OPKBA HOUSE BLOCK A Plaintiff in a Railroad suit Receives a Severe Lecture. Chicago. July 13.

In the suit of William M. Jones against John B. Alley in court today the judge adminis tered from the benoh a severe lecture to the plaintiff. The oase was brought to oompell Alley to share with the complainant the profits of a railroad transaction. Judge Tnley said that during the trial a letter, purporting to be a letter from Jones, urging the acceptance of Alley's proposition, waa offered by the defendant, but a witness was found who said the oriKlnal hand writing was that of Alley.

It was a bold attempt on the part of Jones to impose false evidence upon the court. Said the judge: "Yesterday I re ceived by mail a letter containing ex tracts from newspapers reflecting upon Alley. I have no reason to doubt that It emanated from Jones. I only mention it, if he is beyond the jurisdiction of this court, to show the desperate effjrts resorted to by Jenes to Kaia this suit. and it characterizes the nature of this litigation.

If not brought for malicious purposes, it was brought entirely for speculative par poses In May, 1879, the Des Moines fe Indianapolis Railroad company, running rrom uea Moines nrty-eight miles to Calaman wss on the verge of bankruptcy. Its debts amounted to (318 000. There was a reasonable certainty, the oourt said, that the road would have been sold on its mortgage indebtedness, and stock was therefore of nominal value. At this i uncture the defendant. Allev.

ascertained that the owners of the float ing debt, who also had the majority of the stock, would be willing' to Bell the floating debt and bonds cheap, and throw in their stock, giving tne purchaser control of the road. Alley made the purchase and effected a lease with the Northwestern road The stock of the road increased in value, and the sold his 20 shares at an increase of aooat SI00 per share. Jones then began his suit, claiming that he. as stockholder, should have a share of all oronts in toe matter. Jones now owns bat one share and that was purchased after the transaction complained of.

xne oourt neld that he was not therefore a stockholder. A letter from Jones, which consented to Alley's transaction with the Northwestern road, had disappeared, Baid the judge, but afterwards when the company was reorganized Al ley became president, and Jones, the complainant, director, treasurer and as sistant secretary. The conn oould not see any real grievances. The road had been lilted from a poor road to a first- class road. "All I can do." said the court, "is to dismiss the bill, with this litigious complainant at his coats." JAIL, BIRDS FLY AWAY.

At 2 o'clock this morning three notorious criminals made their escape froia the Cole county jail by sawing through the iron bars on the west side rf the building in the second story and leaping from from a small shed to the ground. Last night they kept up a loud siDging, and nuaer cover oi me noise one oi tnem cut the bus. A letter left by Deshloger and Vas- chouseless to the jUler stated that the tools had been supplied them by a friend on the outside, and that the break would have been made two weeks sooner, bat they had been waiting for clothes. Tbey also said that Rouohe had nothing to do with the soheme. it ouis fneiner, charged with an at tempt to rape, was asked by the escaped prisoners to go with them, rut refused.

STRIKES AND LOCKOUTS. The Situation at Grape Creek Mines Growing Serious Notes. St. Louis, July 13. Tbe situation at Grape Creek, Illinois, where miners are on a strike for higher wages becomes more serious every day.

The strikers are determine! that no laborers except themselves shall work the mines, and the operators are just as determined that they will oondaotthe business wlthou any interference or dictation from any body of men. A foroe of thirty-seven deputies is constantly guarding the property. A large number of plantation negroes were brought from Kentucky last week to take the strikers' places and remained at work unmolested until yesterday. when an armed mob of 200 white miners marched to the mines and demanded that the negroes should return whence they came. After an extended parley, the colored men marched to DinviHe where they will consider carefully tne advisability of continuing at work.

Meantime the mines are idle and the stri era are bilant. Tne mlniDK com pan nave eisited from thir houses all of the strikers and tneir families, in all about 1,000 men, women and. Those who nave no money to supply their simplest wants have moved into the woods and bultt huts where they live in the most abject poverty. Many have barely enougn clothing to cover tnem and tne pittance doled ont by the union scarcely prevents starvation. TANNERY BTRIKB, Boston, July 13 Tbe great strike and lockout in the tanneries and currying shops at Peabody Salem's was fully inaugurated this morning, in accordance with the vote of the Knights of Labor at their meeting last night.

Tbe men refused to go to work, in shops where tbe notice of the executive committee had been posted. The order effects 3. COO men who are now idle. OPERATORS STILL AT WORK. Chicago.

They also declare that no operators have stopped work at Ogien or points General Superintendent Olawry states that district superintendents have standing orders to arrange so that no over time shall be done but keep on hand a snffloient force of men to obviate over time. BEPORT DENIED. Chicago. Jnly 13.

In an Interview with tbe president of the Grspe Creek Coal company, be stated that a dispatch IromSt Louis, saving that an armed force of 209 men had marched to the mine and demanded the negro miners to return south, is incorrect. No violence has been oflered to tne new men Dy tne old miners. Many of tbe negroes hive been induced not to work, but a detach ment of new men are being brought in, Tbe sta ement that all the strikers have been dismissed by the company and rj acted from their houses is correct, some of the Nashville miners were induced to return to tbe south, their fare being paid by tne old men.
