NU'S Dixon Out, KU's Jaynes Doubtful Bfebra tlio.iiit Backfielc 1 Starters ska, Kansas Wi Sports 21 Friday, Oct. 20, 1972 Lincoln, Neb. 3 'Q 'l I came in 1967 when a fired-up defensive unit turned in a major upset, 10-0. That game, incidentally, was the 59th outing for a Devaney-coached Nebraska team and marked the first time one of his Husker elevens had been blanked. The next season Nebraska was shut out twice, by K-State and Oklahoma, but the Big Red has now played 36 more since it last failed to score.

Last year Nebraska scored two touchdowns in each quarter, held Kansas to minus 42 yards rushing and rolled to a 55-0 victory. The Jayhawks contributed to their own downfall with five lost fumbles and three interceptions. Kansas is 2-3 on the current season, while Nebraska enters with a 4-1 record. They have played one common foe. Kansas edged Minnesota, 34-28, a team Nebraska blanked by a 49-0 count.

The Saturday afternoon clash, before a sellout crowd of 51,000 in Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, kicks off at 1:30. By VIRGIL PARKER As Nebraska and Kansas prepare to collide In a Big Eight football encounter in Lawrence Saturday, each team will be juggling its normal starting Nebraska will have to go without the services of I-back Gary Dixon, who suffered a hairline fracture of his jaw against Missouri last week. David Jaynes, the Jayhawks first-string quarterback, was sidelined in the third quarter against Kansas State with a badly bruised shoulder and is very doubtful. But there's one glaring difference in the two situations. Oornhusker coach Bob Devaney has Dave Goeller, who has split time at the I-back spot with Dixon, ready to go.

Goeller carried the ball fen times last week against Missouri. toted on 14 occasions. Goeller will be backed up by Jeff Moran (nine carries against Missouri) and Don Westbrook, who scampered 28 yards on one of his six rushing attempts last week. Nebraska also has Tony Davis who will likely be redshirted but who could be used if he's really needed. Kansas lacks such depth.

Speculation is that if Jaynes can't throw the ball, flankerback Bruce might take over the signal calling duties. Adams hasn't played quarterback since his high school days. Bob Bruegging has been listed as the Jayhawks backup man all fall, but because of an ailing back he's been sidelined and hasn't played a down. Rich Jones, a lightly regarded third stringer is the only healthy quarterback Kansas coach Don Fambrough has. Even freshmen Jud Mitchell and Scott McMichael are hurt.

However, late word from Lawrence indicates that Fambrough might try Bruegging at the outset. Such superior Nebraska depth on both the offensive and defensive platoons makes the Cor nhuskers overwhelming favorites for this 79th meeting between the two schools. It's the second-oldest rivalry in Big Eight football, topped only by the Kansas-Missouri series which will feature game No. 81 later in the season. Nebraska holds a lopsided 54-21-3 edge in the series with the Jayhawks and a commanding 29-6-1 advantage in games played in Lawrence.

(UPI) Help is on the way for the struggling Virginia Squires "Doctor is back. "Doctor is Julius Erving, a 6-foot-6 superstar forward, who filed1 suit to get out of his contract with the dub over the summer. At a news conference here Thursday afternoon, Squires' owner Earl Foreman announced the American Basketball Association club and Erving had settled their differences and Erving would return to the dub tonight. The Squires, 04 on the year with a young, inexperienced ballchrb, will play in New York tonight. They return here Saturday night for a meeting with the Carolina Cougars.

That game is expected to mark1 Erving's first appearance of the season as a Squire. Last Spring, Erving signed a multi-year pact with the Atlanta Hawks of the rival National Basketball Association, to take effect when his Squires' contract runs out in 1976. But during the summer he filed suit to get out of his Squires' obligation, claiming the original agent who signed him in, Steve Arnold, was also an employe of the ABA and paid to steer him to that league. Erving was signed by the Squires as a hardship case off the University of Massachusetts campus in 1971, where he skipped his senior year to play professional His contract with the Squires was for over half a million dollars for four years of play, with the salary to be stretched over seven years. It amounted to $79,000 a year for Erving.

Foreman stressed in a statement that Erving's contract was not renegotiated, and Erving's return to the Squires did not- settle the pending litigation between the two. A federal district court in Brooklyn, N.Y., has ruled Erving cannot play professional basketball with anyone but the Squires. Erving's attorneys are appealing the ruling. Parker's Picks By Virgil Parher By GEORGE VASS (c) Chicago Daily News Oakland, Calif. Tradition demands brave words of losers but their hollow ring made one of them, Pete Rose, laugh painfully even as he spoke them.

"Our back has been to the wall so long I'm getting humpbacked it's so heavy," said Rose, more in anger than sorrow. The anger was directed at himself but if Joe Morgan wants to share it rose is willing to let him. "It's our fault, mine and Joe's, that we're against the wall," Rose said "If we were doing our jobs, getting on base and scoring runs like we did all year, we wouldn't be on this spot." He's probably right It's unlikely that if Rose and Morgan were hitting the Cincinnati Reds would be on the verge of extinction as the world series moves into its fifth game P'riday. But they aren't, and weren't Thursday as the Oakland Athletics rallied for two runs in the ninth to beat the Reds 3-2 in a reversal of fortune that left Rose and his teammates dazed. Only Jim McGlothlin, a right-hander with a mediocre 9-8 season record, stands between the Reds and disaster He'll have to outpitch Catfish Hunter, the 21-game winner who won the second game of the series 2-1 Sunday for the Athletics.

The choice of McGlothlin as the Reds' must-stop starter was a. surprise as manager Sparky Anderson had been expected to use Gary Nolan, his top winner at 15-5. Nolan started and lost the series opener. "Nolan has't been throwing well warming up," Anderson said. "No other reason.

Carr has picked the winner of five games to triumph by 21 points or more. The biggest mismatch, he feels, will be a 28-point victory by Kansas City over Philadelphia.

Doane, undefeated in six games, is favored to repeat as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion while Kearney is currently leading the Nebraska College 'Conference with a 2-0 league mark. However, both Doane and Kearney face' their i Saturday Doane plays at Dana and Kearney hosts Wayne. Dana, sporting a 2-3 mark this season, has pulled off surprising upsets against Doane the past two years. "You just can't count these people out no matter how good things look for said Doane coach Ray Best. Kearney has fared even worse against Wayne, the defending NCC champion.

The Antelopes have not only lost the last two games against Wayne, but haven't scored a point against the Wildcats since 1968. The two battled to a 0-0 tie in 1969. "I don't know what this thing is about playing Wayne, but we've played our poorest ball game of the season against them lately," noted Kearney coach Claire Wayne Is 0-6 this season, but; three of the losses were decided by a touchdown or less. A Kearney win Saturday would clinch the NCC cham-pinshlp for the Antelopes. Doane, rated fourth nationally in the small college ranks, needs a win Saturday to keep pace with undefeated Concordia, i if Perhaps the biggest state college game Saturday is the Midland-Concordia game at Seward.

Both teams are battling for the NIAC title-Con-. cordia has a 2-0 conference record and Midland owns a 1-1 mark. One team that appears out of the NIAC race is the Nebraska Wesleyan Plainsmen, who suffered their second conference lost last week in bowing to Concordia, 35-28. Wesleyan travels to Spearfish, S.D. for a Saturday non-conference game gaainst Black Hills.
