But Wisconsin wouldn't quit. After the 7-7 halftime deadlock and a scoreless third frame, the Badgers grabbed a 10-7 lead on Rich Barrios' 29-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter. When the Cornhuskers took the ensuing kickoff and marched 80 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with just 5:23 the Cornhuskers had to come from behind twice in the second half to post the triumph. "It becoming more and more obvious that we've got to be more ready to play at the outset," Cornhusker coach Tom Osborne observed. "Our team has demonstrated that we have a bunch of good people with heart and courage, but it's also obvious that we don't have the phvsical power to dominate other teams as we have in the past.

We're going to have to scrap in every game." Osborne said that emotions play a big part in football. "Teams come in here really ready to play. A win over Nebraska can mean a great deal to them. "When our guys read in the paper that they're favored by 35 points and that they're No. 2 in the nation, it's more difficult for Sept.

They (Wisconsin) were really fired up. Football is a game of fundamentals and we're going to have to work harder on the most basic one of all tackling." The clash was almost a repeat of the North Carolina State struggle a week earlier. had to go right out and try to do it again." Anderson's comment that "we know Wisconsin would be tough but they proved to be tougher than we thought," was echoed by many.

"Wisconsin is the best wmless team I ve ever seen," Osborne said of the Badgers, who have now dropped three games by a total of eight points. "At least I hope they are," the NU mentor added, "or we're in a lot of trouble. Chances are we've got to face some even tougher teams before the season is over." Nebraska opened the scoring with a touchdown on its third possession in the first quarter, overcoming a 15-yard holding penalty alorg the way. Passes of 12 and 19 yards from Humm to Anderson were the big gainers. Davis, who was hobbled by an ankle injury against North Carolina State and was not in the starting lineup, entered during the drive to contribute an 11-yard run and got a Humm pass for the touchdown.

The Wisconsin Badgers did more than pester the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. The visitors from the Big Ten gave coach Tom Osborne's Big Red and 76,279 partisan fans in the stands enough scares to last a season before Tony Davis tallied a touchdown in the final three minutes to provide the Cornhuskers with a 20-16 victory. But Nebraska, behind the left-handed tosses of quarterback Dave Humm, who set two single-game passing records 297 yards gained and 25 completions mounted its final triumphant march. Split end Frosty Anderson, who played a key role in the win by grabbing nine passes for 141 yards, said there was "a complete feeling of deflation when Wisconsin ran back that kickoff. "We thought we'd gotton the job done on our previous drive," he remembers, "and then we Tie The Trojans could gain only 3 yards in 3 downs and punted to the Oklahoma 13. The Sooners then began their best drive of the first half.

The OU offense moved 76 yards in 10 plays with Waymon Clark, Joe Washington and quarterback Steve Davis picking up big yardage running from the Sooner wishbone. But the drive broke down when Davis was thrown for a 4 yard loss on third-and-six at the Trojan 11. Rick Fulcher then missed a 32-yard field goal try. Southern Cal's touchdown came as a result of a fumbled punt by Sooner Clyde Powers at his own 25. McKay's touchdown reception came four plays later.

Oklahoma's running game was powerful but could not break through once it got deep into Trojan territory. The Sooners made it to USC's 35 before stalling and then to the 23 on another drive before Fulcher missed a 41-yard field goal attempt. Southern Cal's highly touted Anthony Davis was shaken up on his first carry of the game and saw no further action in the first half, but did return for second half action. The race then resolved into a duel. Prove Out showing the way and Secretariat staying close, to the mile point. There Secretariat went into the lead and it seemed that the race was over.

At one point Secretariat had more than a length over Prce Out, but this advantage gradually decreased, and at the stretch turn Prove Out took the lead again. He was running easily from there on and had nothing to fear from his vaunted rival as they approached the finish line. Calif. The Oklahoma Sooners drove 70 yards to score the first time they had the ball in the second half here Saturday night and tied defending national champion Southern Cal 7-7 before 88,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Quarterback Steve Davis hit paydirt from one yard out with 7:32 left in the third period and Rick Fulcher booted the extra point that ended a 14-game winning streak for the Trojans who were ranked number one in the nation going into the contest. I'SC's unbeaten string moved to 20 however.

The Sooners had trouble with mistakes in the first half, losing three fumbles in 'their own territory. Southern Cal converted on the third OU mistake to take a 7-0 halftime lead. The Sooners, a 7-polnt underdog before the battle, outgained the Trojans and had more first downs but neither team was able to Ignite much offense in the second half except for the tying drive bv the Big 8 Joe Washington, who had several big gainers in the contest including a punt return on which he retreated 20 yards before heading up field for 32 yards, picked up 13 yards on the drive's second play and fullback Waymon Clark accounted for 38 yards on six carries. His long gain was a 21-yard jaunt on a third-and-one from the Southern Cal 33. From that point, four yard gains by Clark and quarterback Davis, a two-yard pick up by Washington gave Barry Switzer's Sooners a first-and-goal at the two.

Clark tried first but picked up only a yard before Davis cracked in for the score. The Oklahoma running game piled up a statistical edge and the Sooners won the battle of first downs. But the number one ranked Trojans stiffened when they had to behind All-American linebacker Richard Wood and safety Artemus Parker. The Sooriers fumbled four times in the opening 30 minutes including the first time they ran the ball from scrimmage. The only touchdown of the first half came with 0:57 remaining before halftime when Pat Haden threw a 15 yard pass to J.

K. McKay, The extra point kick was good. Southern Cal failed to take ad Oklahoma had the ball as time ran out but elected not to use the two time outs which unofficial statistics showed remaining. The game ended with Oklahoma just inside Trojan territory. Oklahoma tied things up and produced the final count on its first possession of the second half.

Starting from their own 30, the Sooners drove 70 yards in 14 plays. Quarterback Steve Davis scored the touchdown with 7:32 remaining in the period and Rick Fulcher converted. The rest of the contest was played between the 30 yard lines. The deepest penetration came when the Trojans drove from their own 18 to the Oklahoma 30 before quarterback Haden fumbled and linebacker Rod Shoate fell on it. That drive featured a 12-yard sprint by Anthony Davis which resulted in a 27 yard gain when Oklahoma was penalized for a face-mask violation.

Southern Cal crossed into Sooner territory just once more but only as deep as the 44-yard line. The Trojans had a first and ten at the OU 45 but after Rod McNeill picked up a yard the tough Sooner defense stopped two running plays for losses back to midfield. Oklahoma's touchdown drive came after Southern Cal took the second-half kickoff and failed to move, vantage of the first two Oklahoma mistakes. After taking over at the Oklahoma 34 when AU-American linebacker Richard Wood recovered the first miscue, the Trojans moved to the OU 28 before stalling when Rod Shoate dropped quarterback Pat Haden for a loss on a fourth-and-five gamble. The Sooners were able to run three plays on the ensuing possession before coughing up the ball for the second time at their own 41.
