2 October 25, 1970 Lincoln Sunday Journal and SU 7-1 7J7 Defense Fuelled 1 Blitz start, was 10-13 for 157 yards at the intermission. Pounds was just 2-9 with two tosses intercepted and had yet to connect with either Graham or split end Hermann Eben, his two leading receivers. Things balanced out as Devaney sent 59 players into action in the second half and the Cowboys finally got their high-octane passing game going. Pounds hit Eben for 10 and 35-yard touchdowns and Graham for an 84-yard scoring strike on the game's final play i ft s- 'f 1 i A A If A I 1 (if I Cont. The Black Shirts held Oklahoma State without a first down on their next six possessions before intermission They gave the offense good field position and Brownson knew what to do with it. In rapid succession the Corn-huskers drove: From their own 25 to the Cowboy 25 where Paul Rogers kicked a 42-yard field goal. From their own 48 to a touchdown on Brownson's yard pass to Guy Ingles. From midfield for. a two-yard scoring plunge by Joe Orduna.

For a 66-yard scoring punt return by Johnny Rodgers, and From their own 28 to the O-State 24 where Rogers booted a ,1 41-yard field goal as the clock ran At that point the Cornhuskers had 18 first downs and the 1 Cowboys just two. Nebraska had amassed 316 yards in total offense and Oklahoma State just 43. Brownson, getting his second "They put us in a hole early," Chaffee said. "It seemed we were trying to get out most of the game. "But Young and Colvert deserve a lot of credit They are seniors and have played good ball all four years.

Colvert not only intercepted two passes but also batted two more down that might have been good for touchdowns." Chaffee also was quick to praise his team for not letting up. But those three breaks helped the Plainsmen defeat the Cardinals, 14-7, in a tough defensive game. Wesleyan's three breaks were two pass interceptions and one blocked field goal attempt.

Jewell was leading at the time, 7-0. Wesleyan took eight plays to score with Rick Shibata going over for the touchdown. Rick Boals converted on the extra point attempt to tie the game 7-7. Colvert's other interception came late in the game. The Cardinals had a first and goal on the nine when Colvert made his interception in the end zone.

NWU then ran out the clock to end the ball game. Plainsman coach Harold Chaffee said the game made him a little "We had some anxious UNO Squeezes Past Ft. Hays, moments during the last few minutes," Chaffee said. "We really earned this game. "It seemed like we -were in the hole all night.

Every time the ball would bounce, it seemed to go William Jewell's way. Every time that is except when Young blocked the field goal attempt." An example was a 67-yard punt by the Cardinals which moved the ball from their own 19 to the Wesleyan 14. Another time a William Jewell punt seemed bounding towards the end zone when it took a bad bounce out of bounds at NWU's three. Northeast was unable to register a single first down during the first half of play and garnered but one in the third quarter. With five minutes left In the game the Capital City Rockets had managed just 39 yards, total yards on the ground. Then coach Bob Els' crew finally came to life in a determined drive Northeast marched 96 yards to pay dirt, picking up six first downs along the way. But it was too 1 a e. Grand Island, capitalizing on a blocked punt in the first quarter and a 22-yard field goal just before the halftime gun, already had victory assured.

But it was too late. Grand After Northeast's third unsuccessful possession in the first quarter, Grand Island's Ron Albee crashed through to block a punt and give coach Orv Qualsett's Islanders the ball on the Rockets' 19 yard line, lrtrn nlave lofpr niiarfprharlt t-J Randv Evans sneaked in from one yard out and Joel split the uprights to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. In the second stanza Northeast had a golden opportunity go down the drain. Ken Hippie picked off a Grand Island screen pass and rambled down to the Islanders three yard line before he was collared. But the Rockets were offside on the first play, setting them back to the eight, and on the next fumbled the ball away.

Ironically, 31 points would have won any of the last eight games the Cowboys lost to Nebraska. The Cornhuskers matched the Oklahoma State, production with some more fireworks' of their own, however. i Rogers hiked his career field goal total to 22 with a 38-yard boot, Jeff Kinney plunged two yards, Woody Cox hauled in a 26-yard pitch from Jerry Tagge and John Decker raced 73 yards with an interception of a Pounds screen pass to add', to the whopping Nebraska score.

The fourth-ranked Cornhuskers compiled some impressive statistics of their own as they hiked their record to 6-0-1 and became the only unbeaten team remaining in Big Eight play. Brownson and Tagge again offered evidence that they're the greatest 1-2 quarterback punch In the country as Brownson went 11-15 and Tagge 8-12 for 275 total air yards. Rodgers accounted for 240 yards in rushing, receiving and returns for his biggest day as he hiked his scoring string to seven games. Little-used sophomore Bill Olds emerged as the Cornhuskers' leading rusher as he bulled for 62 yards in seven carries in a relief role at fullback. And Rogers delivered his best kicking since the Sun Bowl game as he accounted for 15 points and boomed 7 of his 11 kickoff3 into the end zone to keep the Cowboys penned deep in their own territory.

Nebraska risks its unbeaten conference mark and major bowl Invitation at Colorado next week. Scouts from the Cotton, Sugar and Gator Bowls were duly impressed by the Big Red Saturday. They feel that high school class rank and test scores don't necessarily, give a complete picture of a youngster's ability to do college work. Lee Harris, who two years ago played a major role as Omaha Central snapped Lincoln Northeast's lengthy winning streak in the state basketball tournament, is a case in point. He was a "non-predictor" and as such was ineligible even to practice with the freshman team when he enrolled at the University of Nebraska last year. Lee scored ail of his points last year in the classroom, compiling an excellent 3.2 grade average. With that behind him he's back in basketball togs again, bidding for a spot on the Cornhusker varsity.

Having missed a full year of competition hasn't helped Lee, but Cornhusker coach Joe Cipriano likes the 6-3 sophomore's quickness.
