PAGE SIX THE ESCANABA (MICH.) DAILY PRESS FRIDAY, APRIL. 13, 1951 Personals- Cu WOMAN'S PAGE Talon SocietyAMY BOLGER, EDITOR, PHONE 35 Why 'Facts Of Life' May Make You Uneasy By MURIEL LAWRENCE Unease over discussing the "facts of life" with our children can stem from feelings that are both natural and good. Those feelings are our unconscious resistance against the idea of presenting the "facts of life" in lifeless fashion. If we have been led to believe that it is improper to give warmth and feeling to our sex instruction, that may account for our constraint. A young mother faced with the "why's" and "how's" of her little boy thought she had done a fine conscientious job of sex interpretation.

It was a cold, objective, and carefully detailed blueprint of the mechanics of birth. As she talked, she was aware of a growing feeling of embarrassment; her child suddenly struggled from her lap and demanded to be allowed to return to his play in the yard. She was an intelligent young mother. She knew what had been wrong. She had bored her child by taking the life out of the facts of life.

She had also betrayed her own experience of love. That is enough to embarrass anyone. Joy, Tenderness and Pride Parents who attempt to discuss the physical details surrounding birth, drained of their emotional tone and color, either bore or disturb their children. The physical facts of human ereation, by themselves, mean as little to a child as the notes on a score mean to one who symphonic has never studied music. Sex instruction is instruction in an aspect of life.

Life is feeling, well as thinking about facts. as Proper sex education presents the physical realities of maternity and human creation, linked to life, and transfused with the joy, tenderand pride that attended that ness ereation. If we are happy parents, joy, tenderness and pride are part of the truth of our "facts of life." Our truth is what we give to our children. If we have difficulty in conveying joy, tenderness and pride in our sex instruction, we leave that instruction to who can convey them. For we may be suffering vague feelings of guilt over our parenthood.

And if we are, we need help with our problem.
