Cipriano Says- rn Any Way we me Cipriano noted that injured center Willie Campbell should be ready for the tourney. "Sprained ankles usually take about 14 days to heal, but Willie is improving every day. I certainly hope after sinking 32 in a row. Co-captain Bob Bedell kept Stanford in the game. He run 10 consecutive points starting the second half in five minutes and was high for both teams with 26.

Twice during the game Nate Branch got scoring plays which nearly brought the rafters down with applause. The By JACK ANDERSEN Nebraska basketball coach Joe Cipriano was the happiest man at the NU Coliseum Monday night after his Husk-ers disposed of Stanford," But he sent up a couple oi warning signals concerning his basketball team which now sports a 6-1 record best among teams in the Big Eight First came a "very pleased' answer when asked how he liked the Huskers' four point win over Stanford. A complete rout seemed possible at halftime when Nebras glimpse of duty from the. high post Monday night. Getting back to Stanford, the Nebraska coach said this was the best team his club had faced.

"Stanford has a fine team. They didn't give up the easy baskets when we went into the control game. I thought our first half defense was the best we have played "Our board play was real good. Grant (Simmons) played an outstanding game against their fine guard (Art Harris). Fred (Hare) did a fine job on offense." Hare got 14 points and led all rebounders with 11.

High point honors for the Huskers went to Tom Baack, another sophomore at 6-5, who got 22 points including 16 in that torrid first half. However, Baack missed his first free throw of the season fense), so with a lead like that we just held onto the ball. "We made some key errors instead of key baskets on our attack. But why shouldn't we hold the ball. I'll hold it any time and if we win by four that's fine with me," noted the Husker mentor.

Then Cipriano looked ahead to the Big Eight tournament next week where Nebraska meets Missouri in a first round game Monday at 9:30 p.m. With a 6-1 mark it would appear the Huskers should be in the thick of things, but Cipriano recalled, "We went down there (Kansas City) last year with a good 5-3 mark and lost three straight. "The record really has nothing to do with it. It's the frame of mind that counts and we must do our very best." ka went to the dressing room with a 50-37 edge and Stanford doing a fast fade under the fast break. "They changed tempo on us.

"No," Tony said most emphatically when asked if his, or anybody's bright future could cloud their view of their final collegiate contest.

"I really want to play in this one," Tony said. "And I know they (the pros) won't want me any more after the game than they do before. With 1:28 to play Stanford was pressing at 69-65, but Branch stole the ball on defense, drib bled the lenffth of the court alone and literally rammed the ball through the hoop. A 54 shooting effort from the field was the difference for Nebraska. The losers hit 37.7.

Steen disclosed Tuesday that Nebraska is ready to move ahead with a $10 million outdoor development of history-rich Fort Robinson if federal lands there can be acquired. Steen said the northwest Nebraska site would be made into a major western United States tourist attraction.

Funds for the massive project, he said, would come from the new Federal Land and Water Conservation Act. Steen said Nebraska expects to receive $60 million under the act over the next 25 years. It already has received more than $1 million this fiscal year. The act provides for land acquisition and recreational development on a 50-50 federal-state money matchig basis. I'm doing things like I did as a sophomore." Like any football player, Tony likes to catch the football and run with it, but in view of his future, he's grateful now that Devaney decided to make him a permanent tight end.

"I'm not fast enough to be a flanker back or split end," Tony said as he relaxed at the Camelback pool. "The only way I could help the team was on defense or as a blocker. "I like blocking. It's make until we announce the name of the coach," Cross said after a meeting with the council. Jeter, incidentally, was indirectly responsible for a bit of fun Monday at Scottsdale Quarterback Club where Devaney spoke. After the guests had recovered from their aching laugh muscles, a fan asked Bob if recruiting was important in his program. Bob told how much it meant, then said it was much easier to coach the boys if they were on your campus. Then another asked Bob if he might repeat the story of how Jeter was recruited. Bob did, explaining it wasn't him who had done any signing with the Jeter family, but aide Jim Ross instead.

