A bad snap from center on a Wolfpack punt set up the next, which Davis tallied from two yards out, and then defensive back Bob Thornton picked off a opening win over UCLA, to start at the signal calling post. Runty moved the club with the opening kickoff right down the field to the Wolfpack five before his first errant aerial was picked off in the end zone. On Nebraska's next possession, a drive which gained the NC State 18 was foiled by the same fate. Another error was soon to follow.
