Waiting Worst Part for Players mm THE Finally Arrives dominated their, opposition 1 game Jan. 1 with the national championship hinging on a victory. They didn't panic. They rallied to win. Oklahoma proved itself in a torturous three-game stretch at mid-season disposing of Southern Cal, Texas and Colorado on consecutive It's a 'pick 'em contest in the eyes of the oddsmakers.

The consensus is that it will take four touchdowns to win. The' Cornhuskers may have offered a hint of things to come when they opened up their passing attack in thumping -l Kansas State, 44-17, in their lastouting. Quarterback Jerry Tagge, connecting at an amazing .619 pace on the season, is to the Cornhusker aerial game what dazzling Jack Mildren is to the Sooner ground attack. It could boil down to the run against the pass, although the Cornhuskers insist on a balanced attack and the Sooners have employed the pass successfully in the games which meant the most to them. Nebraska, which had lost only one starter by injury through nine games, enters the game at nearly full strength.

Offensive right tackle Carl Johnson, who strained a knee in the Kansas State win, is listed as a doubtful starter, but has made the trip to Norman. Sophomore Alan Austin gets the call there if Johnson is not deemed ready for full-speed performance. The Sooners, who rested sore-ahkled Joe Wylie in their win over. Kansas, are said to be in their tbest physical shape in several weeks. You've heard it before.

It should be quite a game. By DON FORSYTHE It isn't THE GAME that's' worrying everybody it's. the wait. "You always feel you can use. another day to prepare.

It may be good technically, but; too long a layoff is not good -psychologically," Nebraska" football coach Bob Devaney observed Tuesday as the Cornhuskers np preparations for Thursday's Oklahoma "There's never been a game quite like, this Devaney There have been big games before Texas-Arkansas In" 1969,, Notre Dame-Michigan I State in 16V Army-Notre Dame in 1946 just to mention, a few. But the point Devaney raises is that never have two teams met who have so thoroughly -leading up to the big one. i His Cornhuskers have. never, trailed in a game. this season, their narrowest victory margin has been 2 points.

Oklahoma had only 13-point win over Southern Cal, but has hung up basketball-type totals in nearly every start. "Now you've got the question," says Devaney, "of which is the better of the two. "It should be quite a football game." What else can you say? The Big Eight, and national championships hangy in the tbalance to mention Nebraska's- string of 29 con-; secutive games without a' loss. It's the nation's most prc- ductive -offense, Oklahoma's ground-gobbling Wishbone-T against the Country's' stingiest defense, Nebraska's proud Black Shirts. LINCOLN, NEBRASKA NOV.

PAGE 13 What's going to happen? Devaney isn't j--, nobody is i but he hints at a tight contest. "If one team jumps ahead quickly or if it's close right to the end I don't think either team would lose its poise," he says. The Cornhuskers have been 'down that road before.
