A Fort Bragg soldier armed with three guns and shouting about President Clinton and gays in the military allegedly shot and killed four people before he was shot down by police. Kenneth Junior French, 22, was in serious condition today at Cape Fear Valley Hospital with gunshots to the face and leg, said police Chief Ron Hansen. At least five other people were treated at the hospital for injuries, including a pregnant woman, he said.

Their conditions were unavailable. French whose rank was not released walked into Luigi's restaurant, about a mile from the Army post, Friday night carrying two shotguns, a rifle and a bag of ammunition. Hansen said. "He came in the restaurant talking about Clinton and gays in the military and mumbled a few other words and then started shooting," said a police spokesman, Sgt. Mike Ballard.

Dawn Gabriel, a waitress at the Italian restaurant, told the Fayetteville Observer-Times the gunman shouted, "I'll show you, Clinton." Gabriel said the man appeared to be irrational and shot people at random, at one point shouting, "You think I'm not going to do this? I'll show you about gays in the military." An off-duty police officer, Richard Pryor, was working at a grocery store across the street when several bullets hit the side of the building, about 200 yards away. Pryor ran across the street and shot French in the leg through a restaurant window, Hansen said. The gunman went down, but got back up and continued firing. After more police arrived, Lt. Bill Simons crawled through a rear door on his stomach and shot French again, disabling him.

Among the dead were the restaurant's owners, Hansen said. Patrons scattered for cover as gunshots rang out. Hostess Anita Wheeler said she and her husband heard what they thought were firecrackers. "The first time, we all just kind of looked around," she said. "The second time, somebody yelled 'Hit the dirt.

So we all got down." Her husband was heading for an exit with their 19-month-old son, Jeremy, when a waitress reached out from a bathroom and told him to give the toddler to her. "And the guy came in the back, pointed the gun at my husband, pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire," she said. "It didn't have a round in it." Fayetteville, 50 miles south of Raleigh, is bordered on its northwestern edge by Fort Bragg. Psychologist gist blasts biological parents The Associated Press SARASOTA, Fla. Kimberly Mays' biological parents have shown a complete disregard for the girl's feelings by attacking the only family she has ever known, psychologist testified.

"You don't meddle around with a family where there's a close tie between the child and parent," Rex V. Johnson SEATLE, Wash. Rex V. Johnson, 76, formerly of Indianapolis, died Monday. Mr.

Johnson worked at Boeing Airplane retiring in 1981. Previously he worked at Link Belt, Allison and P.R. Mallory in Indianapolis. Mr. Johnson was a member of Irvington Masonic Lodge 666, Indianapolis.

Services were in Seattle. Survivors wife Sammie Sullivan Johnson; son Rex V. Johnson; daughter Sammie K. Parker; two grandsons. Robert E.

Keithley MORGANTOWN, Ind. Robert E. Keithley, 69, formerly, of Indianapolis, died Thursday home. Mr. Keithley was a member of the Indianapolis Police Department 20 years, retiring in 1968 as a lieutenant.

Then he was the security director for the Brylane Corp. 17 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church, Indianapolis, Morgantown Masonic Lodge 358 and Morgantown Order of Eastern Star 579. He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Police, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, all of Indianapolis. He was a World War Army veteran and a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, with calling from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a Masonic service at 3 p.m. Survivors wife Betty Brown Keithley; son R.

Michael Keithley, two grandsons; one step grandson. 4 A 90 said psychologist Lawrence Ritt, who has treated Kimberly for nearly five years. In a full day on the stand Friday, Ritt backed 14-year-old Kima berly's wish to cut all ties to Ernest and Regina Twigg and to preserve her life with Robert Mays, the man who has raised her since she was switched at birth in a rural Florida hospital in 1978. A court-appointed psychologist, Herbert Goldstein, was set to take the stand Monday and testify Kimberly would be "devastated" if the Twiggs are granted their wish to visit the girl. Circuit Judge Steven Dakan has tentatively set Tuesday for closing arguments and then must decide if.

or how, time with the girl will be shared by the feuding families. Most of Ritt's criticisms of the birth parents were directed at Mrs. Twigg, who last year cooperated with the author of a book that suggested Mays played a role in the switch and portrayed him as an abusive father. She repeated the accusations against Mays in magazines, on TV shows and in pretrial depositions. Mrs.

Twigg's need to see Mays "led away in handcuffs" has "overridden her ability to take care of Kimberly," Ritt said. The "attacks on Kimberly's whole family system" continued when Mrs. Twigg gave a deposition in which she referred to Kimberly as Arlena the name of girl the Twiggs took home in the baby swap, Ritt testified. Arlena died of a heart defect in 1988. "It was a very unkind, uncaring thing to do," he said.

"It shows she is totally out of touch with Kimberly's needs.".
