Toronto ran its winning Streak to games by whipping Pittsburgh with rookie Bill MacMillan scoring twice. California, beating Detroit, continued its mastery pver East Division clubs.

The Golden Seals, last in the West, have won eight and tied one against' the East, but has yet to beat a team in their own division. California built an early 2-0 lead on goals by Gerry Ehman and Earl Ingarfield and then withstood the Red Wings the rest of the way. Carol Vadnais and Doug Roberts scored the other Seals' goals while Garry Unger and Tom Webster clicked for the 7 the club. That's because the mask he was wearing is a custom-built $150 job. "It was made by Ernie Higgins, a fellow from Boston," said Giacomin.

"He's done them for about 60 per cent of the goalies in the NHL." The new mask is constructed from a fibreglass cloth material reinforced with resin. Higgins has provided Giacomin with two- models, one which covers his ears as well as his face and one which is somewhat more conventional but still affords the goalie more protection than the mask he started using this season. "It fits more snugly around the eyes," said Giacomin "and I can see the puck at my feet better with this one. But I'm still working on it, filing it and sandpaper on it." Giacomin didn't have; to be unbelievable to beat the Sabres. Routine was enough.

He protected a 1-0 lead through two periods and then the Rangers wrapped it up with third period goals by Pete Stemkowski, Walt Tkaczuk and Jean Ratelle. Ted Irvine had New York's first goal. Times and sometimes masks too, Phil Esposito scored two more goals help NEW YORK (AP) Ed Giacomin's brand new face mask is one-for-one a shutout in its first National Hockey League appearance. You can't ask for a better debut than that. Giacomin kicked out 20 shots Wednesday night for his fourth shutout of the season the' first one in his ghostly-looking new milky white mask as the New York Rangers blanked the Buffalo Sabres 4-0.

It was the second straight shutout for New York Gilles Villemure blanked Los Angeles i Sunday and extended the Rangers' home ice unbeaten streak to 15 games. Giacomin and Villemure have six shutouts between them and New York's 58 goals against is the "best defensive mark of any team in the NHL. New York remained two points back of Boston in the East Division race as the Bruins downed Los Angeles Elsewhere, Toronto whipped Pittsburgh 4-2, Chicago walloped St. Louis 8-3, Montreal tied Minnesota 1-1 and California turned back Detroit' Emile Francis, general manager-coach of the Rangers, rewards his goalies with $100 bonuses for shutouts but Giacomin's job Wednesday was even more expensive for Terps, Coach Socked By Rated Carolinans Holiday Rest Near for Cage Clubs Omaha Art Hernandez, the world's fifth ranking middleweight, completely outclassed Sal Martinez, a Mexican who brought an impressive 27-1-1 record into the fight, here Wednesday night, stopping Martinez on a TKO in 2:04 of the fifth round. Hernandez, who won every round, broke Martinez' nose early in the fight and blood began gushing from it again with a straight right hand midway in the fifth round.

Seeing that Martinez was obviously outclassed, referee Lew Eskin stepped in and halted the action. j. "He's much better than we thought he was," Mel McOrris, trainer for Martinez said of Hernandez. It was only Martinez' second loss of his career, both defeats coming via the TKO route. His earlier loss came on a cut eye.

Martinez had won 26 of his 27 fights by knockout, but seldom was able to touch the classy boxing Hernandez. It was Hernandez' seventh straight win since suffering a loss to Emile Griffith on a disputed decision in Sioux Falls, S. a year and a half ago. Hernandez' record is now 53-13-2 and promoters of the Cornhusker Boxing Club hope to line him up for a defense of his North American Federation championship early next year. All four of the other fights on the card here also failed to go the distance.

Vic Brown, a Buffalo, New York heavyweight, who stopped former Omahan Ron Marsh here last summer, put Cleveland's Harold Carter away with a knockout in 1:45 of the fifth round in the scheduled eight-round semi-windup bout. The quickest KO of the night was scored by Dick Pelster of Norfolk, who stopped Ron Mer-ri weather of Braxton, in The logical question of what happened to Colorado in the Liberty Bowl has a slightly different twist in Cornhusker country. The questions fielded here this week are of a more pertinent nature: "Did the Cornhuskers learn anything from the Colorado game?" Did they learn anything? Probably not The Colorado-Tulane frame has almost nobearingonthe Nebraska-LSU matchup. But it did serve as a reminder that you're eligible to lose' any time you go against a decent opponent. What did happen to Colorado? Coach Eddie Crowder didn't elaborate, but he observed after the game "we probably will refer to it in the future as the 'Bad Judgment Bowl'.

