Former Gloves Champs Win, Lose in Smoker Dallas, Tex. () A brand spanking new "relaxed" version of the Dallas Cowboys will meet the Green Bay Packers Thanksgiving Day in a nationally televised National Footbaii League game. Coach Tom Landry called the plays for veteran quarterback Craig Morton Sunday and the Cowboys responded with a 45-21 victory with Morton never looking better. "Morton played like he did last year he was more relaxed and looked natural," said Landry. This came after Dallas was humiliated 38-0 by St.

Louis. The victory gave Dallas a 6-4 record and a tie for second place in the National Conference East with New York's Giants. St. Louis is 7-2-1 and the leader in the division. The Packers arrived in town Monday and veteran quarterback Bart Starr is showing excellent progress with a hurt knee.

Starr is expected to start in the game which is expected to draw 58,000 fans into the Cotton Bowl for the 2:35 p.m. kickoff. The Stanford quarterback, recipient of the coveted Heisman Trophy given annually to college football's outstanding player, is anxious to try his passing skills in the National Football League. "I put any kind of price tag on but I hope the Heisman Trophy helps," he told reporters assembled in New York shortly after he had been declared the winner of the balloting Tuesday.

The Heisman Trophy won't hurt him a bit when it comes time to talk contract. It's prestigious for a pro team to count a Heisman winner among its cast. But that's about all. Heisman Trophy winners, especially quarterbacks, don't have a particularly impressive record in the play for pay ranks. No Guarantee of Pro Success 1 Five of the past eight Heisman winners have been quarterbacks.

Two of them, Oregon State's Terry Baker and UCLA's Gary Beban, were cast aside by the pros after lengthy trials. Roger Staubach, John Huarte and Steve Spurrier are still in there pitching but seldom on Sunday. The non-quarterback Heisman winners in recent years Mike Garrett, O. J. Simpson and Steve Owens have generally had more success than the quarterbacks when they moved up to the pro ranks.

Garrett proved that lack of size was no great handicap as he enjoyed great success while with the Kansas City Chiefs. Simpson hasn't been as spectacular as the Buffalo Bills had hoped, but was doing well this year before being sidelined by a knee injury. The jury is still out on Oklahoma's Owens, who has missed the first half of the season with Detroit because of a shoulder injury. He had, however, locked up a starting job with the Lions before the injury. Plunkett's credentials are excellent.

His 7,544 career passing yards are Jnore than double what Baker, Huarte and Staubach achievein their college careers. And considerably more than Bebar and Spurrier Statistics Not Everything But raw statistics don't tell you anything about how a quarterback goes about his job when hounded unmercifully by the collective "fearsome foursomes" of the NFL Joe Namath threw for only 757 yards and five touchdowns as a senior at Alabama. Bart Starr threw for only 587 yards in his final season on an Alabama team which lost all 10 games it played. Roman Gabriel passed for just 937 yards on a North Carolina State team which finished 4-6 in his senior season. Ability counts, but so does character.

There's plenty of The second in a series of boxing smokers at Pershing Auditorium Tuesday night saw 44 fighters tune up for future Golden Gloves competition. A couple of former Southeast District Golden Gloves champs, Randy Nelsen and Mike Wilson, had mixed success. Nelsen was upset by Dave Hill in a crowd-pleasing bout while Wilson registered a TKO over Stromsburg's i Erickson in 1:20 of the second round. The third in the series of smokers is set for Pershing Dec. 15.

Besides, we are always telling kids today not to drop out, to finish school, to set targets and work towards them. What would they think if I had dropped out for professional football?" he asked.
