Nebraska seemingly took command from the outset, but three pass interceptions and a fumble kept the Cornhuskers from maintaining their momentum. He finally got the Huskers unpacked as they moved the necessary 99 yards to tie the score in seven plays.

Sophomore Tony Davis, who had another sensational day, got things going with a 39-yard scamper and then Humm hit Frosty Anderson with a 40-yard scoring pass to knot the count, 7-7, at halftime. I-back Dave Goeller sparked a third-quarter Husker effort which netted a 24-yard Rich Sanger field goal to give NU a 10-7 edge, but it was short-lived. Fritts climaxed an NC State drive with the ensuing kickoff when he zoomed the final 16 yards to give the visitors their final lead to 14-10. Then came the fourth-quarter heroics by the Huskers. Humm completed a crucial fourth-down pass to tight end Brent Longwell to keep one drive alive and then scored on a quarterback sneak.

A bad snap from center on a Wolfpack punt set up the next, which Davis tallied from two yards out, and then defensive back Bob Thornton picked off a opening win over UCLA, to start at the signal calling post. Runty moved the club with the opening kickoff right down the field to the Wolfpack five before his first errant aerial was picked off in the end zone. On Nebraska's next possession, a drive which gained the NC State 18 was foiled by the same fate. Another error was soon to follow. Randy Borg, who returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown against UCLA, gathered in a Wolfpack boot on his 34, picked up a bevy of blockers and made it to the NC State 24 but he fumbled when tackled and it didn't take the visitors long to stun the partisan crowd.

Buoyed by the break, Pack fullback Stan Fritts blasted for 14 yards and two plays later broke over left tackle and WHY WAIT? But it's the way, and the stage of his career that the triumph came which should offer encouragement. The only other time NC State and Nebraska clashed came during Bob Devaney's first year at the Husker Helm. In that 1962 game the visiting Wolf pack led 14-7 at the end of the third quarter before the Cornhuskers rallied to post a narrow 19-14 victory.

This time North Carolina State had again tallied 14 points through the first three periods and was in front, 14-10. But Osborne's first-edition Nebraska eleven put on an even greater display of final-frame offensive power by scoring 21 points to claim a 31-14 victory before 75,925 red-clad fans. Devaney went on from his squeaker with NC State to record 11 straight winning seasons, which included nine bowl trips in those 11 years, eight Big Eight Conference titles, two national championships and an overall coaching record of 136 wins against just 36 losses and seven ties.