While on the subject of recruiting, the Quarterback Club emcee noted that Arizona State coach Frank Kush was also pretty tough. But that he apparently was missing a little in this one area. So they gave him a hymn book. Bob was in rare form at the meeting and was so informed by some of the fans, Bob acknowledged this by saying after a talk one time a guy came up to him and said: "You're pretty funny but don't ever give up your day job." And he hasn't. Bob sent the club through two final drills Monday, the last one under the lights.

He expressed pleasure with the progress'of the team. Before leaving for Lincoln Tuesday morning, Bob said he was grateful for the fine courtesies extended to him by everyone in Phoenix. The Huskers were scheduled to arrive in Lincoln Tuesday afternoon, go to their homes for Christmas and regroup for a Dec. 26 trip to Miami. 4" 8 By CURT MOSHER Phoenix, Ariz.

A lot of things stood out here in the sunny southwest where the Nebraska football team did its pre-Christmas training for the Orange Bowl engagement with Alabama New Year's night in Miami. But one of the most impressive things was the spirit and morale of the team. Everyone knows that coach Bob Devaney is something of a master in these fields, but you would think even he might have On this team are several seniors who are doing all of this for the third time, some juniors who are trying their hands at it for the second time and a group of sophomores who have no reason to doubt that they'll be doing it again. And, what's more, this team has at least three players who will move very quickly into the high income tax bracket once the game with Alabama is over. One of them is tight end Skaters Returning To Lincoln Frank Cahill, national field representative of the Roller Skating Rink Operators Association- of America, announced Monday that Lincoln has been awarded the 1967 National Roller Skating Championships.

Meeting with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Conventions Committee and representatives of the Nebraska Centennial Commission, Cahill noted that Lincoln has become the National Championship site for an unprecedented three out of the last six years. Lincoln hosted the meet in 1962 and again in July of 1965. Last summer's meet brought 1400 competitors, the best of a field of over 20,000 and their families to the Capital City. Cahill stated that the 1967 championships will be held July 29 through August 6. The ABC Television Network will be on hand once again to televise the competition on its Wide World of Sports program.

"At least. I know where I stand now all alone," Matte said. "But I can't have any more pressure on me than I had last week, so what difference does it make? "I guess the pressure will be on Bobby Boyd," Matte said. "He'll have to learn what to do in case I get hurt." Boyd, like Matte, was a quarterback in college Boyd at Oklahoma and Matte at Ohio State. Boyd, a defensive halfback, has never played the position in the NFL and Matte didn't.

until Dec. 2 when substitute Gary Cuozzo followed No. 1 quarterback John Unitas to the sidelines with an injury which required surgery. Matte, an NFL halfback for five seasons, used his running ability to advantage against the Rams and was the game's leading ground gainer with 99 yards rushing. Brown, acquired on waivers from Pittsburgh last week, tossed one touchdown past against the Rams while Haff ner warmed the bench after being activated from the Colts' taxi squad.

Since they were not on the Baltimore roster for the final two regular season games, Brown and Haffner were not eligible for the playoff. Colts' President Carroll Rosenbloom tried unsuccessfully to have the league rule waived. There was no indication who opposed Baltimore's request, but Matte said he would have objected, too, if he had been voting for either Cleveland or Green Bay. "I didn't think the request would go through," he said. "I guess they would rather play against somebody like me." With another week of practice to sharpen his timing and accuracy, Matte figures to pass more than the two aerials he tried last Saturday.

Shula probably will call the plays from the sidelines, and if Matte gets in a jam he can look at the crib note on his wrist. "If I'm grasping for something to do, I can take a peek," Matte said. "Even if the Packers see the list, it won't help them. They already know our plays but they still have to guess which one is coming next." In Green Bay Packers' eyes, Matte may be a leftover but not a pushover. "The feeling of the playeri last Saturday was this Matte looked as good as any quarterback we've seen," said Packers' defensive tackle Henry Jordan.

"He's a real professional. He's cool and he' poised," said Jordan, Norman, Okla.