Looking back, we would have been better off not to have accepted the invitation. That was our first bad Judgment and it went on from there." The Buffs appeared to be 1 a i in two prime areas-motivation and quarterbacking. The, former probably stemmed from the fact they were making a repeat trip to Memphis and that Tulane was not a "name" opponent. The latter problem was an injury to Jimmy Bratten, who; made the triple option attack go with his ball handling, running and faking. In those critical a a at least, Nebraska will be strong No mistake about it, the Cornhuskers are happy about making the Miami trip.

And there are two healthy, talented quarterbacks ready to play. Hines, Beamon Change Teams Sprinting and jumping on to other topics featuring progress reports on Olympic track champions Bob Hines and Bob Beamon. HLnes asked for, and got, his release from the Miami Dolphins and was promptly signed by the Kansas City Chiefs, where Hank Stram has the reputation of getting great mileage out of rejects from other clubs. Hines was overjoyed by the move. "It beats getting the gold medal," he said after joining the Chiefs' taxi squad.

"I'm a world class athlete and I deserve to be with a world championship team. I will become a super star because I will get the chance I did not get in Miami." The Dolphins hung a "bad hands" label on Hines, a :09.1 sprinter. He still had some appeal elsewhere, however, as nine other NFL teams contacted him within 48 hours of his release by Miami. Beamon is also bidding for a pro sports career. The former Texas-El Paso long jumper is now attending Adelphi University in New York and doing his jumping up and down for rebounds on the basketball team.

After three games the 6-2ft forward had 44 points and 30 rebounds, but he has to make an impression fast because his eligibility runs out Jan. 30. Beamon was at North Carolina for a semester before enrolling at Texas-El Paso. "If I couldn't go into the NBA I would like to play for the Harlem Globetrotters," Beamon says. That's a wish that may be fulfilled.

Lefty Driesell, the Terps' coach, was punched by John Ribock, a South Carolina player, as he tried to break up a fight among players of both teams that erupted near the Maryland bench Wednesday night. The melee caused referee Gene Conley to call off the college basketball game at Columbia S.C. with' 4:52 left to play.

At the time the nationally second-ranked Gamecocks were far ahead at 96-70 and that went into the books as the final score. "John Ribock hit me," said Driesell who suffered a bruised cheek and lip. "All I was trying to do was to get him off peo-' pie." Ribock was not available for comment. Rick Aydlett of South Carolina and Jay Flowers of Maryland first came to blows under the Gamecock basket. The officials broke that up, but the fighting erupted again near the Maryland bench among players from both teams.

"It was like a bomb explosion," said Frank McGuire, South Carolina coach. "Some spark set it off and then who really knows what happened after that." "I shook hands with Driesell," McGuire continued. "But he was very mad." "I would like for somebody to research how many times this South Carolina team has been involved in fights over the last two seasons," Driesell said. "There is no excuse for a team that has this much basketball talent fighting when they have a 30-point lead. I don't think it should be tolerated." av -tb 1 1 Fri.

(AP) Michigan State University, playing all of its 10-game football schedule on supposedly safer artificial turf this year, suffered more player injuries than ever before.

But while the team doctor believes a synthetic field allows players to run faster and hit harder, he doesn't blame that. Instead, says Dr. Lawrence Jarrett, the culprit is the modern equipment that's worn these days. Out of 26 injuries for the MSU Spartans this year, 13 sidelined their victims for the rest of the season, Jarrett said. Some 19 "important players" missed "considerable portions" of the Spartans' 4-6 season this fall, said Fred Stanley, sports information director.

Last year, when MSU first began playing and practicing on the tough, asphalt-based playing surface, season-long injuries sidelined about a dozen players more than twice the norm over all the years stretching back to 1896 when football started in East Lans- UN 1 3.00 6.20 3.80 1 1 iMwm. MSU had one installed during the summer of 1969 at a cost of $250,000.

Major manufacturers bought lavish advertisements in mass circulated sporting magazines and athletic trade publications to tout the contribution of their fields to avoiding injuries. Wearing short, molded-rub-ber cleats long used by European soccer teams, players supposedly would face less risk to knees and ankles than they had with longer, nylon and and metal cleats on grass and mud. But 10 knee injuries and four sprained ankles led the list of categories that cost the Spartans top players on football Saturdays this year, Jarrett said. There were three shoulder separations, two broken hands, two broken feet, one broken shoulder blade, two neck injuries and two concussions. Jarrett, white-haired and bluntly outspoken, won't knock the field, but says it does help speed up the collisions.

"I don't think turfs got anything to do with it," he said recently. "What's the difference if the block is behind the guy, beside him or in front of him? If he's hit, he's going down." But there's no question that the field adds a dimension to the game," says Jarrett "Linemen run faster. There's greater traction, they have better control, there's greater pursuit," he said. And the more sophisticated uniform equipment, Jarrett is convinced influences the injury rate. He says he'd like to see some body like the Big Ten Athletic Commission order a return to some of the old equipment 'especially leather helmets without face masks.
