de At Ease An Ode to Fat "And let your soul delight Several years ago I lost own diet plan. I lived on homemade yogurt, called "rabbit food." I pasted on the refrigerator door to meals. by Jim Moore itself in fatness." Isaiah 55:2. 72 pounds by developing my fowl and what I charitably a picture of fat, old me deter me from snacks between I weighed myself each morning and posted the results on a calendar that I had to face throughout the day. This forced me into a continuing confrontation with my problem.

For further discipline my wife dished up all my meals with' the same deadly dictum: "This much and no more." I walked or jogged 4.3 miles each day and also went through 45 minutes of calesthenics including, among other exercises, 50 push-ups and 40 sit-ups (level 4, President's physical fitness program). I dropped from 257 lbs. to 185 lbs. I became disgustingly and revoltingly healthy. On the night I reached my goal of 185 I celebrated by eating a giant porterhouse steak plus all kinds of other goodies.

This, alas, stretched my, stomach back to its former size and ever since I've been fighting a miserable and losing battle. Gained Some Back I've gained back 20 lbs. (sob and, in so doing, lost a heck of a lot of respect for myself. I find I ain't got all that wonderful will power I thought I had. When I weighed 257 I was not only fat, but also relatively dumb and happy.

As I lost weight I became more active, more alert, more sleepless and more mean! I would occasionally find myself growling or snarling like a dyspeptic terrier for absolutely no reason at all. And I became even harded than usual to live with. In Fact, I became a truly miserable human being. At this point I kept recalling a particular speech from Act 1, Scene 2 of Shakespear's Julius Caesar: "Let me have men about me that are fat; sleek-headed men and such as sleep o'nights. Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look; he thinks too much; such men are dangerous." This got me to thinking.

Meanness Warning By law, each pack of warning. I'm wondering if all also be required to carry the Caesar on their covers to protect Think what might happen wrong places all began dieting ment. Too? cigarettes must carry a health diet books, in fairness, shouldn't above quotation from Julius the world from meanness. if the wrong people in the at precisely the same mo- For example if Leonid Brezhnev and President Nixon and Mao Tse-tung all decided at once that they were carrying a little too much weight, we might have World War IlI and World IV in the same week. It's been said that inside every fat man is a thin man who's trying to get out.

Maybe, for the salvation of the world, we'd better keep those mean, thin guys de inside us where they won't cause any trouble. Golly, gee, I'm sure willing to do my part. Please, ahem, pass the potatoes and gravy P. S. Of course, I'm kidding and I haven't given up the battle yet.

But I do honestly find that I must constantly strive for a happy medium between excess blubber and excessive meanness. G-r-r-r-r. This document will form the base for priorities for some $150,000 anticipated as Nebraska's share of the federal program for the new year.

It is estimated by latest available figures that there are disabled Nebraskans in need. The federal program helps the mentally retarded, the cerebral palsied and the epileptic with some 15,000 in the first category and about 7,420 in each of the other two developmentally disabled groups. The new plan, based on program deficits, proposed 1973 funds be divided by $40,000 for statewide services and $15,000 for each of the six regions. Regional service priorities are varied but the statewide services priorities for grants would be those providing a mobile diagnostic unit to provide about 400 clients with certain diagnosis and treatment referrals, or a statewide advocacy program for the developmentally disabled. The latter would use existing consumer groups and agencies for information and referral services, sociolegal services and public education.

It is projected that 1,500 clients could be served by these agencies. The new plan also provides that technical assistance in community organization should be provided by the advisory and planning council in Nebraska's 20 designated poverty area counties. The grant is awarded on a 2-1 matching basis with state funds already appropriated.

The present building at 13th and was started in April, 1941, and completed in 1943 when it was billed as "a dream come true." As University reading collections grew over the years the present library seemed to shrink until it bulged and spilled over into a series of separate special collections scattered across the sprawling UNL campus. NU administrators have given the library addition ha top priority among capital improvement projects for several years but time and again funding has been cut and building plans delayed. Students efforts to "Make Love No. 1" raised several thousand dollars this past year and focused statewide attention on the need for immediate action on the library dilemma. Current plans indicate that hopefully, bids may be let late this summer on what is now estimated as a $3.5 million project..
