteran right-hander said.

"I'm not going to change, not after all these years. I've been in the major leagues 11 years and I've never had a balk called on me." Meanwhile, Boston Manager Darrell Johnson pulled a minor surprise, naming left-hander Bill Lee to start the second game ago in OSU's 61 7 romp over North Texas State. Replacing Weatherbie is 6-2, 187-pound junior Jimmy Derrick, who directed the Cowboy offense in OSU's 17-16 hair-raising win last week over Texas Tech. Stanley, who changed OSU's offensive set to the I-formation, occasionally switches back to the Wishbone attack he ran last year. Backs Tough OSU's Terry Miller and fullback Robert Turner are two of the conference's top backs.

Miller has gained 410 yards rushing, while both backs have rushed for more than 100 yards in three of the 'Pokes four games this season. Whether Galbreath plays for Missouri or not, the Tigers will depend on the passing arm of quarterback Steve Pisarkiewicz. The 6-3, 197-pound Pisarkiewicz is the conference's second leading passer with a .438 completion average, including two touchdowns. Oklahoma State enters Saturday's contest in a unique position. It marks the first time since 1960 when the Cowboys entered the Big Eight Conference that they have started their conference schedule undefeated.
