Both coaches and players saw the victory as a confidence-builder that could bid ill will for future foes on the Husker schedule and that includes third-ranked Oklahoma. "This was a game we really had to win," head coach Tom Osborne observed. "We talked it over before the game and told them (the players) that they had to win or it was all down the tube as far as the Big Eight or bowls were concerned." Wingback Ritch Bahe pointed STAFF I-back Tony Davis (25) wasn't about to have a stack of bodies stop him from scoring this Cornhusker touchdown. Davis took the skyward route to paydirt as he hurdled the human wall for six Nebraska points.

"We were loose all week in practice," he noted. "We cracked jokes and had fun and when we came into the dressing room at halftime (leading 28-3), someone yelled, "This is just like old times." The fact that the Huskers didn't add to that 28-point total in the second half was the only disappointment to Osborne. "I was a little disappointed that we didn't really put it away," Osborne said, "But we On the first play of the second quarter Tom Goedjen booted a 22-yard field goal for Iowa State. He also kicked the extra points after each Cyclone touchdown. Oklahoma ground out 411 yards rushing compared with 107 for Iowa State, which had the second best rushing defense in the Big Eight going into the game.

Davis was the second high ground gainer for the Sooners with 103 yards on 16 carries. He also completed four of eight pass attempts for 92 yards and two touchdowns. The defense also came up with some big plays in the first half and Osborne noted those, also.

They included linebacker Bob Nelson's recovery of a Bo Matthews fumble at the Colorado 14 that set up the second Husker score, middle guard Willie Thornton's blocking of a Colorado punt that gave NU the ball at the Colorado 19 to set up the third tally, a fumble recovery by tackle Ron Pruitt at the NU 29 and two Bob Thornton pass interceptions that stopped Colorado scoring threats. Anderson, who was returning to action for the first time since suffering a dislocated shoulder in the 13-12 loss to Missouri, saw all that as total confidence builders. "I think the fact that we were able to score after the defense got the ball for us gives the defense confidence in our offense and our offense has confidence that the defense can, stop people," Anderson explained. Osborne also saw the game as a confidence-builder, observing, "I think we lost some confidence at Missouri because we played, pretty well and still lost when we had some bad things happen to us. "I think this game gives us that confidence back that we need." One of the big defensive plays was by design, but it didn't come out exactly as it was designed.

"Actually, Mark Heydorff or Ardell Johnson figure to block the punt," Osborne explained of the blocked punt. "Our defensive coaches felt as they viewed Colorado films that we could block one, so we put in an all-out punt rush this week." Instead of Heydorff or Johnson getting to the punter, it was Thornton, who had entered the game in the first half when starting middle guard John Bell suffered a hyperextended knee that is expected to keep him out of the next two games. "I went by the first blocker without him touching me," Thronton explained, "And when I went by the second blocker without him touching me, I couldn't believe that I was right there." Thornton was right there much of "tfie rest of the afternoon, being in on 12 tackles. Osborne also credited the return of Anderson as a factor in the Huskers' improved performance over the past couple of weeks when Frosty wasn't in the lineup. "Frosty gives us a lift by just being around," Osborne noted.

"He's the kind of guy, who gives you 110 per cent," Humm observed of the senior split end, whose 21-yard TD pass reception was his seventh of the season. Anderson admits that he's a bit of a holler guy. "But the thing that really hurt us was that bomb just before halftime. I thought we had it played perfectly, and then he caught the ball. Brooks is just a fine receiver. "In the second half, their defense just put on some more speed and did a better job of rushing our passer. I think OU is the best football team we've played.

Bows to Sooners It looked like Iowa State's luck might change in the first half as they burst out to a 17-7 lead. The Cyclones were ahead 17-13 with less than a minute before interm ssion when Sooner split end Billy Brooks took the ball away from safety Mark Williams and scored on a 68-yard play. That put the Sooners on top 20-17, and they were never headed. "I just took it away from him," Brooks said. "We both had it in our hands.

I was knew the free safety was the last man there and he fell down, so I knew I had the TD." It was Cyclone coach Earle Bruce's first visit to Owen Stadium and the first-year coach remarked, "I've been "to a lot of snake pits in this business, and it seems like lot this year. Really, they've got a fine crowd that supports the program here." ly advantage. But the Sooner defense held him to only completion the rest of the way. Noseguard Lucious Selmon, who was in on 10 tackles, said, "Iowa State moved the ball real well. It shook us, the way they passed and moved the ball so well the early part of the game.

We just had to get settled down." Switzer was asked if he thought his team could make up the 17-7 deficit. "Of course," he said. "The first quarter is too early to give up. There's too much time left to play." Both of the Cyclone touchdowns were on passes from quarterback Wayne Stanley to tight end Keith Krepfle. Krepfle fielded a 16-yard touchdown aerial midway through the first quarter and caught a nine-yard scoring pass less than three minutes later.

(AP)-'Tve been saying all week that Iowa State has good people they've got good ball players. It's hard to believe they've lost five ball games." Those were the comments of Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer on Saturday after his third-ranked Sooners defeated scrappy Iowa State, 34-17. Most observers didn't think the Cyclones, 2-4 going into the game, would have much of a chance against the undefeated Sooners. But Switzer wasn't among that group.

He had noted the Cyclones had lost their four games by a total of 13 points. Norman, Okla. (AP) -Oklahoma State, riding on the legs of individual titlist John Halberstadt and Colin Cum-mings, edged Colorado-in a Big Eight Cross Country clash here Saturday. Missouri filled the third slot, followed by Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska Iowa State and Oklahoma. Cummings, running 26th with one-half mile left, revved up and held his pace to pass seven opponents and give OSU a 1-6-10-17-19 winning finish.

Halberstadt took his second.
