10 Lincoln, Neb. Journal Saturday, November 24, 1973 Tally Sheet Explains Score a mere 77 yards he" did become the fourth best passer in Big Eight history. He bypassed Oklahoma's famed Bobby Warmack (3,744 yards from 1966-68). Humm's total, with the Cotton Bowl game and another year to play, now stands at 3,785 aerial yards. He trails only Lynn Dickey (K-State, 1968-70), NU's Jerry Tagge (1969-71) and Dave Jaynes of Kansas, who is winding up his career this year.

Split end Frosty Anderson was thwarted in his bid to reach the magic 1,000 yard figure as a pass receiver. His one catch for 16 yards leaves him at 971. He'll need 29 against Texas to become just the fourth Husker in history to make that distance in career catches. Johnny Rodgers (2,779) is the distant leader. But just 42 yards in the Cotton Bowl would make Anderson No.

It just seemed that way. crossed the plane of the goal and awarded the Sooners possession at the 20. Another came when Sanger was knocked off his feet while punting.

The referee reached in his pocket for his flag, pulled it part way out and then stuffed it back in again. Good fortune also smiled on the Sooners on their third touchdown drive. OU fun.bled at the Nebraska five yard line, but tackle Jerry Arnold recovered. Four plays later Oklahoma scored. Recounting Nebraska's three breaks is a lot easier and a lot less painful than discussing the 16 mistakes the Huskers made.

Nebraska had Lady Luck smiling on one Oklahoma pass play it looked like pass interference to everyone but the officials and another time when a NU pass was tipped but was caught by Tony Davis rather than a half dozen Sooners who were in the vicinity. The third break came when Ardell Johnson blocked an OU field goal that seemed automatic when the ball was snapped from just five yards out. But, oh, the errors. Defensive lapses which allowed a 47-yard quarterback sneak and the 34-yard pitchout gainer by Joe Washington which led to Oklahoma's first touchdown, just to cite two. Twice OU was going to have to punt, only to be given a first down because of (1) the grabbing of the face mask, and (2) 12 men on the field.

Other penalties did three pass interceptions, and a lost fumble. A couple of nice things happened to the Huskers, however. And they should be' noted. Sophomore I-back Tony Davis became the third Husker ever and the second sophomore to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. All-Am erican Bobby Reynolds did it (1,342) in nine games as a soph in 1950.

He was the only one until Jeff Kinney gained on the ground in 13 games during his senior season (1971). Davis managed just 41 yards against Oklahoma's stout defense, but that pushed his total to 1,008 for the year. Though quarterback Dave Humm had his troubles completing just eight of 20 tosses for 1 1 5 A PHOTO BY HARALD DREIMANIS tackle quarterback Steve Davis (5) for a loss. Coming up to help are John Bell (66) and Ron Pruitt (91). Nebraska played Oklahoma tough all day.

The scoreboard read: Oklahoma 27, Nebraska 0, Rut the tally sheet which determined the outcome of the football clash between the two Big Eight Conference powers here Friday read: Nebraska minus 16, plus three; Oklahoma minus two, plus'lhree. The minus figures represent errors costly mistakes which stalled an offensive opportunity or prolonged the opponents chances while the plus marks came when the ball bounced right, resulting in a lucky break. Oklahoma was really guilty of only two miscues all afternoon. The Sooners were penalized five yards on their very first play and iate in the first half had a pass intercepted.

Those were more than offset by three breaks. The first came when Nebraska's Rich Sanger boomed a punt toward the OU goal line. The Huskers' Don Westbrook seemingly saved the ball from going into the end zone by batting, it back toward the field of plav at about the one. By Dave Sittler Pre-season evaluation of the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) basketball season points to a case of the "rich getting richer." The top three teams from a year ago, Hastings, Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan, appear to be the class teams of the six-team league with Concordia, Midland and Dana fighting to stay out of the cellar. Defending conference champion Hastings could be in a league all its own with all five starters returning from last year's team which posted a 25-5 record, the best in the school's basketball history. Bronco coach Dr. Lynn Farrell brought in four junior college players, an outstanding freshman and molded them together with five holdovers to develop a team that ended up in the NAIA National Tournament. Farrell has added even more depth to a team loaded in that department.

He has brought in Jack Wesolowski, a 6-6 forward from Platte Junior College along with Rick Walstrom and Kurt McKeone, two of the state's top prep players a year ago. Coach Bob Erickson and his Doane Tigers are not about to concede the conference title to Hastings without a good fight. Erickson also returns all five starters from last year's club which finished 15-10 overall and tied Wesleyan for second place in the NIAC with a 7-3 mark. Erickson, like Farrell, had a great year recruiting to add depth to his talented team. Crete The little truck that could and did.
