Under present plans, the new community hospital patient wing will have 54 to 62 acute care beds, plus a central core for surgery, laboratory and other supporting services to patient care. The existing hospital has 83 beds, 14 used as extended care. The hospital design by Omaha architect Leo Daly provides for a future wing on the other side of the central core as a medical arts center. It could provide areas for nursing and paramedical education, meeting rooms and a home health care unit. Dr.

Mason said emphasis will be placed on outpatient and emergency care in the proposed hospital. Cornhuskers9 'Big Head' to Get to Miami The problem of transport one of the University of Nebraska's mascots to Miami for the Orange Bowl game was solved Wednesday.

The "mascot" is that oversiz ed head of a man wearing a red cowboy hat, worn and paraded before crowds at Husker football games. NU boosters were stymied for a time by the fact the head is too large to be transported by planes normally carrying air reight out of Lincoln. But Don Shriner of Lincoln, who has been a leader of the ef fort to raise funds for the Orange Bowl float, said some "very fine Nebraska boosters" who desired not to be identified offered to fly the head to Miami. The mascot will arrive in time to be used in the Orange Bowl game and appear at the Nebraska-LSU football game New Year's night, he said. In terms of priority, based on the State Hospital Flan used by the State Advisory Council on Hospital and Medical Facilities to recommend Hill-Burton grants, St. Catherines has a high rating. So do York, Gordon and I a 1 Deaconess in Omaha. In special fund-drive activities already under way, the employes at St. Catherine's Hospital have oversubscribed their $10,000 goal by 11.7.

Another important date in the hospital's history is Jan. 1, when the Domican Order of Sisters will lease its St. Catherine's Hospital to the board of trustees of the new Community Hospital organization. This move was agreed upon after Sister Paschala, hospital administrator, and others told community leaders that the Catholic order could not afford the major renovation needed, much less 'the financing of a replacement. The newest portion of the hospital is 22 years old.

Most of it was built 50 years ago. Actual construction cost of replacement is estimated at $1,825,000, compared to rebuilding or major remodeliag costs of $1,673,000. At stake without assurance of improvement is the hospital's eligibility to treat Medicare and Medicaid (welfare) patients. These account for about 60 of the hospital's patient income. Physicians and dentists, who have lent their support to the major project, will be represented in hospital planning by a liaison committee, according to Dr.
