Tuesday, November 12, 1963 ESCANABA DAILY PRESS. Escanaba, Michigan Page Seven Women's Activities Build Diets Around The Foods You Like EAST LANSING If you are reducing, your diet should be built around foods that are familiar to you and foods that you like. This is one of the four requirements of a sound reducing diet listed by Anita Dean, foods and nutrition specialist with the Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Service. says you must ask yourself, "Would I like to stay on this diet the rest of my life?" "The more nearly the meals resemble those you are accustomed to and like, the longer you will be willing to continue on the diet," she explains. She emphasized the importance of variety in -calorie diets.

Moderation "You can eat almost everything in moderation," she says. "The very monotony of extreme unnatural diets is responsible for their short lives." The second characteristic of the sound reducing diet is that meals are satisfying. "Successful reducing diets must allay hunger," the specialist says. "Otherwise, the dieter is constantly unhappy periodically 'breaks' the diet." way to make a low-calorie diet satisfying. she suggests, is to divide the food fairly evenly among the meals of the day This might even mean saving a portion of food for times o' the day when you especially crave to eat such as at bedtime. A sound diet is also nutritionally adequate and can mean improved health and a greater sense of well being for the overweight person, Mrs.

Dean says "Reducing diets that are too low in calories and are inadequate in nutrient content are a hazard to health," she continues. Calorie Count The fourth characteristic of the sound reducing diet is that the calorie count must be low enough to cause weight loss. According to Mrs. Dean, reducing diets are based upon the principle that when foods supply less energy than the body needs, the body must use its own stored fats as fuel. She points out that this -calorie feature is the most difficult to put into practice and the one "most exacting in terms of successful weight loss." She cautions against strenuous exercise.

It may only create a greater appetite. Moderate exercise such as walking or housework, however, may aid weight loss. Inspection Of VFW Auxiliary Monday Night Annual inspection of the V.F.W.
