Grand Island was hampered in its title defense when sprinter Larry Tierney pulled up lame during the morning preliminaries and was scratched from afternoon action. Loewenstein, after his win in the highs and a runnerup finish to Butts in the lows, was challenging for the lead on the anchor leg of the 830-yard relay when he suffered a muscle cramp. Only two records fell.

By VIRGIL PARKER IYep Sports Writer Kearney Scottsbluff's Gary Kellogg unleashed the longest discus throw in Nebraska high school history, but Grand Island, despite being plagued by injuries throughout the season, successfully defended its Big Ten track title here Saturday. Kellogg sailed the platter 188-3 on his final toss, nearly 13 feet further than the old league mark and almost The Big Ten Conference may be ready to do something to ease the cost squeeze on its athletic programs. Up for consideration when the Big Ten holds its spring -meetings at Purdue this week is an item which would' change a long-time stand against permitting pro teams to use collegiate facilities. Big Ten commissioner Bill Reed predicts that the vote will be close.

Six votes are needed to change the present rules. the greatest pinch are Minnesota and Northwestern, who battle pro football, basketball, baseball and hockey teams for the sports dollar. Conceivably, they could benefit from stadium and ticket sharing plans with the pro clubs they're now fighting. Special Events Sought The most likely development, if the proposed legislation passes, would be for special events held on college campuses. For instance, the Chicago Bears might see fit to play an exhibition in Champaign or the Cleveland Browns might be persuaded to play an exhibition in Columbus.

The Illinois stadium seats 71,119 and the Ohio State stadium 81,000. John Erickson, former Wisconsin basketball coach who's now the general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks, has reportedly contacted new Badger athletic director Elroy Hirsch about the possibility of holding 1970 NBA playoff games In the fieldhouse at Madison. Laucr improved on his season's best with a 13-7V4 pole vault for a new mark. The top timing of the day came- in the 220 when Hastings Tim Lebsacn churned the furlong in :22.0, the fastest clocking in the state this year, but tne breeze was too brisk and the record not allowed. Hastings' fine showing in the sprints, with defending champion Tierney absent, gave the Tigers second place ahead of Scottsbluff.
