Krogh ntrv. MUIRFIELD, Scotland (AP) Veteran Doug Sanders blazed through brilliant sunshine and into the lead midway through the third round of the British Open Golf Championship Friday, while favored Jack Nicklaus failed to get anything going. Sanders, winner of 19 tour titles but never a major crown, ripped four strokes off par with a 32 on the front nine of the sun-swept Muirfield links, a par-36-3571 layout on the Scottish Moors. That gave him a 45-hole total of 174, four under par and one in front of determined young Tony Jacklin of England. Jacklin, like Sanders a victim of a triple bogey in Thursday's second round play, toured the front nine in 34 for 175.

Lee Trevino, -the defending champion who shared the top spot with Jacklin when the day's play started, matched par-36 on the front nine for 177 and was tied for third with nine holes to play with big Brian Barnes of England. Barnes, a British Ryder cup player and one-time U.S. touring pro, was out in 34. Nicklaus, already the winner of the Masters and U.S. Open, and heavily favored here, could do no better than match par on the front nine and fell four strokes behind Sanders.

Nicklaus was at 178, even par for 45 holes. Nicklaus, gunning for an unprecedented one-year sweep of all the world's major titles, bogeyed the first hole, scored seven consecutive pars, then got back to even par with a birdie four on the relatively easy, 495-yard ninth hole. Sanders, who blew sole control of the 364101c lead with a nightmare seven on the final hole Thursday, parred the first three holes, then stormed into the lead on a string of three consecutive birdies starting on the fourth. He bogeyed the seventh, then birdied two more. fl Messick said he was more worried about his golf test than the sales management test. i Although the UNL student hit only 12 greens in regulation, he used excellent chipping and putting (he had 29 putts for the round) to record Thursday's best round. "The pin placements were really tough and the greens 1 were difficult to putt," he said of Holmes Park. "But I think the Lincoln Country Club will play the hardest of the four courses. You've got to keep it in play there." -Bahensky, last year's outstanding state amateur, was troubled by Thursday's pin placements and ended with 37 I putts for the day.

"They stuck the pins where you weren't going to hit them," he said. "I had six putts over 90 feet."
